I have trusted a Christian based summer camp in northern Maryland 20 years ago and would do the same in 2025 at this particular camp. River Valley Ranch was a great place to send them for a week or two each year.

For us it is a solid maybe, lol. We always do research on such things before saying yes or no. Safety, past problems with staff, etc.. We wanted the kids to have wholesome experiences with friends but not if it compromised thier spiritual or physical safety.

Oh wow, good topic. My boys had a summer camp a few weeks ago, but I went with them.

I went to plenty growing up, I wouldn’t send my kids without a closely trust adult going or myself.

I have a 6 year old and a two month old and I was just pondering this ... looking forward to the video.

My girls out grew summer camp 25 years ago, but even back then I interviewed the head campers, reviewed the curriculum got references from those that had positive things to say and those that had negative things to say about the experience. If I am to entrust my daughters to some one , some place, some where and that takes them out of my guidance and protection, I gotta feel right about it.

My son is currently at a Christian summer camp for his first time at 15. I’ll let you know his AAR when he gets home Friday.

These days the way so many places fail to safeguard. I just don't know. It would be a tough sell if I had kids in that age range today.

Those rivers in Texas have flooded for years- I remember “evacuating” the Guadalupe in the family Winnebago in the middle of the night in the 80’s went my ww2 vet grandpa got off the cb and said it was time to go. Very tragic it has grown up so much there put youth in danger. Both my sons went to scout camp this summer. One is going to nation youth leadership training during turkey camp. The youth at summer camp build life long connections and get a touch of independence and responsibility in a safe place to fail. They went to Hood scout reservation and shot guns and bows, zip lines, ropes course, learned to canoe and sail boat, how to recover them from flipping in deep water and then tried to flip each other in order to recover. They had a blast. Camp medic was a national guard guy doing his yearly time and the gun range officer was an actual doctor. Had a lost camper drill and solid inclement weather plans.

My grandsons are currently in a survival camp outside of Denver, and loving it. They are so excited to go camping and show off their new skills.

I’m a father of girls. So the only way my kids would go is if I was a chaperone so that I could monitor the activities as well as the other adults running the camp. It’s hard to really trust anyone anymore.

JFire

I agree

I live an hour and half from where the flooding happened and my family has property down stream from where the flooding happened. Unfortunately flooding happens. Major floods have happened on the Guadalupe for years. Google “Texas flood of 98’”. Would I send my kids to a summer camp? Meh. I’ve never been much of a summer camp person. I can teach my kids what I think they need to know.

Absolutely. My wife and I each went to old school (1921, and 1902) rustic summer sleep away camps. Our son and twin daughters all go to a month of camp. My son also goes to one week of Boy Scout Camp with his Troop every year. I view sleep away camp as a necessary rite of passage - the more rustic the better. They need to learn to function on their own, to navigate socially, and be comfortable in the woods. Of course everyone is talking about Camp Mystic. We live in Atlanta and people still know people who lost children. It is very sad, but bad things can happen every day and it’s better that our kids have the experience and the opportunity to spread their wings.

I went to an overnight camp as a kid, I don't have any traumatic memories of it and I was a small odd kid. I also did what I believe was called Outward Bound, where at maybe 16 yrs old you are placed alone for 3 days 2 nights. I will aim to put my kids in that program. I would also love to see a video on the topic as my kids are both under 12 and I have a feeling they are not robust enough to enjoy themselves for an extended period in the great outdoors, rain or shine.

The perfect storm is an accurate description of events at and around Camp Mystic Texas. We live about 20 miles nirthwest if Kerrville Texas in ranch country. kerrville has a general population 22K, on July 4th, the population grows to over forty two K. Our home sits at 2108’ evevation and we have a dry creek bed on our property we drive over to reach the first road going to town. There is a small ravine beside the house where we placed small rocks grown in the pastures more as a way to get rid of them than water retention. The rock eagle is about two feet high and thirty five feet across. The Texas Hill country is hills, creeks, and lots of fields and pastures, very rural. The ground is rock with one to two inches of soil. When rains come, run off is fast and rapid. iPB for this storm was a complete failure. We know the terrain so the only variable is weather. The NWS did say the chance of rain was 100%. The storm system did bring rain, which mive thru rotate and return over and over for 24+ hours. We have a dry creek bed on the property we have to dry thru to reach the road and by mid morning this was fifteen feet deep and thirty feet wide. The second crossing we have to go over to reach the state highway Johnson Creek was twice this. BAD THINGS HAPPEN AT NIGHT. When the initial storm reports started coming in. Kerrville authorities activated there ERS program. This was quickly followed up by Gov Abbott releasing the states ready reserve ERS (emergency response system) allowing SAR and support agencies to move to the Kerrville area. Sadly Uncle Bubbles in Washington delayed releasing the reserve forces to support troops on the ground. People will say there should have been a EWS to alert authorities of the rising water. This storm was NOT a 100 year storm, it was mor like a 150 year storm.

I went to civil air patrol leadership encampment 4 or 5 times. Pararescue orientation twice. International air cadet exchange (IACE) once as well. Time very well spent. I’d encourage any teen to consider the CAP.
