Am I crazy or does this sound so much like Maidan ? I know they keep repeating the same playbook but

Cory

Something I'm realizing is that the (for lack of better words) white Colonial zionist capitalist empire always uses the same tactics. Provoke or stage an atrocity and use their media power to create the official story. Assuming leftwing governments are trying to attain power in a more moral way.... (not necessarily true or even the best solution)... how does one do that ?

Benjamin Glover

Not gonna lie, that's a good impression. Also make the coup episodes open reposts already

Gotta send love to Mark after that episode. Some parts of that recollection were truly heartbreaking. Hope you're alright buddy.

!!!! MARK SO GOOD WITH THE DRUNK RUSSIAN VOICE LOOOL

Isac Petruzzi

"Mein Kampf is one giant Cure song" XD

Strangely, this has been one of the more difficult RNW series to listen to, even though you've covered bloodier, more difficult topics. For all its flaws, the USSR represented a self-conscious attempt to build a better society; for it to have ended so ignominiously at the end of US capitalism is a pretty brutal end to the story.

I feel bad for John being in Dublin City Centre at the moment. I was in there myself a few days ago and it's a horror show. The ratio of people in need of spare change, and those who may have spare change is completely out of whack and leads to a lot of desperation. Most everywhere else is normal and quiet as ever, just the city centre that's gone so downhill.

I think the famous BLM "capitol" photo is the Lincoln Memorial (but the point still stands)

onononononono, the BMP is an IFV, the BTR is an APC. I was in the middle of painting the stairs and i had to stop to come post this Edit: Extremely depressing episode. Great work, guys!

Chris Warren

Excellent (if depressing) episode. Always fun to hear Mark speak Russian.

AOC showed her true colors when she threatened to deplatform Jimmy Dore. Accusing him of "violence" for roasting her on Twitter for not fighting for her own campaign promises. I've lost all respect for her.

Scorched Earth

Sounds like a description of downtown Toronto these days.

Scorched Earth

I’m not even sure I want to listen to this. The first two were so depressing. The Russians (except Yeltsin and company) were genuinely trying to create a better civilization for themselves, only to have it upended by American capitalist / ideological interests

Structure-wise I feel like these three episodes could have been better, Marc almost knows and wants to tell a little TOO much and loses the big picture some times, but goddamn these three episodes are nonetheless great. Classics of rwn, worthy of a book!

i can't believe that after years of reporting on wars and coups and all the rest that you would, for even one second, consider a hapless group of retards in viking helmets and skechers a militant fascist threat attempting a coup. im still going to remain a listener, and i can't deny your expertise, but it seems that although you position yourselves to the left of liberals, you're content holding the deluded liberal line. just my opinion

Peter

This was a great episode. I appreciate how personal Marc’s accounts were. I view this podcast as an educational way to pass time in my shop, but it is obvious how much you both have gone through in your lives seeking these truths. I wish you both great health and comfort.

Mark and Gary: Thank you so much for this series. One one level, it's a brilliant combination of thorough research and analysis combined with eyewitness testimony, delivered with raw, emotional ethos. Worth the price of admission right there. But on top of this (or lurking below it), is a compelling Bildungsroman on Mark's part. Whether this was consciously intended or not, the narrative subtext is one describing Mark's radicalization (or, more politely, politicization) by these events, if I'm reading the clues correctly. This feature of the story helps ground all the other things Mark, Gary, Matt, and the others did at the eXile in what must have been the mind-bending tumult of those years (including all the writing that scolds have found unpalatable). And there is a straight line connecting all your disgust with the local satraps and oligarchs (plus their western political clients and media enablers) and all your work since returning stateside. Bravo.

Sorry to divert from the current topic: When is the War Nerd Iliad Audio book as read by the War Nerd himself, to be released? Eagerly awaiting it & would buy it immediately if published as an audiobook!

Your quip about Russians needing to be "guided" to democracy due to genetic flaws reminds me of how Jakarta Method described American foreign policy after world war II: basically "these brown people are too childish to do democracy themselves so we need to do it for them via military dictatorship"

Dan Muck

Good stuff, guys. I think Mark should turn this into a book.

Andy Cassidy

These are turning into a really impressive series, cheers.

Jon

Longtime lurking fan here. Breaking my silence to thank you for all the detailed descriptions of people and streets. I lived on Ул. Краснопресненская 2012-2015 so it was easy to visualize all the places mentioned. Mark, can you give a list of the main books you used as references for these episodes, including the Russian ones? On a weird side note, I first encountered The Exile unknowingly circa 2000: I remember my high school English teacher crying in class one day when she found out her son who was interning in Moscow had been beaten up. It would take me another 10 years before I found out he was working for you guys, but I'm glad I did.

Christopher Nelms

This is an incredible, indelible, and valuable series

Gengeros

Hello Mark and John. Any chance you can do episodes on the battles of Leningrad and Berlin? I know what you are thinking “world war ii shit”. But it’s eastern front and this English speakers don’t really have detailed history of these events.

xnfec

Great newsletter BTW.

Interesting where Mark was located during this. I was at the White House as a reporter. My colleague Lee called me that Sunday morning which Mark described perfectly as a clear, bright blue, refreshingly cool and unusually warm day in October, 'a good day for a protest.' I remember the bus ride to the metro like it was yesterday. When we got to the cordoned off White House surrounded by the OMON, who looked every bit what Mark described, stone cold & fearsome. We couldnt' get any of them to speak. And suddenly we turn around to see thousands of marchers chanting, screaming, throwing rocks, angry as hell. And a quick look back and those fearsome OMON soldiers had disappeared. I whipped out my notebook and interviewed women with their children who spoke passionately about how hard life was, how much they hated Yeltsin. Rubber bullets were whizzing overhead, and it was like you were in the middle of a Hollywood film set. Lee and I wanted to get the hell out of there as we saw fighting and soldiers wrapped up in barbed wire, trucks on fire, hostages being taken, etc. but we were cut off and soon in the middle of the marchers, moving steadily on the ring road in protest, chanting and raising our fists. We kept a low profile as we passed the American Embassy and the protesters denounced the Americans. Eventually we were able to dove tail it into the metro and headed to our newspaper headquarters on Leninsky Prospekt. We thought we had the big story, and spent the night in the offices, writing and reading wire reporters about Yeltsin government's pleas to send in the military. In the middle of the night we then heard and saw the tanks zooming down Leninsky Prospekt. We saw the beginning of a people's rebellion, and the tanks were racing to end it.

Joshua Garcia

Which are books recommend about this?

mark

Ames should aim to write a book on this subject. Or of his experiences in Russia.

Paul Vd

Yep. The world should always have 2 economic blocs. Instead we have this hyper globalist hellscape called the end of history. This is mostly the Anglo wannabe Chinese Communist parties fault. They chose this. They could have headed a new Eastern bloc. But they chose to extend US empires life by 30 years instead

James

I would note: (i) it's not so much when the proposition is disproven as when it fails to be proven true (the difference has important psychological ramifications) (ii) it's more about managing cognitive dissonance than vanity, although vanity is a factor (iii) because of the Duhem-Quine problem - no proposition can be 100% falsified. Call me paranoid but I think that western intelligence agencies are making extensive and productive use of this pyschological phenomenon in the psychological operations they are conducting against their own populations these days.
