Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

Our next community event will be a Q&A with our reporter Francis Farrell about one of Russia’s “private” military companies, the Wagner Group, and its role in the Battle of Bakhmut.

Bakhmut – a town in Donetsk Oblast with a pre-war population of around 70,000 – has been the center of some of the war’s heaviest fighting and is likely the bloodiest single military engagement of the 21st century.

The Battle of Bakhmut has lasted nearly 10 months, with the mercenary group Wagner playing a large role in it – earlier this week, Wagner’s boss and financier Yevgeny Prigozhin claimed full control over the city of Bakhmut, although these claims have not yet been independently verified.

On Thursday, Francis will answer your questions and explain what we know about Wagner’s role in Bakhmut.

Read Francis’ recent story “Ukraine strikes back around Bakhmut as Wagner reaches last streets in the city” and his interview with Russian security expert Mark Galeotti on Wagner boss Prigozhin.

Francis, if it is true that Bakhmut is now under Russian control how does this impact the pending counteroffensive?
