In Part 1 of our series on Boris Yeltsin's 1993 coup (EP #260), we laid out the background of the conflict between Boris Yeltsin and his former allies in Russia's parliament: from 1990 up through the referendum in April 1993. In this episode, we talk about what Yeltsin did with the results of his Soros-bankrolled referendum: preparing the way for his autumn coup, in lockstep with the Clinton Administration and the IMF. We end this episode on the eve of the coup on October 3-4, 1993.

First, the War Nerd and Ames discuss Newtownards, coyotes of the northeast US, and the Belfast Telegraph...

At 20:01 — We look at the leadup to Yeltsin's coup from April 25, 1993 through October 2, 1993...

This is so depressing!

my feel with Soros is that the conspiracy theories are so batshit that anyone who brings him up is pre-discredited. there is no need to talk about soros on the 'liberal' side

Mark should write a book on 90s Russia/the Yeltsin coup

oh no

Seconded if he expanded the show notes into a book Id love to read it

Richard Wood

Stongly concur. Mark, write that book!

Richard Wood

Listening to the discussion about George Soros, one's mind naturally drifts to Bill Browder. Have you folks ever done a show on that obvious phony / crook? That would be a good one.

Jake Palmer

I'll relisten to these but I'm having a hard time getting when and to what extent during this the US government variously greenlit things, actively helped coordinate, and provided money (and maybe materials support?). Also, I'd like to see the evidence Mark has that Soros was coordinating with the US government (in)directly. I don't know the history but I have to imagine that other big business interests inside and outside Russia had a bigger influence than Soros at least collectively, but maybe not on specific initiatives I guess. I know business interests often act through the state (inc. individual politicians, and orgs like the IMF) so it can be harder to identify specific individuals and businesses sometimes but still. I agree with the sentiment that a book would be great! Or a reading list, I am trying to learn Russian at the moment.

Not as impressive as your wolf-coyotes, but in San Francisco the local coyotes have apparently started sending out their pups to lure dogs in the parks. The dog runs after the coyote pup (to play with it?), runs into the bushes, then SNAP! The coyotes eat them!

Loving the Northern Ireland chat! You really should never have gone to Newtownards 🤣 I'd love to hear your thoughts on this series BBC NI ran last year: https://m.imdb.com/title/tt10934254/ Fascinating series

Tim

Hmmmm not sure that link worked, anyway it's called Spotlight on the Troubles: A Secret History

Peter Queckenstedt

I'm thankful you are covering this subject. I was a kid in the Clinton years and ignorant of the details behind all of this.

Andy Cassidy

This series is great, and I agree with the comments saying you should turn this secret history into a book Mark. Cheers

Great series, I've been waiting for a long time for you guys to talk more in depth about your experience in russia. Just like john said i think your view of what is too obvious to talk about for your audience. Personally i would love to learn more about post soviet russia and how that system was finally controlled by Putin. Also if you have any book recommendations that would be really appreciated

The red mercury story now that rings a few bells! This made big noise in Arabic news in the 2000s. I can't remember much about what it was all about but Aljazeera made a 2 part investigative documentary involving hezbullah and the mossad in south africa.

Finally got around to listening to this 2nd episode. Really great series. Hearing the story still makes me viscerally furious, made worse by the fact most Americans still think we were doing them some kind of favor. Shock therapy in Russia was one of the great unpunished crimes of the 20th century and fills me with a kind of disguist for everyone involved I can barely put into words. I wasn't there until 2005, and even then I was only in Petersburg, but it really fucked me up. Bar none the most formative experience of my college years. I just knew I'd be lied too, just overwhelming contempt and revulsion for it. I've never really gotten over it either. Even most of the so called left is all in on Russophobia.

Given today's events maybe unlocking this series is in order?

It's disappointing to see John And Mark parroting the Liberal line on Brexit. Northern English Brexit voters aren't idiots who have been conned into voting for Brexit because they've been wooed by tin pot Trump imitators... Polls show that the issue that mattered most to Brexit voters was democracy and regaining national sovereignty from an unelected EU bureaucracy. Corbyn and the Labour left may have made the catastrophic mistake to abandon their Eurosceptic tradition in order to appease the Labour right-wing, but the Northern working class didn't... It's no coincidence that the former trade union strongholds in the north overwhelmingly voted for Brexit, these communities have been against EU integration since the 70s, because they understood what that meant, which was Thatcherite neoliberalism being enshrined into law by the anti-democratic EU overlords. It ironic that you go on to talk about how the left had a much more sensible skeptical and critical view of Soros before the neo-liberals began to rehabilitate his image, which the left then started to naively eat up... The exact same is true for how the Left has abandoned it's long and proud Euroskeptic tradition and has been conned into believing that the EU is actually a progressive institution, and not an anti democratic and imperialist neo-liberal bulwark.
