My take on the whole intro to the variant walkers is you keep the whisperer arc exactly the same and you just make a season 12. Make that the last season and it only feels right to have the villain in the final season be good ole walkers again. Also they could use the whisperer strategy(ies) to combat the variant walkers.

They explore more about the variants in the spinoffs, particularly in The Walking Dead: World Beyond. I also think in the later seasons of Fear The Walking Dead they explore it a bit as well. There are also walking dead webisodes, and bonus episodes that have some special side plot characters and stories and one of them is about a scientist that is studying the variants I think

These “variants” have been around season 1 but the producers decided to go in a different directions in the seasons that followed so that’s the zombies never displayed these skills in other seasons until now. Producers of the show are bringing the variants back. They’ve yet to provide an explanation of this as of this moment

The S1 zombies were faster and smarter because of the different show runner, after that they changed and TWD creator nerfed their speed and intelligence to suit his original idea which was displayed wholly in his comics

Man I accidently skipped this episode went to E20 and thought hole up now I'm missing a whole chapter lol. Pamela is using Eugene as a scapegoat. She knew her son was trash but still wanted some to pay for his death. We saw walkers picking up rocks and turning door knobs in S1.
