In part two of our series on the National Endowment for Democracy, we look at how the Reagan's subversion weapon created havoc in Haiti and Venezuela to undermine rulers deemed unfriendly to US interests & business. We also recover the famous quote by NED co-founder Allen Weinstein — "A lot of what we do today was done covertly 25 years ago by the CIA" — told to the Washington Post in 1991, and trace how an NED investment in subverting trust in Russia's 2011 elections led to blowback in America's 2016 elections and beyond.

In Romania, There is the Rise Project which is what I call the The Romanian Bellingcat, is partnered with OCCRP Which is literally funded by The NED, USAID, The Danish Foreign Ministry, The State Department and the British Foreign Ministry. So much for " Unbiased Independence".

Ellen Harold

Should have been “international” Endowment for Democracy.

RWN is my morning coffee.

This is happening for me too, it’s not showing up in the Castro app or the Apple Podcast app. Really don’t want to have to listen on the Patreon app, ugh.

Chris H

Very informative episode. I knew the NED was rotten, but didn't realise how much.

Does the podcast have any recommendations of good books/reading on the nature of US gov/IRI/NED/USAID involvement preceding the 2002 coup in Venezuela?

Man I saw that logo with the crimethink style graphic and fucking cringed internally, wondering precisely how responsible the NED as an organization is for the El Mozote massacre. "The el Mozote massacre was preceded by La Matanza or the massacre of Pipil people in 1932, the Student massacre of 1975, and the Óscar Romero funeral and Sumpul River massacres of 1980. It was followed by the El Calabozo massacre and El Paraíso massacre in 1982, the Tenango-Guadalupe and Tenancingo-Copapayo massacres in 1983, and the Guaslinga-Los Llanitos massacre in 1984."

Matthew McCracken

El Mozote precedes the NED. Even if the NED existed in 1980 they would not be involved with training death squads. That is kind of stuff is still under the control of the CIA.

There's a good bit in Whit Stillman's 1994 comedy 'Barcelona', based on Stillman's experiences as an American ex-pat living in Catalonia near the end of the Cold War, where the antagonist, because of reasons mentioned in this episode, confuses the AFL-CIO as the AFL-CIA. https://youtu.be/w9naLNBqblY

Since Patreon's site is incredibly slow and unwieldy, does anyone know if there's a centralized spreadsheet or something with all the RWN episodes as mp3 links? I'm trying to browse through all of the older episodes but the site is incredibly slow. Click month and year, wait 5 seconds. Click another month/year, wait another 5 seconds.

Fantastic work here gentlemen!

As mentioned in the reply above, download the XML .rss file from somewhere like Podcast Addict; open it in a text editor. All the links are there, plus commentary when available. You can copy the links and download at will it seems.
