Seems like every few weeks on this show, something nefarious in the world traces its funding back to the bland-sounding "National Endowment for Democracy" — the notorious regime-change "NGO" that happens to be fully funded by the GO part of NGO, i.e., the US government. So what exactly is the National Endowment for Democracy? We trace the NED's sordid origins in Reagan's CIA-led dirty wars and global war on leftists under the guise of "democracy promotion."

*NED Scrapbook

Stick-figure puppet doodle above by Walter Raymond, Jr., the CIA disinformation specialist who brought the National Endowment for Democracy to life. Doodle discovered by the late great Robert Parry, who we interviewed in RWN EP #76.

HeyB00B00

Bill Casey was Reagan's campaign manager SMH The deep state really was running everything by then. Imagine Steve Bannon being appointed to CIA Chief

I am still waiting/looking for more information on the NED's domestic operations and propaganda side as well, of which I think Allen Weinstein of the Hiss-Chambers case is the spookiest and most prominent face. But now i'm rambling, great episode!

Bart Peeters

Does anybody know what those google locators on the flag of East Turkestan in the NED tweet above stand for? Could they be locations where the ETIM has perpetrated suicide attacks?

Dorst Savijeski

Boy boy i figured out why i am under attack, had to go Afghanistan to see perpetual war. Why cant the derka derka's find something else to be good at. Srry fam bezo, it was a joke i didnt send it there

Bummed I can’t see the stick-figure org chart doodle referred to in the show notes, but great stuff. When you mention the weird millionaire cranks they brought on to fund crazy shit, I think of the likes of Floyd Greg Paxton, inventor of the Kwik Lok bread clip, head of the Washington State JBS, and Publisher of the short-lived Yakima Eagle. A lot of these types figure in Segraves’ Gold Warriors trying to dig up Yamashita’s gold in the Philippines.

Oh never mind, the pic is tiny in the Patreon app.

An excellent listen as usual, really looking forward to the next episode

Many, many thanks. I cut my journalism teeth on the trials of Poindexter and Clair George, and wrote in detail about the flow of intelligence into the aptly named congressional oversight committees during the contra wars. The 1984 vote on the third version of the Boland Amendment is probably the high point of congressional opposition to US warmaking since 1945, certainly a bookend with the Case-Church amendment in 1973, which, although it took place after the Paris Accords, put an exclamation point on what had been growing opposition to the war.

JCC

Worth noting that by the time the hyphen in "Iran-contra" became public, the congressional battle was over. The 1985 versions of Boland, which opened the "humanitarian" exception and other reasons for funding demonstrated that the votes were not there to stop the war. Which is why O'Neill and Wright declared impeachment off the table prior to the hearings, and why the hearings focused so much of their attention on the money flow from Iran. The diversion, as we used to say, was the diversion. Also worth commenting on the role that the NED has played not just in influencing other countries, but in training the foreign policy elites. Each party has a breeding ground for future "experts" and government officials. NDI is particularly important for squeezing the last vestiges of squeamishness about corporate power out of young liberals. Also, thanks so much for your constant shout-outs to Bob Parry, who was a neighbor and generous mentor when I was trying to distinguish my ass from a hole in the ground in another lifetime.

What would be your advice for evaluating journalism on a subject where you know the NED has an agenda? If they're known to fund a given outlet, that would at least inform how you'd interpret their editorial position, but how do you keep from being preemptively dismissive if coverage aligns with what would be convenient for the NED to have a reader believe?

Dorst Savijeski

If you wanna know the breaking neck story (got a painging from the broken neck and a boe), we were depressed about Kharthoum. Watch your mates after the pressure is gone that kept the group together<3

radiowarnerd

We need to do Iran-Contra, perhaps you'd be interested?

Dan Kolbert

We used to call AIFLD the AFL-CIA.

Dan Kolbert

I was in Nicaragua in this era. Of course in typical small country fashion, the editor of the leading pro-FSLN paper was also a Chamorro. And anyone paying attention to Central America knew the NED was funding La Prensa. What a miserable era.

Anthony Schiappa

Ames, the reference to Phil Hartman's "Caveman Lawyer" was friggin great....

Loved the first episode and really looking forward to the second. Thanks guys!
