Dear Kyiv Independent community members,
We hope your week has been going well! Thank you for your continued support and for keeping your attention on Ukraine.
We'd also like to give a warm welcome to our 41 new members this week! We're proud to be reader-funded, and we wouldn't be here without you.
Here are some highlights from the Kyiv Independent over the last week:
We have moved into our new office! Pictured above is chief development officer Zakhar Protsiuk (L), senior editor Oleksiy Sorokin, and editor-in-chief Olga Rudenko working in the new office this week.
One of our most popular stories this week was Igor Kossov's "Piecemeal tank delivery schedule can limit their effectiveness in Ukraine," which explains why Ukraine needs tanks and why it's important to supply them soon, after Russia's tactical and strategic mistakes of 2022.
We reported on Ukraine's new controversial media law, which gives the government authority to block some media outlets without a court ruling. Oleg Sukhov's article analyzes the controversy and if the law is a tool to fight Russian propaganda or a censorship attempt.
We also wrote about the civilian investigators collecting evidence of Russian war crimes in Ukraine. Alexander Khrebet's story from Snihurivka – a town in southern Mykolaiv Oblast, formerly on the front line before Ukraine's counteroffensive – looks at how the Ukraine 5 AM Coalition is working to document war crimes in the liberated town.
Mykolaiv also lacks potable water after Russian forces attacked the city's water supply in April. We published a video explaining how Mykolaiv residents survive without a supply of drinking water.
This week, Belarus Weekly looks at the Hungarian foreign minister's visit to Minsk, making him the first EU member senior official to visit Belarus since the brutal crackdown against Belarusian civil society in 2020.
Thank you for standing by our side as we bring independent, locally-sourced news about Ukraine to the world.
