Dear Kyiv Independent community members,

We need your questions for the next episode of “This Week in Ukraine.” The topic this week is Elon Musk’s role in the war, after he mocked Zelensky’s plea for aid with a meme.

Musk has also provided satellite internet via Starlink, proving critical for military operations – though he purposefully left the connection turned off, when asked to do otherwise, to prevent a Ukrainian attack on Crimea last month.

To send in your questions, you can leave them in the comments below, message us on Patreon, or email our community manager Brooke at brooke@kyivindependent.com. We look forward to hearing from you.

Episode 27, “How Ukraine is destroying Russian military in Crimea” is linked above. The episode is available on YouTube and on listening platforms, with your questions starting at 17:55.

The main question I keep having is: what options does a country have once it depends on a company like Starlink? is there a way to legally force Musk, or are the terms and conditions set in such a way that it would simply lead to termination of service?

Christian Fürst

I guess there isn't. if the US happened to be at war with Russia though (which hopefully won't happen ever) they possibly could force a guy like Musk and even take over such systems.

What is the progress on Ukraine dumping Starlink in favor of more reliable partner of equal capability?

Mario Wolczko

There is much conflicting information about who has paid and is paying for Starlink equipment and services. What is the reality?

We don’t hear about other satellite internet providers being used. Why not? Are they unreliable, easily jammed, too expensive…?

What is exactly known about the rumors that Elon Musk had talks with Vladimir Putin? And if so, how do you think it might have changed his opinion on the war?

Marie Goddard

Elon Musk is dangerous to all of us. He’s a destabilizing entity with too much money and power. He puts up a satellite network and creates a dependency, then takes it away. The world needs to proceed as if Elon Musk doesn’t exist; we’d all be better off not allowing Musk’s technology into our lives.

Musk is a security risk, generally. He brings to mind several sci-fi movies, none of which ended well.
