Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Today marks the one year anniversary of Russia’s all-out war against Ukraine. When it started, the Kyiv Independent was just a three-month-old startup.

We wanted to share with you this video, since there have been requests for more long-form and multimedia reporting, as well as more stories about how the war has impacted people on the individual level and changed their day-to-day life.

In this candid video, our team members look back at the first days of the war, making the choice whether to stay or flee, rescuing their family members from occupied territories, and reporting from the front line.

Thank you for your support and for standing with us.

One year of Russia’s all-out war through the eyes of one Ukrainian newsroom

The Kyiv Independent was just a three-month-old startup when Russia launched an all-out war against Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022. A year later, its team members look back at making the choice on whether to stay or flee, rescuing their family members from occupied territories, reporting from the front line, and growing into an internationally recognized media outlet. Congratulations for going through this incredibly difficult period — while maintaining such a high level / high quality coverage of the excruciating war the people of Ukraine is facing. Truly a source of inspiration in the face of adversity. Bruno Roche (father of Joseph and friend of Iryna)

Your staying, your relentless staying and working to keep the world informed, is inspiring. I look at you all, and wish only for the time it will end, and you can be given the time to recover, to mourn and live normally. Thank you for all you are doing. With deepest respect. Suzanne

We all can remember those horrendous first feelings from a year ago. Feelings that never will be forgotten or fade away. Thank you for helping us in the rest of the world to see, understand and react to what is happening in your beautiful country. With love and respect /Kristian

thank you for your endurance during all of this, and sharing the personal stories. The reporting you did, and keep doing seems to be one of the most objective out there, and way more connected to actual events then any domestic news here in the Netherlands. I know it might seem trivial, but the war triggered mayor anxiety for me, and your reporting helped keep me informed to a level that I could keep calm enough to keep functioning on a daily basis and support some local charities helping Ukrainians, both in Ukraine and abroad. from the bottom of my heart I thank you for that.

I received an email to an old address from kyivindependent@gmail.com with the subject "It's 5:07 a.m. in Kyiv now." Was it legit, Kyiv Independent?

You guys are absolutely incredible! I've been following you ever since the invasion started, and you've been such a quick and reliable source of information. I am so impressed by your courage, tenacity, and fortitude. Your commitment to your country is breathtaking, and I hope to show even half of your resilience if I'm ever in a situation similar to yours. I hope to visit Kyiv sometime before the war ends and would love to meet at least some of you. But if not, I'll see you at the victory party on the Maidan. Slava Ukraini!

Thank you to all the brave women and men who keep the world up-to-date on the situation in Ukraine. Slava Ukraini. This will be the year of your victory.

I made tiny candles with stearic acid. 1 tablespoon of acid in 2 kg of wax, used wick, and poured the wax into tiny molds. I found out each candle can burn hotter, but stays burning for 3 hours each. Please let people know that scraps can be melted, remade into these.

That was much more affecting to watch than I'd anticipated. Even here in the UK, unaffected by the initial phase of the war in any physical sense, I was in shock for several weeks when it started, and I can't imagine how the KI staff felt being in the middle of it and having to not only work to make sense of it and communicate that to the world, but worry about your families and friends constantly, and your own safety. I'm glad I can support you on here and promote your work to my friends and family, any small thing I can do to further understanding of the war and Ukraine's plight. Great video, and very nice to get to see and hear some of the names I've been familiar with for over a year now. Keep up the amazing work, and stay safe. Slava Ukraini.
