A by request bolt action rifle review. Here we will consider the upgrades on the Ruger American Gen II Bolt Gun. We go back in TNP history and consider its ground breaking predecessor along with its competition. Then we go infield and see if the upgraded Ruger American delivers. You might be surprised at the outcome.

Buddy just got a .300blk and canned it.

Ian

It's amazing.

Moe Mansour

Did you see the new S&W Classic 10? Looks identical to the original. Saw it on a 2025 shot show vid.

Don C

I haven't watched the video yet but noticed the description says Wyatt is gone forever. That wording makes it sound like he died. What happened to Wyatt?

Ian

Keltec has that new 5.7 pistol, no mags, 20rnds in permanent grip fed with clips. bok all the way

Matthew Sinn

I have to toss in the Savage Ultralite in 6.5 Creed. Yes I already bought it; no I don't need your validation. For other readers, it's the best cost effective light weight bolt gun out there as far as I'm concerned.

2A_Overland

The bolt on mine was the same way, I have the same exact rifle in .308. It’s extremely fun with a can and was hitting steel at 150 yards in a few sight in shots.

Moe Mansour

I saw that too. Interesting concept.

I have a gen 1 in 7.62x39. It’s a good, not great, gun that’s cheap to shoot and is fun. I don’t think I’ll be picking up the gen 2 ruger American based on this review. Too many guns and not enough money lol

Matt Geiger

There's an adapter to take AK mag, it's literally the reason I bought it but still doesn't punch steelcase every time though

I love the look of the new ones but I’m not spending the money I’ll keep shooting my gen1 6.5 Grendel 16” ranch model. I have several 6.5 Grendel ar15’s so I already had plenty of mags and ammo. Even with just a 16” barrel I’m getting 150-200fps more velocity with almost any ammo vs my 18” faxon barreled ar Grendel. Was very surprised to get 2550fps from the Hornady 123gn sst when I was only seeing just over 2400fps from my 18” ar15. Not to mention it’s so much quieter with my suppressor without all the gas blow back. Same amount of fire power similar lightweight but the ranch just seems more compact than even my 16” ar Grendel. I have 100 grain nosler bt handloads moving out 2720fps and shooting half moa. Although with a very similar load my 18” faxon match barreled ar15 shoots them sub half moa. Seriously 1 hole groups. I have on many occasions put 3 rounds into the same exact hole with the faxon. Groups literally look like a single .30 cal bullet hole. Never got that good with the ruger but for $350 + $289 primary arms 4-14x acss scope 1/2” moa is more than good with me. With any of the 20 off the shelf ammos I have it easily turns in 1.5 moa or better with some definitely shooting better.

Hunting rifle vids might not be popular but I would love a review of a Winchester Mod 70.

Cody Harring

Thanks for the review. My brother has this on the top of his list for a white tail deer rifle hunting in Carolinas. Keep telling him he needs to join up here. Will let him know it dropped and pushing to join for the always great nutnfancy reviews.

2026-09-15 18:00 I have the old OG gen 1.0, not 1.1 American ranch in .300Blk. I love it for around the property here in Kansas. However, I hate the flimsy rotary mag, it does not love to feed. Maybe I’ll put it up on gun broker and will look to the gen 2.

I have a gen 1 300 blk. Put a can on it of course because 300blk. And I also put mine in the magpul american stock with a sightmark wraith 4k mini. Excellent rifle!! And the stanag mags are great.

Savage Axis2 pro is looking good online anyway, lots of options for us south paws with it too. You’ve got me rethinking my next bolt gun, May go savage. Review that axis 2 pro as a comp if you haven’t already!

Thanks for the review nutn. Other reviewers praised its reliable feeding. But I feel the need to defend ruger in that your often unfairly critical of their copying other designs. EVERYONE copies. Frankly very few guns in the last 50 years can be called original. Ruger gets copied too. Look at all the 10/22 clones.

UncutDan

Perfect timing Nutn, I was looking at these new models as I have a gen 1 in 450 bushmaster (straight wall state) and I think I'll stick with it. It hasn't let me down once. I get about 1.5, 1.75 MOA at 100 with Hornady FTX.

Michael Szymborski

I picked up a American Predator in 400 legend for deer hunting in Ohio. I’m getting great groups at 50 yards! My only complaints are the hollow stock can be noisy. The forend of the stock is fairly flimsy and without much pressure can contact the barrel. I also wish it had QD sling mounts. Overall for the money I don’t think it can be beat!

DangOwoo

I recently picked up a gen 2 ranch in 556. I haven’t shot it yet but its purpose is a cheap ranch utility rifle.

Tacticaldoodle

Is this the one niche that hasn't been tackled by palmetto? The American series gets a lot of attention and sales, but the bolt actions are the only ones selling unopposed by big PSA

Love the wrist and knife check in the vids

Casey Jones

Thanks for the review Nutn. I requested this review a year ago, see DM’s. No I didn’t buy it, I waited for the review. Good thing I did, I decided over the course of the last year I didn’t need it, or as you said, it didn’t fit into any of my systems and I’ve already got 2 great hunting BA’s. Still a great looking gun though.

DudeDudeDude

Well at least when it comes to prototypes. They still do not have that 870 clone on the market do they?

DudeDudeDude

Yeah the stocks are not great but outside of that they are outstanding for the money paid.

DudeDudeDude

I do too. They should not put them on all models but it makes sense to make a few models with them.

Nathaniel Shelton

PSA just announced their bolt gun a couple days ago.

JFire

Good video Nutn. I’m currently debating on one either the Gen one and Gen2. I’ve rewatched all the Ruger American videos of all flavors to help me make a decision.

Rick Grad

I love shooting .22LR bolt rifles, Just something fun about running the bolt and getting little breaks between loading the mags. I don’t hunt, so the bigger caliber bolt guns never appealed to me as much as the semi auto 308s. I watch all the vids. because I just enjoy the content knowing I wouldn’t get one anyway.

Ben horton

Ruger American gen 2 compact in 6mm arc would be a great tactical bolt gun.

Ben horton

Just get the gen 2 unless you are getting a smoking deal on the gen 1. I have a heavy barrel hunter, gen 1. Great gun, has the RPR barrel, so a little heavy for hiking around with.

Ben horton

Wait!! Wtf happened to Wyatt?!?

wats.life68

Dang. And I bought a predator in .223 couple months ago. Been having a .223 bolt gun itch without dropping a grand or more on just the gun for years now. Spent about 600ish, plus vortex scope, plus magpul bipod, always working still hadn't shot it.. my first modern bolt gun hopefully she's a better one of the batch. But damn she just looks good and if I overspent for a sexy plinking bolt gun so be it.

TechNeck

I had issues with the gen 1 riffle as well. My .450 bushmaster was super handy and light, very accurate... but i didn't like fighting with the bolt. you really had to pull it straight or it would lockup with chambering rounds. When i saw you fighting to eject rounds you had me cringing... that means THERE IS A PROBLEM, like RIFLE GOES BOOM problem. either the head space is to tight or the ammo is not to spec (or both) having blown up a a rugger GUN site scout with this exact issue (firing federal GMM, cases were improperly trimmed at factory) ... if this happens ... stop shooting it immediately

Cory C

Tikka is the answer to bolt gun needs.

Willie Everett

I love these type of reviews. I have a Gen 1 American Predator in 308 and get sub moa with some ammo but other are around 1.5 moa. I did start getting better groups once I put it in the magpul stock...

Brievet

Another GRV loaded with truth! I’m interested in the CZ 600 Alpha. The bolt throw and controls felt very user-friendly in-store. This info on the latest American is helpful!

Not SAWC

I would say "tactical bolt guns" are still worth doing videos on. Since you discuss team dynamics in a WROL scenerio, having a team member with a bolt action rifle may still be a point to think about. Having someone who is a good shooter and has a capable firearm to reach out further with more accuracy in a team is valuable. In my mind, keeping the project up to date or inform new members on bolt action firearms is worth the time and effort.
