Why is the little city of Nikopol such a frequent target of shelling and rockets?

What volunteer / humanitarian relief efforts on the ground do you see having the most impact and the highest integrity (aka who is doing the most good on the support lines) and what kind of opportunities do you see that folks can take advantage of to help with the relief and humanitarian efforts if they don't have the financial liquidity to donate a ton of money? What kind of skills are needed in places where people have sought temporary living / refugee centers? I want to come volunteer so I'm curious where someone like myself and many others could be helpful, if we don't have combat or medical training/experience. Does the Independent accept volunteer journalists? I do photography and was curious if, when I arrive in Ukraine (likely early autumn), if I might be able to chip in and provide photos. My plan is to document my time there so I can bring home a first hand account if what is happening to continue to encourage the people in my community to support the efforts and demand our government do everything it can to ensure Ukraine emerges victorious. But I could kill two invaders with one stone if I can team up with local news outlets to provide coverage and stories from the streets. I love the work you guys are doing. My country lacks a lot of integrity when it comes to our news coverage, so the Independent has been a breath of fresh air and the kind of journalism the world needs. Дякую. Слава Україні!

I would love to hear more about how the recent corruption-related firings are perceived in Ukraine, especially the regional administrators. Do Ukrainians feel this is positive for the war, bad for the war? Is there a difference of opinion in Kyiv versus the rural areas? Sorry if this was already published and I missed it.

What is the military, if not symbolic significance of Bakhmut in the current environment? What effect would a potential fall of Bakhmut have to Ukrainian morale, both in the military and in society? Obviously, I do hope it will remain under Ukrainian control.

Dan Cook

I haven't heard very much about what Ukraine is doing (alone and with partners) to promote its influence and counter Russian narratives in the 'global south'? Information about diplomatic and cultural efforts abroad would be interesting to hear more on, as well as links with liberation movements in other post-soviet states. Thank you!

Please recommend a good book about the history and making of Ukraine. Here in Germany historical literature on Eastern Europe is often Russia biased. Thanks!

How much of the donated heavy weaponry (tanks, fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, artillery, HIMARS etc) has been lost? How many ex-Soviet heavy weapons does Ukraine have left? What proportion of the Ukraine Army is currently involved in fighting on the Donbas front in places like Bakhmut and Soledar and what proportion isn't?

Jean Henri Weisen

It is sometimes claimed that due to corruption, part of the weapons deliveries end up on the international illegal weapons market. Have you already investigated this?

Blue Cardinal

How worried are Ukrainians that Russia may use nuclear weapons?

I am very keen to understand how Ukrainians feel about Navalny. When I ask the Fre Navalny team about his nationalistic comments of the past, they just get angry and deny. There is no sense of accountability. They seem to lack compassion/understanding about why it would be important from a Ukrainian perspective to hear Navalny take responsibility for his past statements. It just seems like a complete block in their psychology. Like if they said "Yes he said those things, and he now feels very differently. He was wrong. He sees how those sentiments can lead to genocide..." or something like that, I would feel so much more comfortable. I know I am expressing a personal response but I am sure many others feel the same way. Can you host a discussion the Kyiv Independent or on Power Lines about this? I am keen to hear a discussion between a "Russian liberal" (if you can find one) and a Ukrainian about this.

Peter Zuckerman

If I have five or 10 minutes on most days to do something to help Ukraine, what can I do? Write a letter? Make a phone call? Complain to a biz that does biz in Russia? Etc.

Prior to the war, there was considerable contention and fighting in the east of the country. Has the government laid out a long-term vision for what they expect the end state to be? Would separatists be driven out, accommodated, or something else? How would the country be unified in a post-war situation?

Elizabeth VN

How are Ukrainian businesses and private sector employers coping? What does the job market look like now and how do Ukrainians manage to either find/keep employment or continue without?

Mario Wolczko

The International Red Cross appears discredited as a source of support within Ukraine. But what is the relationship between the ICRC and the Ukrainian Red Cross? Is the latter a good place to donate?

Johnny Roland

I would like to learn more about the children of Ukraine. This war has devastated their lives and divided their families. Many of them left Ukraine and are going to school and forming lives in other countries in Europe. Do they want to return? How do they see the war? This is the next generation that will build and determine Ukraine's future.

Allen Graves

I noticed that Ukrainian officials are starting to meet with personnel from America’s Department of Veterans Affairs is the government looking at revamping the Veteran health care system to something similar as other western nations. What programs are being rolled out? Also what is being done concerning mental health treatment for PTSD within the general population?

I am pleased President Zelenskyy is removing allegedly corrupt officials within the government. What action has been taken to remove the corruption in the International Legion as reported by the KI? As a side note: the Wagner Group is run by greed and self interest -- Bakhmut does not have much military value; however, it has economic value which WG wants to exploit. слава україні справедливість для україни

Hello, I recently saw a report on demining in Ukraine, with Ukrainian women bieng trained in Kosovo. What is the current situation in this respect : are there enough Ukrainian volunteers ? All my encouragement for your work.

Samuel Hélie

How is the mobilization of Ukrainian soldiers organized ? In addition to volunteers, are enrollments done by age group? Or by job? How is the departure to the army apprehended by the people concerned? (this question follows images that may be defamatory on violent requisitions in Ukraine, I'm counting on you to tell us what's going on)

David Bicchetti

I would like to have an update about Ukrainian efforts about Russian dead soldiers, I remember there is a dedicated website and the army was trying to reach to russian family members. Where do we stand on that? Also information about the telephone line available to Russian to surrender? What has happened to those who surrendered with this method? many thanks

Alan Bellomo

What organizations can I send money to help children that have lost their parents? Also, what about organizations for animals that are now homeless? Thank you!

Claudia Hall Christian

When you look out at the world from Ukraine, what are things that you see that the world doesn't understand -- about the war, about Ukraine? What is the world missing? Also, I learned that Ukraine found natural gas in 2018. Is someone (from Ukraine) exploring/mining this field?

Higgybaby

Do you feel like the anti-corruption efforts recently in the news will continue beyond the end of the hostilities and, if so, how will that affect the Ukraine and it's future.

David Smith

It would be very interesting to see an article about Ukrainian naming conventions. In America, we primarily have a given (first) name, an arbitrarily middle name, and a family (last) name. We aren’t really familiar with the concept of patronymics and when it is used versus when the family name is used. Also, it would likewise be interesting to learn about the diminutive names (nicknames as we call them here). For instance, I’ve read a girl named Daryna being called Darinka by her parents. I’ve seen other instances of similar changes made to the formal name by a friend or family member. For example, are there specific rules that are followed, is is it just the choice of similar sounding words to the formal name. While this is more of a cultural interest question and isn’t as important as many of the questions about the war, it would still be a very interesting read. Thank you.

With Russia historically wishing for a 'buffer' in Eastern Europe to give it strategic depth against threats from the West, what is the Ukrainian strategy for remaining independent and, ideally, safe once the war is won? Finland is entering NATO, the Baltics are already members, and Belarus is a client state of Russia with no de facto independence, so the old Russian Pale has already been mostly lost to them. Due to how far east Ukrainian territory projects it will be incredibly difficult to physically secure, and membership of NATO (and the EU) are both likely many years away, so some kind of comprehensive and convincing defensive strategy will be required to keep Russia at bay once their forces are ejected from Ukrainian territory. Of course this ignores the complex issues around Russian settlers in Ukraine already, especially Crimea, and separatists in the eastern provinces, but I'd be interested to learn about what the political and military plans are for securing Ukrainian territory once it is reclaimed (including Crimea and the Azov Sea), assuming no massive change of character from the Kremlin regardless of the war's outcome.

Can someone at the Kyiv Independent give us an understanding of Budanov? Who is he? Is his appointment controversial? If so, why? Are people suspecting he is not loyal? What are people thinking about Reznikov being demoted. Should he have resigned. Any insights you can provide on this would be enlightening. Thank you for your work. Linda

Could there be presented a KI-approved list of charities, so that we know these organisations are legitimate? It can be a concern when you don’t know anything about where you are sending money but want to help somehow.

Bob Radus

Can you discuss the battlefield deployment and effectiveness T-84M Oplot Main Battle Tank against Russian tanks and armor? My research shows this home-produced variant to be superior to any Russian tank in service. How does Ukraine plan to use them in conjunction with the British Centurions and Leopard 1 and 2?
