Monica Dain

Oh hey, you know.... Just a regular Wednesday

Paula

What a wednesday we're having John. What a wednesday.

Joe Havermann

So sorry to hear about that, John. The only thing going on in my life is the election, and that is bad enough.

Pigeon Scratch

I can't even imagine what that's like. Sounds awful

Kathleen E

Thank you for being here John. Today is a day of shock and readjustment… tomorrow will be better

Elizabeth Cook

It's not a great day for anyone. They just don't know it yet

Amanda

a thing that keeps me going is that most of human history was measurably worse than now, but they still felt that living and also raising new humans was worth it

Andy Hinterman

we're here for your bitching and moaning

Lara Glendening

had to do a work presentation at 8:30 am today which just feels so cruel

Tara

Last night I closed my social medias for the week (maybe the month), I’m not watching the news and I’ve asked my friends to act like it’s Nov 6, 2023. You two are the only people who I want to see talk about this to help me process. So, thanks. As depressed as you are, you’re helping at least one person cope.

Jodi Sonderman

Thank you both! For showing up, for being real. And your comments help me feel a bit more sane in these truly insane times.

Island Boy

I'm a bit uncomfortable listening to this conversation.

Island Boy

Follow up. Hank and John do not know who I am. And I only know them from the parts of their lives that they have chosen to share with us nerdfighters. Of course, this is fine. I have no intention of ever coming in direct contact with either of them. (Unless they hold a public event near where I live.)

Donna Emigh

My heavy heart appreciated seeing you both today.

Kalila Zunes-Wolfe

I'm so sad I missed this live, I tried so hard to leave for lunch at 2:30 but it didn't happen. I am sad with you all. Devastated. Heartbroken. Many other words. And also no words at all.

Rachael L

This ended up being accidentally the perfect day to join the Patreon. I have been meaning to for a while, but this is what I needed today, just being with good people and knowing we're all still in this together.

Christie McCormick

I don't know how or why but this helped me today. Thank you.

Marianne Thomas

If you're reading this, don't forget - just because not everyone is awesome, doesn't mean nobody is. Lots of things are gonna suck. Hold your loved ones close. And never give up. Giving up is not an option. Love from Europe 💙

Merribeth Knigge

This did make me feel a little bit better because you both understand. Stay strong

Hana Tisserand

Thank you for coming on. It helped to know we’re feeling like this together. Also, yes on using birds as a reality check.

Evan

Appreciate you guys doing this, everyone take care of yourselves.

Beanedict Cumbfurbatch

Not the worst, but certainly not the best. In the worst timeline, Biden didn’t win in 2020. In the worst timeline, Danaher never lowered the price of their TB cartridge even a little. Hell, in the worst timeline, GeneXpert never existed at all. There are good things in this timeline, and evidence that we can make more of them.

Kate Swed

Thanks for this ❤️

Teegan Lee

I came here and became a patron directly from John’s stream and am now watching this stream, and thinking maybe I’ll just never stop watching streams? That’ll work right?

Elizabeth Thesing

I need this, and John's earlier stream, today. Thank you.

Chris Spaight

Have you talked to MatPat about how he stopped being the face of Film Theory? I just checked their social blade and their subs and views seem roughly equal to before he left. Maybe his model could help you find a way to transition Complexly to less you-focused?

Sophia Cowan

I am so so sorry that someone has violated your personal space. I cannot imagine being a part of this community and thinking that was ok. It almost has to be someone outside the community intending to cause upset and I hate that so much. Also I join in your despair for our country but want you to know, feeling connected through this stream and this community is the only sanity I’ve felt today.

Jessica Lange

Thankful for this space today. I’m so sorry for the personal space/safety violations. As a teacher, I can relate to how maybe a “prank” is actually deeply unsettling and threatening. I also just wanted to say- I’ve been off twitter since the new management took over. I thought I’d miss it- I don’t. 🤷‍♀️

Emery

Re: taking the weight of Crash Course off your individual shoulders - I don't really watch Crash Course, so maybe you already do this, but can you share the load with other internet educators who are recognized personalities? Dropout is bringing on people like BDG and Jordan Myrick (and Hank!) to bolster their cast and it seems to be working well.

Philip Peterson

As long as people in either party are silent on voting system reform that isn’t true. Third party candidates could win an election if we moved to ranked choice voting which is in everyone’s (except the owners of the two parties’) best interest.

Alex Hannah

None of that matters. You think republicans care about rank voting? Dude you on me are on opposite sides now. Everyone who let trump win is now an enemy to rational thought

Alex Hannah

You should come to Philly and hear all the dumb excuses minorities come up with to justify not voting. I think the left trying to be allies to people with no respect for the sacrifices made for them is a huge mistake.

Philip Peterson

One third of the country identifies as neither Republican nor Democrat. Of the remainder are a lot of swing voters. They could just as easily say, you knew what would happen not changing the voting system, they are third party voters and always have been/always will be.

Philip Peterson

According to Data for Progress, swing voters are 23% liberal, 24% conservative. So if anything the ranked choice voting should have bipartisan support except for greed. Blaming people for not voting is wrong when the system is clearly broken and elects the wrong people. By the way, a ranked choice system likely would have elected Harris.

Alex Hannah

Hey I don’t want to get a humiliating degrading job but I didn’t get to go to school. I don’t apply for those jobs and so I starve. Sure I’m making a statement that this is unfair. At the end of the day if it results in self destruction no lessons are learned

Alex Hannah

I also don’t like either party but republicans are cartoon evil and it should be obvious using the dems to defeat them is the only way to prevent them from further deregulating the system I rely on. I get ssi. I need it or I’ll suffer and starve. Everyone with problems with the government need to take on the role and show how it’s done. Start by supporting artists like me. Since you don’t care about maintaining the welfare state I and many people rely on. The one democrats built and maintained against the constant attacks by the republicans who started the war on terror, spent billions to promote climate denial, cut funding from public schools, and rallied this country behind a jingoistic nationalist identity that divided this country. So what’s your excuse? For handing them this country. For blaming Obama and Hillary for the crap bush did. Being convinced by a flawed moral equivalency argument. You think you are smarter than me? Yet you fall for blatant anti democratic propaganda

Alex Hannah

You know trump would not have won if he had run third party. Everyone knows they never win. All they do is take votes from the side willing to listen to alternative viewpoints. The left. Just like how we’ve been divided by gender because we are the only side that actually cares about the issue. So of course making it a point to alienate allies was the plan with that. With men are trash stuff. To divide the side that should win.

Philip Peterson

Like I said, a ranked choice voting system would have likely led to Harris being elected. I am not contesting your claims about which party should have won. But I am contesting the idea that the only way is to keep First Past the Post and just try to get more Democrats on the same page. That is what was tried and it wasn’t a winning strategy.

Alex Hannah

No forcing a backwards population to elect a baby boomer woman when we are clearly not ready wasn’t a winning strategy. Biden would’ve won. Women won’t be president ubtil the next generation grows up without contradictory and self defeating waves of feminism. These women are impatient and want some sort of changing of the guard in their lifetime and it smacks of a cynical power grab. They alienated most men.

Alex Hannah

Science and rational thought need to win over and the party that actively attacks science and doctors are now in power. I don’t care about your theories. I’m talking about facts and reality

Philip Peterson

The reality is right now to avoid Trump getting elected the Democratic party has to pick “the perfect human”. That can’t be their job. Most people in this election wanted to vote against Trump but that isn’t possible because you can only vote for someone, not against. Ranked choice lets you vote against by voting for everyone but that person.

Alex Hannah

I vote against republicans that’s literally why I vote. I only started voting because of trump. So I guess people do vote against people. In fact that’s what I thought we were all doing. I guess people need their candidate to suck up to them like children

Philip Peterson

You can’t vote against. That’s the problem. That’s how we ended up electing the worst candidate and that’s why “splitting the vote” is an effective strategy. Wouldn’t be possible without FPTP.

Kailyn Champlin

This sounds like how both halves of my brain talk to each other all the time. I have been miserable since the election and don't know how to feel better aside from listening to voices of reason like you guys. Thank you for putting some sanity back into this incomprehensible world. And I'm sorry you guys have to deal with that bullshit stalker nonsense.

Rick

" just because not everyone is awesome, doesn't mean nobody is" I liked this soo much. It added warmth to a chill. I'm in the midst of getting a friend to make a print for a shirt, and I kinda like the idea of this on it. But it also could come off as snarky. So I'll just enjoy the glow it gave. Thanks Marianna

Rick

Re: "...these people pay $5 to watch me bitch" So I just watched this after popping into the community chat, and both are what I needed. I'm Canadian and was following the election too closely. I remember waking up and falling back asleep, checking on the results. And when I woke up, I decided I was not checking anything. I prescribed myself apathy because I was really going through it, in my head. My regular sites were these bubbles of unhappy thought. I am, by definition, an outsider, and the election made me feel even more alone. This video made me feel heard, and it's the only post-election follow-up I need. I don't know how long I need to be on this news detox but I just treating every headline and conversation like a spoiler alter. I avert my eyes but I do still catch spoilers. The cabinet appointments are just a reminder that I still don't think I have the mental space for it. I care about things and me being informed feels like it has no impact. Again, Im an outsider. I don't have a vote/voice. And I'm not going to spend my time being informed of what convinces others in my online echo chamber. I think I need to find my own thing to care about that I can have an impact on. I don't know what that is, but at the moment, it's my family. My kids and amazing wife. Following John and Hank throughout the years has felt like being their younger, distant cousin. This livestream provided me with some much-needed comfort, for what it's worth. Thanks for letting me "watch you guys bitch". I'd gladly pay $5.00 for that. Still working up the nerve to write in to dear Hank and John. -Rick
