Dear Kyiv Independent community members,
On Thursday, Oct. 5, Russia launched a missile attack on Hroza — a village in Kharkiv Oblast where about 100 people still lived — which is now one of the deadliest single Russian attacks against civilians, with 51 people killed, over half of Hroza's remaining population.
Pictured above, a man digs a grave in Hroza to bury the dead from the attack. The photo was taken by our reporter Alexander Khrebet.
Your support allows us to send reporters to cover stories like these, shedding light on Russia's atrocities. We’d like to thank you, including the 79 new members that joined us this week.
Here are some highlights from the Kyiv Independent over the last week:
We answered your questions about the war. Thank you to those who sent in your questions. Read about how Ukraine is dealing with mine fields, why Ukraine likely wont hold elections next year, and what factors would swing the war decisively in Ukraine's favor.
We reported on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and the preparations for renewed Russian attacks. Last winter, Russia's missile and drone attacks damaged half of the country's energy system – it is predicted that Russia will again put Ukraine's energy infrastructure to the test.
We wrote about two sisters working to document Ukrainian villages, before they're lost to time and war. Kate Tsurkan's story looks at the "Old Khata" project by Svitlana Oslavska and Anna Ilchenko, documenting traditional cottages and local architecture as a way to preserve an important part of Ukraine's cultural legacy.
We contributed to the investigation into Baltic-registered crypto firms, which found that Estonian-registered crypto companies were used to service payments to Russian paramilitary organizations and as a way to avoid sanctions. Read a summary of the findings here.
This week, Belarus Weekly includes the acquittal of Belarusian "death squad" member. A court in Switzerland cleared Yury Harauski of charges related to the disappearances and alleged murders of Lukashenko’s political opponents in 1999.
Episode 28 of "This Week in Ukraine" focuses on Elon Musk's role in the war. Host Anastasiia Lapatina is joined by our TikTok producer Masha Lavrova to discuss why Ukraine has a problem with Elon Musk, with your questions starting at 21:30.
Finally, we opened our community survey this week. If you haven't yet had a chance to fill it out, it's not too late! Our survey should take less than five minutes, and your feedback helps us improve our community. Thank you for standing with us.
Thank you for standing by our side as we bring independent, locally-sourced news about Ukraine to the world.
