Thank you to those who sent in their questions and who joined us for our last Q&A – our war update with our reporter Francis Farrell. Your questions are always key to our discussions!

Francis recounted the main military events of 2023, and answered your questions about what the battlefield looks like at the beginning of 2024, including the importance of defensive fortifications, the morale of Ukrainian troops and the expected conscriptions, Western military aid, and the upcoming US elections.

Here are the stories Francis mentioned: the Reuters article on defensive lines, his op-ed about the danger of Ukraine losing the war, and his story from his time with a mortar unit.

If you have any ideas about what topics you’d like to have discussed next, you can let us know by leaving a comment or emailing community manager Brooke at brooke@kyivindependent.com.

War update with reporter Francis Farrell

In a war effort motivation is essential. Selling 100.000 hectars of land to big agri companies sure make production larger but what does it leave to the ordinary Ukrainian? Modest pay as a laborer. Serving for years to be able to repair your house? You have to present those fighting and all of the population a principal idea of a good life, a possibility for all. Not something like the economically conflicting societies like todays US or France.

Thanks for the update Francis and Brooke, very informative and interesting to watch. And a cameo from Francis' cat is always a great bonus!
