Giving someone a hairpin has 2 meanings: showing favor (Gyokuyo), or showing romantic interest (Jinshi). Everyone else knows the subtext, but of course Maomao doesn't. 😂 The "curse" is introduced to Maomao, but it's actually a mystery for Jinshi to solve (which is why Jinshi hopes that nothing goes wrong at the dinner party).

Maomao is so 😍 cute with and without the makeup. I love how tough she is and I like the first glimpse of Maomao at least seeing Jinshi as something other than the beautiful eunuch.

In this time period and world they're in, it can be dangerous to be beautiful. In Maomao's case, trying to disguise herself as "average" is safer for her, because the more attractive you are, the more attention you get. And if not in a position of power or under protection, you can be kidnapped, or like she said, dragged into a back alley. I don't think she doesn't want to embrace leaning into that side of her, it's just dangerous to do so and she wants to stay under the radar as much as she can.

Imagine the poor animator who has to keep track of Maomao's freckles, do we have the right count, is this scene with or without freckles?

the hairpin can definitely mean different things! the way i interpreted Jinshi's hairpin is partially same to Gyokuyou's intent: "marking them" not necessarily as property but as a form of protection. Jinshi gave it spontaneously & if you think about it the hairpin is in fact his belonging, unlike Gyokuyou who prepared individual accessories for each lady-in-waiting. so i reckon Maomao's story spurred on feelings of protection & guilt. do think there's a sprinkle of (romantic?) interest there too 😳 now that theory re: Jinshi might've had a similar experience, i've only read the novels up to the latest manga arc but it's a very probable backstory tbh 🤔
