Guests: TheseLongWars + Aditya

Recorded: June 19, 2020

First, we talk to RWN Pakistan bureau chief TheseLongWars about the history of China-Pakistan relations—a subject that has received very little attention in the Anglo-American world.

At 1:33:20 - we're joined again by our South Asia investigations chief Aditya to explain the recent bloodletting in the Galwan Valley on the disputed border between India and China...

Is the play button/download button that typically appears at the top of the post missing for others?

Ian B

it is for me. little lock is unlocked but can't find play "button". :[

Ian B

perhaps due to our patreon level?

AJ

Yeah same here I can’t seem to download because the normal button isn’t there anymore

Chas Padunski

I also can’t see any play button, though the mp3 file at the bottom of the page works! Just in case anyone needs their fix now.

Mark Ames

Calling the Space Force to fix the audio. Should be swooping in shortly. Please stand by...

Mark Ames

Fixed it. I blame Russian bots. Sorry everyone, but Vladimir Putin's evil knows no bounds.

Brian Williams

Progress! But the attached file is only 19:31. Maybe a preview file in disguise.

Brian Williams

Only an issue on the RSS. I'll give it the ol' Patreon wait.

Mark Ames

Not too late to blame illiberal China for sabotaging the RSS feed?

Philip Girvan

cheers! appreciate the prompt response! look forward to listening

Bit of a hassle accessing here in the Antipodes though my prob. was STB not a Patreon - demonstrably untrue - but it took a lot of buggerising around to re-up with a new password.

Scorched Earth

Those aren’t sticks with nails in them; those are re-bars.

Bit of a side note but I was very interested to hear this perspective on the role of anti-corruption initiatives and oligarchs in bringing Modi into power. It makes you wonder if there is something of a Car Wash Playbook, whereby anti-corruption initiatives are leveraged by up-and-comers in the global neoliberal oligarchy to dismantle the patronage networks and redistributive systems on which both healthy and unhealthy developmentalist parties and movements have always relied. Has someone done a Jakarta-Method style analysis of this phenomenon that I'm unaware of?

I was finally getting around to reading Pleasant Hell, but apparently it's only available as a used paperback for $118. Dafuq.

I went back and listened to #96 with Aditya, and he mentioned the warm-film Haqeeqat. I have downloaded the YouTube version and applied a found SRT file, but it sucks (goes out of sync). If anyone sees this and has a better option please do DM me.

I understand the anti-communism among guests & hosts. Who wouldn't hate Stalin. There should be equally anti-capitalism with all the disasters the US has had (Trump, Reagan, Clinton the biggest of late, and the others not much worst). But when the guest says thank god the Cold War is over, implying I would presume that the US "won" and the communists "lost". But we see clearly the disaster today with the capitalists via imperialism leading the way. The framework: US democracy would be good if only it practiced what it peaches. Democracy as a whole needs to be seen as a form of class dictatorship. The particular forms this takes in the US are one form of this dictatorship. "Competing ideas" means competing views within the ruling class. Even a lot of the institutions of "democracy" here developed out of the interests of the rising capitalist class in its long struggles with the feudal monarchies, even if those institutions now serve the capitalist rulers well. This perspective is certainly not part of the "great democratic debate" here!!

Yeah I’m Pakistani and the long war guy is an idiot and what we call the burger generation devoid of any common sense. He said he was happy when Hamid Gul died but it was Gul who made sure the Soviets were defeated in Afghanistan and Pakistan was safe. He also is very anti-Imran Khan and insinuates that the Army put him in power which is an outright lie. khan was elected by many Pakistanis who wanted to see fresh blood into politics. He hates on the army that defends Pakistan against her enemies. This tells me all I need to know about him and his views. F that guy (I hope he reads this comment).

And Aditiya, please don’t be a typical Indian who claims everything Islamic is Hindu in nature. Sufism doesn’t have Hindu influences. Sufism existed way before massive Muslim invasions took place and they ever stepped into India (modern Pakistan). I enjoyed your interview but like every other Indian y’all spread so much bullsh*t against Muslim unconsciously.
