SOMEHOW things just keep hitting new highs.

Not just within this particular album, but from album to album as well.

Also, this song was MINGYU'S TRACK. He was SICK.

Surprising form, surprising flow, surprises left and right. We go in depth with it all so don't worry :D but just know that we were EXTREMELY surprised by the direction this one took (and the fact that Trauma, too, was a "Han-C written track" XD)

Beautiful stuff.

Pinwheel.

No clue.

Please, links :D

Yes.

Okay.

Enjoy <3

Please consider doing these unreleased hiphop unit songs which they only ever performed live. These two songs are in my opinion some of the best songs to come out of the hiphop unit. The 1st one is Ideal Cut 2018 stage and the 2nd one is Diamond Edge 2017 stage Please consider 🥺 1 : first is Un Haeng il Chi : https://youtu.be/njl0ttBOzak?si=3AJmX_qDQ0i5JtIx 2 : second is Lotto https://youtu.be/vPfkfATSwec?si=ouQ0jX3wEhva0yDC please I really hop you guys consider it.

Btw every hip hop unit member wrote their own rap verses based on past personal traumatic experiences but Mingyu was the only one who didn’t have one because he’s had a lovely soft life with no experiences like that so they gave him the chorus which he wrote😂

konekochan

The melody and delivery: 🕺💃🎶🎵🎤🥳 The lyrics: 🥹🥺😰😭😢😫😓 Admit it, Han C, did you ghostwrite this album??? Loll, I also love the random svt callbacks. Lost it when highlight started playing and also Mingyu Paris Baguette Appreciation for all the Hiphop unit members <3 Like other comments in the previous video said, this song contains their struggles, experiences and fears. But Mingyu didn't necessarily have that "trauma" experience thats why the chorus was given to him. It's so meaningful to have them so vulnerable in a song like this - Mingyu: He really has one of my favorite voices in SVT, and I think he really really shines in the Face the Sun album. If you loved his singing here just wait til you get to the Rolling Stone Video! I can just listen to him all day - Vernon: His flow?? Hello?? His little adlibs in the performance is also my favorite 💓 He usually sprinkles these in HHU performances and it adds *so* much to the performances - Wonwoo: This man can go *hard* in rapping when he wants to (see also: Lalali)!! And his visuals in the Arena Tour performance 🫣🫣 GORGEOUS - SCoups: do not get me started on this sexy man. The low tone rapping, the delivery, the way he always acts possessed by the song on stage. It's like aura +1000 I also hope you can watch their Ode To You performance of this when you get to the album-wrap up <333 Links for Pinwheel! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the lyrics for this one. This song was inspired by Woozi's dream of a pinwheel. (And yes, all the unit songs of this album has an MV!) - MV: https://youtu.be/aarBJqitCJE - Mnet: https://youtu.be/HCXDnuyfa5E - Arena Tour: https://youtu.be/BiumVFykgRE And it's finally time!! If you can, after reacting to Pinwheel, please watch their Rolling Stone video performance of all the unit songs here (it's the ultimate must watch for this album) https://youtu.be/qFcsPXQWN6U

i just wanna say that trauma is a song that tells about the story of their anxieties, struggles & personal experiences. a song that everyone can relate to til now. ‎ ‎ the mv has a lot of symbolisms & many have tried to write about it but i've always loved this genius article. hope you get to check it out as well - on your own or during the reaction for you to further know how the song came about ‎ ‎https://genius.com/discussions/449082-Song-highlight-seventeen-trauma

p.s. thanks for checking out the clips on the hhu part switch last video 😂😂 now u understand why poor vernon struggled

Hip Hop Unit lyrics are written by them. Vernon writes alot of the lyrics with Woozi on Seventeen songs too! If Han'C writes like Seventeen. I want to hear his music! Someone send me a link!!!! 🩵🩷🩵🩷🩵🩷

Han'C: "S.Coups is like licking my earhole, man!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Here for the Mingyu's voice praise ! His voice is so warm and husky but without sounding dark somehow, it adds so much character to a song. Wait until you get to Face the Sun, his voice shines so much in it. The unit tracks are the highlight of this album for me, they're so good ! Trauma was based on the personal experiences (traumas) of each member but Mingyu, sweet optimistic guy that he is, couldn't remember any trauma that he could write about so he got the chorus instead lol. This song was the first glimpse we had of S.Coups' growing stage anxiety though we didn't know it at the time. It culminated into him having to take a mental health hiatus at the end of 2019 and you can see the events leading up to it in their documentary Hit The Road, which follows them on their Ode To You tour. It's a very interesting peek into a more serious side of Seventeen and what they go through behind the scenes to put on a good show for their fans. For Pinwheel, the Arena Tour or Mnet links are good if you want the original arrangement. Personally, I really like the re-arrangement they did for the Power Of Love concert : - https://youtu.be/9RDJGIoJRAg.

Rolling Stone! Rolling Stone! Rolling Stone! Rolling Stone! (I cant wait, im bursting at the seams with anticipation).

Love the voice tones of the hiphop unit members, the warmth/depth and textures they have sound so lovely (and sexy)! I think they potentially have the most range musically of the three unit, and play around with genres more where the vocal unit and performance unit feel like they hone in on more of a consistent sound/colour over the years. That being said, I do find hiphop unit tracks can be a bit hit or miss for me personally, and most of my favourite HH unit songs are their later ones. Trauma is probably somewhere on the middle of the list for me if I was going to rank them, I like it more than their really early songs but I don't have it on any of my playlists. Nothing against the song, just not really a genre I gravitate towards as much.

tim

me too!!

Coming here after watching the Seventeen NEW tour encore that had, in my opinion, the best mixing out of all Seventeen concerts I've watched, and hearing the praise for the HHU vocals is awesome. Like, YEAH IT'S TRUE, THEY'RE REALLY GOOD! More vocal HIPHOP UNIT PLEASE!!! And Trauma is so good, lyrics as well as flow and the way Mingyu shines in it is awesome. Next we have PINWHEEL. Renowned by many as THEE BEST VOCAL UNIT TRACK OF ALL TIME! I think I'll save the thoughts on that for when you listen to it, and instead just give you links! Official MV: https://youtu.be/aarBJqitCJE?si=VJLNFwvE9ae4duAO Stage Mix: https://youtu.be/yXQkeKEiG_g?si=FJphEmdGI8XbCLeo Mnet Present Special: https://youtu.be/HCXDnuyfa5E?si=Z-aTgG1jxvr2Ds1C And since you've finally completed collecting all three unit songs, the video from Rolling Stones with them performing all of them: https://youtu.be/qFcsPXQWN6U?si=euJBn_IVf7SHszdd

Firm….like tofu. Lol HanC’s side comments and d’some’s “i’m done” face always entertain me.hahaha Thanks for the reaction❤️ And thanks for appreciating seventeen more and more. They deserve it.

Omggg these are great links too!!

Jocelyn A

my favorite part is vernon’s first verse!! idk what it is but it’s so addictive

going yellow

every week i dream of seeing 언행일치 haha also a small clarification for the boys, Lotto was a track Vernon released in 2015 ft Don Mills, hhu performed their remix of it for their ideal cut tour. both s tier stages.

going yellow

also if you're considering reacting to un haeng il chil, which imo must be paired with the unit switch stage by the vocal unit. i can throw a copy of the clips on g drive if needed, should be in pretty decent res. also recommend for future hhu dive maybe, the diamond edge hhu stage starting with wonu's joker+what's the problem+mmo = pretty noice also han c' orgasm word count: 2?

Jotato

Since you will have heard all 3 of the unit tracks next video, please please please listen to the rolling stone version of them. It’s a crazy good version of all the tracks, especially Lilili Yabbay. Here is the link. https://youtu.be/qFcsPXQWN6U?si=aJ5l0wqrRNxDznLu

Geniegetgenies

Wait till we get to Face The Sun my god it’s like Woozi threw every song into an arena and made them fight to the death just to get a single spot into that album 😌

strfre

follow again version ♡

This is indeed so good. Also, the point where Han-C said he got tingles on his back, I was also having tingles on my back listening to that part! AAAAAAAAH! But yeah, really good. Can't wait for Pinwheel tho! One of my fav Vocal Unit track AAAHHHH! P.S. Funny how we saw Danny in the end in that thumbnail haha.

캐럿입니다 💎

I really hopr they do this because this is such a different side of Hiphop unot and the lyrics are sooooo gooddd!!!! fingers crossed hope they consider it.

Nina

Talking about mingyu reminds of his viral Shadow performance, I don't know if you checked it yet !

Kkkkkk

Omg yesss I really love the diamond edge hhu stage🥹

Lalalii💚

OMG you guys kill me 😂😂😂 The way I choked laughing when Han-C said, “it feels like Scoups is licking my earlobe” 😭😭🤣 P.S. I think you guys should react to SEVENTEEN “In My Room” on Rolling Stone after “Pinwheel”!!!! They perform “Lilili Yabbay,” “Trauma,” and “Pinwheel”!! I really, really, really hope you do it, because it’s sooo good 🤩🤩

Erika

I tend to prefer the more mellow hip hop unit tracks and Trauma is battling it out with If I as my favourite. I really like Vernon's verse, especially the way he starts, but the lyrics of the whole song is what gets me. And next is Pinwheel. I love Pinwheel too lol. The unit tracks on this album are something else. Also, I think we need to accept the fact that Han-C was spiritually Seventeen even if he didn't know it. The sparks of recognition at the beginning of some of the songs are so funny to see.

The NO SKIP ALBUM :-)

Get ready for an essay from me cuz Trauma is that song for me. I'll separate my comments so it's less overwhelming. Hope that's cool. I totally agree about Mingyu's voice. One thing I love about SVT is how each member has their unique vocal colour and style and how the company never made them change their voice to sound like a 'typical' kpop voice (nothing against that voice, but it sucks when everyone sounds the same). I think it helps that they make their own songs and Woozi and Bumzu write songs with the members' style and voice in mind. I think Mingyu would be gratified to hear you describe this song as his song because his songwriting process for this track was rough. So apparently, S.Coups came up with the idea and concept for Trauma and proposed it to the HHU. Both Vernon and Wonwoo were immediately on board, but poor Mingyu did not understand what Coups was talking about so Wonwoo literally had to draw him a picture. The picture was of a person trapped in a box and this became the key visual concept behind the MV. Mingyu understood what the song was about but apparently, he spent weeks trying and failing to write lyrics for his verses and he said there are pages of crossed out, and abandoned lyrics that he rejected. I have to give credit to Mingyu here for both his artistic integrity and respect for his member's pain. He refused to diminish the song with lyrics that didn't have express the same degree of hurt, vulnerability and honesty that the others had. It's just that whenever he tried to dive into his well of pain to write the lyrics, it was dry. To be clear, I think every member of SVT has been through at least some shit. Just being a kpop trainee and idol can be traumatic, and Coups, Vernon and Wonwoo also have painful experiences unique to them as well, but there are absolutely things Mingyu went through that even Carats know about that he might've sung about, but everyone metabolizes pain differently and some people can get past things faster or easier than others. It's not that anyone is better or worse as a person, nor is it about being strong or weak, it's just a thing some people have and Mingyu definitely has that. Even he and the other members allude to that. He went to Woozi and the HHU and told them he just couldn't come up with anything so they basically said, welp, at least you tried and gave him the chorus and thank goodness for that because it's amazing. Mingyu joked that the song Trauma became a trauma for him because of how stressed he was trying to come with something for the song. As to how the HHU changed their performance style for the Japan Arena Tour, I think it makes sense that they traded depth of meaning for breadth in their performance not just because it was a stadium, which required more energy as you pointed out, but also because it was for a predominantly Japanese audience that doesn't necessarily speak Korean or understand the lyrics without subtitles so presentation was given greater precedence since the meaning of the lyrics would be lost to most of the audience. Just a theory though.

Jill Estrada

My favorite HHU song! Can’t wait for you guys to watch the Rolling Stone special!!!!!!

Second part of my essay lol. Coups mentioned in an interview that he likes to 'wear' the songs he performs as costumes. I saw an insightful comment mention that Coups gets possessed by the song he performs and I think it's equivalent to what he said. I really like that about how he performs because you don't need to understand the lyrics to understand the song. There's something kind of ominous in hindsight with Coups' part in this song because, as I'm sure you'll recall since Carats mentioned it a lot in your GoSe reactions, S.Coups had to take a mental health hiatus in Nov 2019 but Teen;age was released Nov 2017, pre-diagnosis and before the fear/anxiety he's singing about reached its peak. Coups confirmed in a few documentary interviews that he was diagnosed with anxiety disorder and panic disorder. He actually experienced his first panic attack during a concert. My friend has a panic disorder and panic attacks are truly awful but experiencing one (especially for the first time) on stage, in front of tens of thousands of people is horrific. Worse still, panic attacks can trigger without any specific cause so the usual advice is to avoid the place/occasion/situation that caused the attack but for Coups that would mean he would have to quit being an idol which he refuses to do (thank goodness, but also, poor guy). He said that because his panic attack happened on stage, he always worries that it will happen on stage again. Obviously, he did get treatment to help with his anxiety, which is great, but panic attacks remain an ever-looming threat for those with that disorder. When Han-C mentioned that he initially thought that the song would be stronger and darker because of the title, it made me wonder how Coups would've written his verses post-panic attack and post-diagnosis. That's why I find his parts ominous because I think if you want to capture a panic attack in song, it would sound loud, overwhelming and disorienting but it's hard to sonically sustain that energy and there's a sort of catharsis to the moment of attack compared to the creeping dread of waiting to be ambushed. The vibe I got from how Coups portrays his trauma is of anxiety quietly building, constant pressure and it slowly choking you. The events of his real life end up altering my perception of this song so there's an added dimension to it: the slow culmination of that build up, the panic attack that's hiding in ambush that even the singer isn't fully aware he's expressing. Listening to 'Trauma' and 'Me', you go on a journey with Coups. I'm glad he's doing better and I hope he never gets another panic attack. I wish good mental/physical health to everyone (Sebongs, Carats, Sausages, everybody). Now I'm going to break this tension and kick my analysis into the gutter: VERY interesting that Han-C had the reactions he did to S.Coups' breathless/asphyxiated style. I'm not here to yuck your yum, my guy. You do you, Han-C(hristian Grey), you do you. XD

PaperCrown

You don't need to react to this but here's Seungkwan and DK messing around and doing their cover of Trauma (aka, Hunger Song). It's only 42 secs but it's hilarious: https://youtu.be/mT6D5raDDgQ

zoey ro

this is the album I am most excited for them to get to, I cannot waitttt

Mingyu did an R&B song, with Wonwoo and Lee Hi. his voice truly suited that song! i hope you'll check it out, the song is called Bittersweet 😆

lks17

Little tmi we have a funny saying "힙합은 얼굴로 하는거다"

tim

Lol

Handsome Sausages

So fun fact, we actually checked out Un Haeng il chi wayyyyyy back in the days when we first started SVT journey in one of our top tier hangout sessions BUT it wasn't the Ideal Cut one AND we don't remember it cuz we had no time to relisten or talk about the track much. We'll def get to these soon :D

Handsome Sausages

That is probably the most Mingyu thing I've ever heard XD Love this

Handsome Sausages

Google drive, gotcha! We'll keep this in mind and ask for it again when the time comes!

Handsome Sausages

Very cool two part essay. Enjoy it a lot so thank you! Just to add to your idea about what panic attack would sound like in a song, I actually think that it could totally sound the way it does in Trauma, and not necessarily loud and disorienting :) so if it was post-diagnosis, I imagine it was just as likely that the song turned out even quieter and more composed, but with the same overall vibe Trauma has!

PaperCrown

Very true! Honestly, a quieter and more composed version would scare me a little. Not sure why.

Hannie 1004

We also have a Good News!!! "ALL 13 MEMBERS HAVE DECIDED TO RENEW THEIR CONTRACT" 🥹 In this Diamond sh*t for life 💎🩷🩵 Virtual hugs Caratssss 🫂🥹🥰 More music, more content & more reaction vid to look forward 🤩
