Dear Kyiv Independent community members,
We recently launched our new community survey – thank you to everyone who has responded so far! This really helps us learn more about who our supporters are and how we can make the community better. So far, we have just under 400 responses, and we'd like to hear from around 10% of our community for the survey to be representative. If you have a few minutes, please fill out the survey here.
We'd also like to give a warm welcome to our 103 new members this week! We're proud to be reader-funded, and we value every contribution. Thank you for supporting independent journalism and for standing with us.
Here are some highlights from the Kyiv Independent over the last week:
Our reporters Anna Myroniuk and Alexander Khrebet won the 2023 #AllForJan award with their investigation into alleged misconduct in the International Legion. Pictured above are Anna Myroniuk and Alexander Khrebet receiving the All For Jan award in Warsaw on March 2. The award was named after Ján Kuciak, a young Slovak investigative journalist assassinated in 2018.
We covered the Russian missile strike that destroyed a residential building in Zaporizhzhia. Alexander Query reported on the damage caused by the S-300 missile and interviewed survivors of the strike.
Our most popular story this week was Alexander Khrebet's "Russia’s key attack force, Wagner Group, embroiled in conflict with regular army," which looks at the tensions between Evgeny Prigozhin's private military company and the regular Russian military.
Last week, on the one-year anniversary of Russia's all-out war, China outlined a 12-point plan for its vision of peace. Thaisa Semenova's explainer analyzes China’s increasing role in Russia’s war against Ukraine and the relationship between Beijing and Moscow.
Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko also recently traveled to China. Belarus Weekly looks at Lukashenko's Beijing visit, as well as the Minsk airfield explosion that damaged a Russian A-50 early warning and control aircraft.
As Ukraine receives more modern Western tanks, Ukrainian forces have to find a way to maintain and integrate the different systems. Igor Kossov's article explains Ukraine's challenge of using nearly 40 different types of tank.
We interviewed Ukraine's Agriculture Minister. Mykola Solskyi said that Russia's grain corridor sabotage could lead to higher food prices.
Finally, we have a new member of the team! Please welcome Natalia Chekotun, who will be joining the Kyiv Independent as a video journalist.
Thank you for standing by our side as we bring independent, locally-sourced news about Ukraine to the world.
