Another by-request outdoor camping item. Donors wanted me to review a solid car camping tent. This is not your regular box store crap 40 lb tent with steel poles, a quick-to-tear tarp bottom, blow out zippers, and a shitty 1/4 fly. This is a Kelty Tent, the "Wireless" series (great name). It really is a cross between a backpacking and vehicle tent. It's heavier as it uses fiberglass poles but they're stronger. Here in field you'll see it's full fly, great colors in this generation, build quality, storage features, ease of setup, ventilation, and the other Nutnfancy highlights. The price is amazing for the quality and I hope Kelty keeps this one, and the Grand Mesa (below) b. they're that good.

***Will review the "Far Out" series too, very xlnt also

Interesting discussion. I picked up a core a while back for the car camping. Ease of setup and ease of takedown are considered highly. A comfortable tent is a tent I can stand fully upright. If I can not stand upright then its a tent I don't need to use.

Always ditch the crap stakes and get some MSR ground hog stakes. Get a rubber mallet from hf and bring it to hammer stakes.

Not sure why the companies use the term wireless. A wire is typically a copper stand or solid copper length of metal covered with insulation. I know of no tent which used wire.

I like this series. It’s fun to see affordable and high quality stuff that isn’t part of the fad culture. You don’t need thousands of dollars setups of rooftop tents, awnings, fridge freezers, and gizmos to go car camping like folks on YouTube want to show you. That stuff can be neat, but you don’t need it to have a good time.

Sir, I don’t. Currently I’m just using the issued Army light fighter tent. It’s adequate for what it is and is probably a good emergency shelter if someone just wants a relatively durable and inexpensive surplus tent. In general, I enjoy all of your reviews, regardless of topic. You’re also the only one I pay money for on Patreon.

Looks nice and should be more than strong enough for most people. Wind resistance of 30mph is a normal day for us though.

Camping productions are always a favorite. The MSR Freelite 2 is current selection for backpacking. The Freelite 2 is significantly larger than than a bivy for only an additional pound. I made a footprint from Tyvek and rubber cement. The largest problem with backpacking is most people want comfort and sixty five degree weather; thus I sometimes have to go it alone. I look forward to cooler temps. so some friends can be convinced to get off couch. Thank you for the continued effort and dedication.

Did I miss the gunnison replacement link? Or am I just blind? Got the gunnison for my son's scout tent, then my camping tent. It is wore out.

Kelty has been a favorite tent of Boy Scouts (or whatever they're calling themselves these days) for ever! For car camping, I prefer the larger 6 person tents even if it's just me as I can basically set up a "palace" inside with sitting area, sleep area and gear area. Backpacking I take a 3 person tent, but I'm a big boy and like the room and tend to hike a pack heavier than the avg backpacker.

BadgerTails

Yes! Excellent! Thank You!

I've upgraded from a small Kelty two person tent that's just too small for the level of camping comfort I want. The old tent has served me very well over the last almost 20 years and it'll stay in my gear stash for lighter load-out trips. I ultimately decided on an REI Base Camp 4 for car camping. The three primary criteria in my search were: 1. Can fit my full size single cot with room on the ends 2. I can stand up inside (I'm 5'9") 3. Full rain fly down to near the ground It's a bit on the spendy side, there are a couple small difficulties setting it up alone, and yeah REI is not a company I would generally support. From a value and quality sandpoint, and being a tent that met my priorities, I'm pretty satisfied. Would be interesting to see what others in the project think.

Love the tent reviews. I got a 3 person northface this summer that you reviewed. Very nice ⛺️

Currently my base camping/car tent is a big Agnes flying diamond 8. It’s huge and heavy, but when weight isn’t a concern that tent is damn near bombproof and has room enough for a squad.

this is good timing for me. I need a tent for boat camping. The problem we have had is wind. I need a 10x10 for the number of people with me. but I wanted to be able to stand up. I have found wind destroying my tent. a boat tent needs to be somewhat compact not insanely heavy and it needs to be a dome style because we setup in lake powell sand. my regular car camping tent is kodiak. its about 50 pounds. but its not going to crap out on you.

oh second comment noticed your sleeping pad and bag. I spend about 30 nights a year camping. I use the big agnes diamond park sleeping bag with their insulated q core pad. its amazing and solves issues I never thought were issues. it keeps the pillow from sliding off your sleeping pad. its got dual zips allowing great temp control. its also a large sleeping bag. the ultimate car camping setup, highly highly recommend. I have the diamond park and echo park as well. The echo park is synthetic and has flannel lining. I prefer taffetta and slickness inside because it doesn't wad up when I turn over at night. both are excellent.

It took many years but the car camp/overland industry finally took a page out of something that had existed for some time in the hunting world and adapted it to simplify car camping. The cavoite is that it is not a tent that will fit easily in anything smaller than a midsize suv and even some of the trucks with shorter beds these days, but does stow on a rack quite nicely. The Gazelle T4 (or other in their series) Popup tent. They go up and down in a matter of minutes, no external poles, and include their own footprint rather than a separate one. They are heavy though with that cam system for their internal skeleton. Not a big issue in Vehicular Camping though.

Love Kelty products. I still have my sleeping bag from around the mid 1990’s

Great color on the tent

For car camping I always size up. Normally you do 1 size bigger for comfort but for car camping I'll go 2-3 people bigger just because I'm not worried about weight. So for 2 people I'd go 4 person tent

Aquanaut

Me camping: 1 person tent. Her and I : 8 person gotta have room for the 18 inch thick queen size air mattress. Serioisly it's ridiculous...

Thanks for the review on this tent love the gear reviews much as guns and knives. However I’m a little confused about camping with “vegetables “?
