Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Thank you to those who were able to join our conversation about telling the human stories of war with our deputy chief editor Toma Istomina and Tim Mak of The Counteroffensive.

Toma and Tim discussed topics like Ukraine’s retreat from Avdivvka, and how both the Kyiv Independent and The Counteroffensive covered the story. They also discussed what goes into interviewing someone who has experienced trauma, the importance of informed consent, and reporting on Ukraine beyond just being a place of war.

Tim Mak is the founder of The Counteroffensive, a newsletter that aims to provide more holistic war coverage, putting human stories front and center. Read their work here.

If you have any ideas for topics you’d like to see in our next community events, you can reach out to us at community@kyivindependent.com.

Thank you for this excellent and poignant conversation. Thank you also for recording all these conversations and reposting them for folks like me who can never see them when they are actually happening. Slava Ukraini.

Also, cream cheese is NOT an acceptable condiment for sushi, in my mind. But, dear Ukrainians, please eat however much cream cheese you need and want on your sushi in order to be victorious (and happy)!
