Hello! Attached are three audio tests, recorded in three different rooms. Trying to figure out what the best option for recording final audio is, as I no longer have a desk in the room I used to record in. If you're interested, listen to the three tests and vote for which one sounds the best!

(the passage I am reading is the first paragraph of "The Distance of the Moon" by Italo Calvino, from the book Comsicomics. please do not ask about Qfwfq's name, I don't think it's meant to be pronounceable.)

Closet, my dude. Far and away

baldof

My laptop audio is so crap I can't tell any difference.

I can’t tell the difference with my cellphone’s speaker either, but it’s pretty different with headphones on. The living room sounds too… open? Like I can hear it’s a big room. The closet is the opposite, like you’re right next to the mic. I think the bedroom is a good middle ground.

Samuel Anderson

Tough call between bedroom and closet. I feel like in the closet recording you peaked to higher levels more? There's something that sounds like you're forcing your voice more, and the bedroom feels more natural

Joe Auerbach

So here's what I'll say. The bedroom sounds like you reading a book to me. The closet sounds like you recording very clearly in a closet. I don't hate it. Great for audiobook stuff. But the bedroom sounds clear and less ..... isolated.

I think the room quality is better in the closet, but it sounds like you're peaking your mic a lot more. Like you're too loud for it, it's running up against the ceiling of what your setup can record cleanly, so it becomes fatiguing to listen to. Bedroom is a little worse in terms of echo, but you're not running into the same problem in there. Living room is terrible, don't use living room.

JinxedJoker

The temptation to encourage you to always record in your closet is tempting, but it and the bedroom are about equivalent; so do with that what you will.

Carlos Torres

Query: What equipment do you presently use for recording? I figured I’d ask before I start making recs

Hank Pan

They’re all pretty good tbh. Maybe bedroom is the strongest overall on headphones.

Lunar

I say bedroom, but watch out. There is some audible background noise (car, truck, plane?) in the given recording for about 5 seconds starting 34 seconds in. If this is likely to happen frequently, closet is probably best.

TK

Just go with whichever works best for you. Honestly, I think the biggest difference between the recordings is that these were clearly all separate readings instead of a recording played into each room. Playing the first sentence in rapid succession, you hear completely different levels of emotion, ranging from dutiful bedtime story to barely suppressed laughter. There is no way that didn't affect the polling results if someone was having trouble choosing.

My spouse sends me out to the movies when she records ^-^

Josh Grey

Bedroom is the overall winner. It has the least room noise and I am guessing you have the most soft furnishings in there. If you want to improve the closet, you could probably hang up some towels in there and reduce the close echoes and get it better than the bedroom.

SilentDis

closet sounds "close", bedroom sounds good, even if there's a touch of reverb. living room would need you post processing a lot of room tone, i fear.
