Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Thank you for your continued support.

We’ve heard from you that there’s demand for merch with Ukraine's trident symbol, or tryzub in Ukrainian — and we have great news for you. The Kyiv Independent’s new collection, "Ukrainian Trident: Through History and Modernity,” is here.

We wanted to highlight the tryzub — one of Ukraine’s ancient national symbols and the central design on its modern coat of arms — and the long history of Ukrainian sovereignty.

You can read all about the origins and the meaning of the tryzub in our “Explaining Ukraine” article here.

The four designs in the collection focus on four eras of the tryzub’s design (from left to right):

The Origins: This design features minimalist lines found on ancient coins from the era of Volodymyr the Great, one of the most famous rulers of the Kyivan Rus empire that existed from between the 9th and 13th centuries.

The Revival: Kyiv-based designer Nayle Suleimanova reimagined on Ukraine’s coat of arms — adding Kyiv's iconic chestnut leaves.

Modern reflections: Ukrainian artist Katya Akvarelna’s modern interpretation of the country’s Great Coat of Arms, which unites the “Lion of the West” and the “Cossack of the East.”

The Future: This design features a fierce shrike defending its young — paying homage to the popular culture theory that links the design of the tryzub to a falcon diving downwards.

You can explore the Ukrainian Trident collection here. Don’t forget that as a member of the Kyiv Independent, you always have a 15% discount on everything in the store with the code WELOVEYOU at checkout.

If you do purchase anything, we’d love to see photos of you in the tryzub merch! You can email them to us at community@kyivindependent.com and let us know if you’re okay for us to feature them on social media.
