Let's say you bought a $1000 AR15. You are using a 12x power scope for accuracy testing off a bench. Your trigger is xlnt in this AR. Using PMC 55 gr FMJ ammo, which has proven 1 MOA capable here in TNP [depending on lot), what accuracy would you expect and makes you happy with this gun? In the second part of your response, what accuracy would make you happy from a $650 AR15?

Pie plate accuracy seems good enough out in the country.

Adam

Moa 1 inch or less I got a stock smith and wesson mp15 hits 1 moa amd only paid 650 so if I spend that much money it better be worth it. Like My sig spear x series worth it. Lot of features.

Ian

anything that shoots 55gr fmj 2" or under at any price is pretty solid.

STLParkRanger13 (IG: Sharpshooterjon)

With PMC ammo, I'd be happy with 3 MOA. I've had nothing but poor luck with it, even with nicer barreled uppers. And don't get me started on PMC .308 ammo. My MSR-10, which groups very well with most ammo, struggles with it.

Chris Fischer

1000 ar better be 1.5 or better. 650 2.5-4 inches at 100

darby shaw

Happy with two MOA from the $650 AR

Aquanaut

I think Smith & Wesson have shown you should reasonably expect an accurate rifle even at the lower end of the price range. I've watched content with what I consider expensive (1500.00 plus) rifles that had less accuracy and people were happy with it. I'm no expert, but I do expect value for my dollars and some of those so called high end rifles are a rip off.

Robert Palfy

military 62 gr green tip is 2.5 moa out of the 20 in m16a2. so 3 moa better is good to 300 meters. the yaw effect for damage is less them a 100 meters m193 and green tip out of a 20 in anyways. in iraq the green tip would usually start its yaw after exiting the target. the 14.5 in m4 had lesd then 50 meter yaw range. so most of the time your just punching .224 holes through targets. info from Doc Roberts

Bill The Broken

$1000 AR better be moa or i wouldnt be slightly interested. A $650 model - id be happy with 2-2.5 moa

Rick Grad

2MOA out of a $650 rifle if I’m using PMC Bronze. 3MOA with mystery ammo/steel ammo. I honestly don’t have a 3 MOA upper. We live in glorious times for ARs.

JoQuin

Funny how yesterday I went to the outdoor range to shoot my 18” criterion barrel “SPR” and used 223 PMC bronze to get sighted in and printed a 1”-1.2” inch 5 round group….. then shot a 7round group with 5.56 m193 PMC and barely got a 2.75” MOA 🤷🏻‍♂️

Charles Wester

I'm happy if I can hit the paper. Uncle Sam taught me that hitting a man-sized silhouette at 300 meters is the pinnacle of marksmanship!

Kinoons

1” for a $1000 gun is expected. If a $650 gun can sling rounds at an inch I’m really happy, 1.5-2” more expected.

Mark Horan

If I buy my own barrel I want 1 moa. Otherwise 2 moa for purchased AR 15. Too cheap to buy an AR that I would expect 1 moa except maybe Rock River Arms. Good poll to get are minds off politics.

David Elkins

4 moa out of a $650 AR. 4 moa is milspec. Anything less than 4 moa on a low budget gun like that is just gravy.

DudeDudeDude

2” with 55gr 556. 1-1.5 with higher quality ammunition. $650 gun I would be happy with 3 moa with 55gr 556 and 2moa with quality ammunition. FWIW I do most my ar shooting with open sights. In my experience it is rare to see an ar shoot moa unless using high quality ammo or a particular load that it just happens to perform well with. I am talking 10 shot groups here too. 3 shot groups are plotless IMO.

Matthew Sinn

To make me happy at 100yds from a 16" barrel: 2 inches. To make me excited: 1 inch

TechNeck

$650 ar.. 2 moa.. even $500 (cad) norinco ars put that out

Savagemann

I voted 2 " because there isn't a 1.5" option in the poll.

The Nutnfancy Project

M193 or XM193 is hot but very inaccurate. I regularly will sling these rounds into 5 inches at 100 yds. Notorious ammo. But really nice inside 100 yds I'd say.

The Nutnfancy Project

Well said I would agree with that. I'm an accuracy snob and in the AR it comes down to barrel quality (w 1 MOA ammo)

Daniel Andrews

I’m not using a scope. However after sighting in at 25 yards and punching ragged holes at the bullseye I can immediately hit 300 yard steel targets with ease. I believe they are ar500 torso targets. 20 inch using iron sights. 16 inch using a red dot. Both 400$ uppers that I won’t part with.

Wyoming Homesteader

I've had my duty rifle for 8 years, the cost then was $550 on sale and $800 normally. 55gr is a little iffy for that rifle but 62+ has been sub MOA since the day I purchased it. 55 or less is generally 1.5 - 1.75. My wife's was a black friday purchase for $415 normal price was $800 7 years ago. It is sub MOA with 55+ anything less opens to 1-1.25, but she has an 18" barrel. Both were prebuilt and both weigh less than 6lbs. You don't need to spend 1000s to get a good rifle, but you do need to do the research on it and preferably test it before you buy it.

squealer

Wife said 1 inch accuracy would make her happy with any gun. No comment on the load.

Chase Ferguson

Using match ammo I would expect 1.5 or less period from a 1000 dollar rifle configuration as you outlined. For a 650 dollar rifle I’d be pleased with 3 inch and tickled to see 2 inches or better. But any properly assembled AR-15 with free floating barrels should do 3~ inches with quality ammunition. If I have a rifle that opens up more than 3 I would sell it immediately.

Tim Bone

I'd say 2-inch groups is what I would expect from my shooting with that setup. 3-inches if I had too much caffeine before I shot.

Tim Bone

😂 Sick bastard

Alex H

I have a $500 ar15 that shoots under an 1" (2012 price) I'd hope $1000 guns today are doing the same. Most of my AR15"s are 10+ years old.

Clint Allison

When you cross the 1K price entry, I think the thing should shoot darn close to 1MOA over 5 shots, suppressed. No reason any AR should shoot over 2 MOA with good ammo. If it does, it's getting a new barrel. White Oak being my current choice. If you're shooting without a can, good luck.

Zach Maddox

Its pretty normal for budget stuff to shoot moa now a days. No reason to expect less.

Casey Jones

At the $1k mark, I’m pretty much expecting 1MOA. For bolt actions I’m expecting sub-MOA at the 1k mark. It’s not too much to ask seeing I have rifles that exceed both criteria

“Milk Man” Matt Moore

I am not an excellent marksman. If I a doing my part I can expect 2-3 MOA out of an AR & about 3-4 MOA out of an AK as a norm. I don’t own a 12x scope. I know that I’m the limiting factor and my rifles can do better.

chris l

Having just built my own 1k at featuring a rainier arms barrel and using a 10x scope I have been in the 1-1.5 range consistently when I'm doing my part. I would expect the new PSA sabre stainless options to do the same as well. For $650 anything under 2.5 on the top end and I'm happy.

Ben Wagner

$1k is where I think you should be able to get a quality barrel in an AR15 off the shelf. I would expect probably 1.5 MOA. At $650 you’re clearly in the budget realm and 2-3 MOA is reasonable. My feeling is any modern gun made by professionals should be able to shoot better than 3 MOA with capable ammo.

Jesse (Sphinx)

I’ve built guns for $600 that were 1-inch guns. I expect all modern ARs to be 1 inch or better with good ammo.

Firearms Fuel&Fabrication

I've changed my expectations over time. And after watching the guys at hornady podcast I have changed to 20 shot groups. And most of my M.O.A guns were not actually 1 but more like 1.5~2

Jacob

Sub moa from the bucks-up gun. Around 1 moa from the budget-friendly rig.

Mattimus

Pmc 55 is exactly what I have bulk stocked. 2K of which is never touched, as per nutns bare-minimum recommendation.

Not SAWC

I would always expect a minimum of 1 MOA from any rifle. If I am paying $1000 or more it would have to perform, in my opinion.

B05T0N22

I think it would be awesome for Nutn to do a realistic accuracy video. I think there’s a lot of talk about how everyone claims to be a sub MOA capable shooter. Very few people have the time to attain or maintain that level of shooting skill.

Andrettski

This is just reminding me I need to get out and do more shooting, my ammo isn't going with me when I die.

Michael B warner

Nutn could you look into reviewing the Henry AR-7 .22 as a possible replacement option for the Papoose in a BOK role? The Papoose is very hard to find these days and when you do it's way expensive for what it is. I have been wanting to integrate a lightweight rifle into my BOK, but the best I could do was a 10/22 takedown. My problem with that as you'll agree is weight, the AR-7 is a featherlight in comparison. However it's an unknown platform, and I'd hate to spend the money on it if it sucks ass. Thanks for all your hard work it's much appreciated 👍

Rob Miller

This is a good comment. At our club we have a 300 yard range. Yes it all starts at 100 but for happy…we require all autos (ak/ar) to make hits at 300 on a ipcs plate with any scope, red dot or irons. We keep hella brands and factory loads for testing. Eventually we find something factory it likes. Yes hand loads and suppressed typically helps things.

Pickles_45

Bought a reciver, barrel, lower, etc? 1moa is achievable. Off the shelf AR at that price? 2 moa.

Rob Miller

I doubt he has time for that. It can take 6 months to a year (of range trips) to dial in just one gun. Most people don’t do that. Thats why we rarely see 1 MOA on the range. ….Except on our targets.

Lee Harrell [W5GCF]

2” is realistic, but I won’t use a rifle regularly if it’s not 1”.

Corbin McNeal

I personally don't want a gun that shoots over 1 moa. I want 1 moa or less.

Mudtoa

Gotten 1.5 MOA from a Palmetto special. That is my Max tolerance.

Guy Actual

I have only purchased one fully built rifle, and it was my first. All the rest I have started with lower receivers. The best part about learning to build your own rifle, is that you can properly service and replace components. This is knowledge that everyone should have that want to be prepared for the future. Historically, most AR's out of the box were expected to have a 3 moa accuracy. Over the years as technology has gotten better for both manufacturing of the components and the ammunition. OR If you are like me, and have the ability to build your own rifle, there are many techniques that can be used to better the chances of good accuracy.

Guy Actual

I too am looking at this. The Papoose is so awesome, my buddy has one. The reviews i have seen on the AR-7 havn't been great, and would love to hear his thoughts.

Han So Oh

My only $1k+ rifles are my 2 geiselles. But they're 14.5"and 10.5", so I've never tried grouping either with a magnified optic. My most accurate AR is a 224valkyrie PSA, that did 0.75 moa with AE ammo.

Steve Dutton

2.5" with that load and my skill set.

Michael B warner

I would love to find a reasonable deal on a Papoose. I'm just not willing to drop 5 or 6 hundred bucks on a sweet gun that will be essentially dead to me in my BOK. The reviews I've seen on the AR-7 have been up and down as well. When it comes to gun reviews he is the only one I really trust!

Aaron Carrington

I only shoot handloads so anything over 1” is not good. But I’m an accuracy whore. Lol.

Elijah Ballard

My main use for the AR15 is self defense. I have kids so in a close range engagement 2” is enough to hit my target and long range targets I plan on just throwing lead to cover my get away.

BadgerTails

THAT is a tough one for metrics: my DDM4V7 upper from PlanetOptics was less than $1K, and then I do AP lowers with my pref trigger group, BCG, etc,,,,,you get my point. White Oak Armament uppers have been stellar so far(less than $700) , and I've just about gone exclusive to monthly budgeted ammo haul being 75 or 77gr stuff. Doing WROL cold bore bullseye shots?!

Bernt Ryggs

Sounds like the limiting factor is the ammo. If the ammo is mechanically able to print moa groups, a high dollar rifle with that setup should be more accurate than the pmc ammo, provided the shooter does their part

Outrider950

What I expect…is sadly not what would even begin to make me happy.

Michael B warner

If I were bench testing in my lead sled I would be happy with 1.5 to 2 moa but certainly no more than that. Although I'm not a big fan of 5.56 I'm more of a SAPR guy, because the 308 is excellent on Deer. 😁

Steven Salina

For the 1k AR I'd expect 1 MOA, for the 650 I'd move it to 1.5 maybe 2 MOA.

Gilbert Cuzdey Jr

For a thousand, 1.5-2 moa. For 1500 I expect 1 moa which I get out of my Rainier arms ruc mod 2. For 500 or 600 bucks, anything under 3moa.

Michael Me

I think 1MOA for a rifle length upper should be standard on any AR. Sidenote does anyone remember the double owl days

Joseph

7 inches PSA FOR LIFE

Steelhorses

Milspec is 3in iirc. But I'd gladly settle for a rifle that shoots 2" with mixed ammo.

Maplebrew

I’d give twist rate into the grouping size I.e. a 1:7 twist may not exactly group well w 55g but the 77s might be sub 1.1” (moa). But I’d be willing to be most people’s can’t shoot themselves, nor their rifles sub moa. If you think so, show me a 20 round group

Peter Lynch

I tend to be happy with milspec moa. IMO, good enough for WROL. Other’s milage may vary.

Timothy Carswell

With technology and manufacturing today, I think we are past the days of 2 MOA being accectable.

Timothy Mayfield

The 1K rifle should be 1 MOA with good ammo. 650 Rifle should be 2 MOA or less with good ammo. Cheap training ammo, add 1 to 1.5 MOA to both.

Andrew Todd

I haven't purchased an over the counter ar in years, but if I put one together and it won't shoot 1 moa it promptly gets torn apart.
