Jamie did escape. Someone said "They caught the Kingslayer" when they brought him back. You guys just didn't hear it because of talking. In fact he was gone multiple days. The conversation about some people not being able to handle imprisonment was Jamie's way of explaining to his cousin the reason why he was going to kill him (the cousin). Jamie doesn't want to die, he wants to get back to Cersei.
