HeyB00B00

There's a small lodge/bar called the Fairview Inn in a teeny town named Talkeetna, Alaska that proudly claims to have caused the death of President Warren G Harding.

On the America's Army thing: when I visited west point in high school and they had the group I was in all playing that game in one of their computer labs (and a cadet told us excitedly that they'd made levels of the campus itself to play on). I dunno how much recruiting mileage they got out of it, I remember thinking it was several steps down from COD

Yes! More Russia episodes pajalusta!

More poetry talk! I’m an editor and I’ve been parroting your arguments about poetry for months, I need to keep looking like I know what I’m talking about. Make whole poetry episodes, they’re brilliant.

We had a Marine recruiter come to my graphic design class and sell us 10th graders on the merit of joining. I went to the recruiting office where he kept me for 3 hours pressuring me to smoke like 4 camel crush cigarettes with him and i had to explain to my mom why i stunk when i got home.

Breakaway

Talkeetna is awesome.

Some insight into how military service was so embedded for working class poor culturally in Midwest. Or just a indicator of how dumb of a kid I was but I thought it was mandatory. It wasn’t to my relief later still pre teen that the realization hit me I didn’t have to go into the service. This was mid-late 80s. Graduated (surprisingly) mid 90s and can also remember always military recruiters presence in school. Also they do placement testing (can’t say if on campus) but remember really smart friend of mine testing high intelligence. Ended up going with the Navy and worked on a submarine.

THEKILLERWHALE

Looks like the Times just issued a massive and fairly damning retraction of the Caliphate podcast. Do you guys feel vindicated for giving it a fairly skeptical review or embarassed for even taking it halfway seriously?

Animals in Motion

I second the call for whole episodes on poetry. Mark and John's literature episodes are always great - more of those please!! You guys have such unpretentious love for a well told story, no bs.

Steve Jobs

Thank you for the great shows, John, Mark and Brendon. They have been such a comfort in a difficult year. Wishing you and yours a happy holidays. David

Matt Christman would be a great and I suspect eager guest for one of your Civil War episodes

I just got into RWN this year, and its been great catching up with all the old episodes from the beginning, mostly on bike rides/commutes. I always liked Brendon's ambient cutaways, but I was ecstatic to hear in the ep that he is THE Brendon Anderegg of the Mountains, whose album Centralia basically got me into ambient music...keep up the stellar work and thanks so much!

Craig McCallum

The only podcast I pay for. Been following since 2004. You guys give me a glimmer of hope and not least because you quote stevens and tell me about a DWJ book to read. Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!

I’ll second a suggestion for Matt Christman. He’s a fellow civil war nerd and has expressed admiration for the War Nerd. He mentioned recently on his solo stream that he was preparing for a possible writing project on an alternate history around Lincoln’s assignation. Plus he’s funny which helps when everything seems so grim.

What does the term “Okie” conjure up? I’ve heard this referenced several times but I don’t have a handle on what archetype or character this refers to and would be curious to know.

Henry Wallis

you should read the robert alter translation and notes on job book is nothing like what you describe lol

ilya y

"Okie" refers to the migrants from Oklahoma to California in the 30's who left when the Dust Bowl destroyed their farms. So as you can imagine it has a strong "hick" connotation.

David Andrews

Mark is right. Limited poetry is enough.
