Regarding the Kirby headline - I think John Kirby should be thrown around recklessly, perhaps into a wall

CR

Joe Biden was a stupid, corrupt, sleazy, lying, warmongering, evil piece of fuck for fifty years before he became president. What the fuck did you expect? We knew he was a snake. I hope Trump kicks his ass because he deserves it and the U.S. deserves it.

Trump probably won't be allowed to run against him. If that happens, American democracy is dead.

Jacob Bucci

If preserving democracy requires lawfare then sorry that ship has sailed

MoldyTolge

So far this year is making me feel like Biden looks, great episode art selection. It seems like we are fated to live in “interesting times”

I don't think Biden wants a regional war. Iran clearly does not want a regional war either. However, there has been this obvious disconnect from the beginning where the Biden administration apparently thought a show of force alone would be sufficient to act as a deterrent against an intervention by Hezbollah or Iran. I don't know if its racism, prejudice or just pure stupidity, but there has been a grossly insufficient weight placed on the destabilizing effects of a 90+ day mass murder campaign by Israel and the forcible displacement of nearly 2 million people. I go back too to the utter stupidity of the Iraq War in 2003, where we had these absolutely moronic claims and assessments of risk by people in positions of power (including Biden). I think many of these people probably believed these things too, but in 2003-2008, the power asymmetry was so great for the U.S. that we had a reserve to spend down. Our political leadership had the luxury of being reckless and stupid. I don't think this will be the case this time around. At the absolute minimum, an expansion of the war will likely make it too costly for the U.S. to maintain a military presence in the region.

I think this is the first time I've heard "collaborators" used to mean "informants for the speaker's *own* country." Usually that word has, uh, something of a pejorative bent

Brianna Wu is a legend for the tweet in which she said that moon colonization was our most pressing national security issue, because, and I quote, "Rocks thrown from the moon would hit Earth with the force of thousands of nuclear bombs"

That Gerald Ford Indonesia bit is harrowing. That language has to be interpreted as code.

Faisal Sultan

The “Biden protecting the country they have a fist fight with” comment. Imagine if Trump had said that. Everyone would be up in arms and calling him a traitor.

An appeal to Americas better nature by bringing up the suffering of children will fail. I’m a parent of young kids in the US, this country HATES children. Look no further than how pathetic and necrotic the public schools are, and just watch how any american over the age of 60 reacts to the presence of children.

j

Dancing Palestinians after 9-11..? Was that an honest mistake or placed disinformation?🤔

Hans Anders

About the fact that Washington pledged to invade The Hague if an American would be tried at the ICC: People in the Netherlands view it at most as rude. But most view it as just an odd relic of that whacky George Bush. It’s taken for granted that the US stands outside of such things as international law Also, the line from Israel is the same as the line on Yemen. “There’s actually enough food in Gaza, but Hamas is taking it all. 30.000 Hamas fighters are eating all the food for the other two million people”

Just Say No To Genocide Joe.

Ander Pierce

I'm absurdly ignorant and naive, but if I was Xi or Putin I would be sending air defense systems to the Houthis with little bows and fruit baskets, so that if/when US makes good on its promise to retaliate against mainland Yemen for Houthi attacks the incoming planes would have a more challenging time than expected.

Ander Pierce

Preserving democracy always requires lawfare, there's always gonna be someone who wants more power and if they're not going for it politically or militarily they're pursuing it legally.

Kissinger said something similar to the South American generals before the murders there. He sounds like Macbeth - if t'were done then t'were well if t'were done quickly. Maybe without the murderous charm.

We urgently need Amal Saad on War Nerd for Hezbollah update

George P

also a legend for carpet-bagging into a district that included South Boston to run for Congress in 2018. her getting off the Red Line in Andrew Square and walking around Southie would be a culture clash on par with Columbus and the Caribs, I'd have paid so much to see it happen

Maybe John could do a board-game based on his travel experiences.

Beatz

Blinken also produced an Abel Ferrara movie. No idea what that guy’s deal is!

Jason Thompson

I heard that one literally days after 9-11. Who knows, there’s probably some video somewhere of some random Palestinian guy saying “Good riddance. Fuck the USA”, which a pro-Israel group ensured was played all over US news.

j

My understanding is that the celebrating Palestinians were Isrealy „art students „. Working for a moving company who all had plans to leave the next day back to Israel but with different routes. Some were arrested and detained… this is a huge rabbit hole.. this my comment.

Demented Avenger

As a Minnesotan, let me note that Hüsker Dü always sucked; it's a dirty little secret of ours. Now, the band that Bimbo O'Dork also had Cedric Bixler-Zavala, who founded The Mars Volta, probably the best rock band of the 21st century, and O'Dork was also a fan of Hawkwind, meaning he had some taste.

Mark Ames

I only keep seeing her tweets because so many accounts I know keep acting like they're shocked by her "turn" from whatever she apparently used to be. From what I've seen with people like her in that same space doing that same sort of brash online progressive advocacy that makes this surprising turn, either a) they're canny-sleazy & covertly monetizing their social capital with whatever DC PR agency needs to insert their messages for hire; or b) there's nothing there at all, but people like to gawk at car wrecks.

Mark Ames

Or look at how this culture treats teachers. Or something as basic as feeding kids school lunches.

Ellen Harold

I think the daring “Raid on Entebbe” Airport by Israeli commandos to rescue hostages from Palestinian hijackers in 1976, if anyone remembers that, gave the Israeli military a lot of PR mileage, in part because it was so surprising.

j

I bring rumors and you bring evidence! Well done!

Kevin Hickey

It’s a verrrry murky story, like so many things on 9/11. RWN should do an episode on US War Games in general and the several war games scheduled for 9/11 in particular.

xnfec

Robert Heinlein again!

Angry Dad

Just curious, Mark’s comment that Antony Blinken isn’t even well-regarded in American foreign policy circles jumped out. Has anyone leaked/written about this?

j

I think they all know 9/11 is the third rail you just don’t touch sadly….

Tvvvv

Could we get a civil war episode on technological innovations during the war and spies?

PublicMarkets

Serious question, Is mark saying “hate hate hate” and is that a reference to the Hater’s Ball sketch from Chappelle show?

SB

The most depressing question to me is how do you shape a society into a state when less than 2% of it believes their military uses too much force in such an obvious situation. 20-30 years ago they would have major demonstrations for Palestinian rights with hundreds of thousands of people participating. Anthropologist should study what leads to such a blood thirst. I imagine there were no such polls in 1930s Germany. But I would guess they had a higher percentage of population disagreeing with the state policies. U.S. after 9/11 wasn't this vicious against Arabs/Iraqis. How do you turn 'modern' humans back into the ancient mentality?

jkjkjkj

To answer John around 1:26 as to how they could claim most lives were lost pre invasion: as the Portuguese began to pull out a civil society developed in East Timor that was founded roughly along three party lines with varying views on whether or not Timor should be independent. Freitilin was left wing pro independence (and most popular), UDT center right and ideologically split on independence and APODETI (an indonesian proxy/puppet). As the portuguese pulled out Freitilin declared independence and fighting erupted between the three factions with apodeti acting in conjunction with indonesian agents. indonesia claimed it had to intervene to restore order. After taking over the Indonesians forced a hastily formed timorese parliament to ratify annexation. So the claim that most died pre invasion (a totally false claim) probably refers ti the political violence that indonesia essentially created to justify intervention

Matelda

When he says "children of Gaza" i think he's just trying to sound biblical. Obviously to fascists people don't have agency, peoples have agency.
