This now out-of-production Benchmade Anthem 7981 was insanely priced! Its last price at BHQ was $446. I rail on this here or course, I can't help myself. For the price you would have passed up many great blades, even Microtechs. In the end I'll show some fave value knives (below).  Benchmade Mini Griptilian. http://shrsl.com/1pnac

Nah. For that price? Nuh uh.

Todd Strelka

I will never buy a knife that costs as much as a gun.

Justin Golden

Man, I'm tapped out for knives for a minute. Somebody talked me into buying this ludicrously large camo Boker auto knife that barely fits in my pocket...

Fred

I always wanted one and failed to keep tabs on when they were discontinued (for that sweet discount). I was sending my 1st gen presidio in to have the spring replaced and got to handle an anthem. At the time I was always carrying the Benchmade 761 Ti and I saw the anthem as an improvement over it due to the axis lock. Being fond of my presidio and all of the good OEF deployment memories with it, I saw the anthem as a cool hybrid of the 761 and presidio. I still want one but the prices have just become insane.

Clint Raby

Maybe if I win the lottery I'll spend that kind of money on a knife, but for now I'll stick with the value knives.

Brad Fegan

My benchmade mini Bugout and Spyderco Manix 2XL combined, didn't cost that much.

I think there's a goldilocks zone and it varies for everyone. I've owned some expensive knives. I find they bring me less joy than say, a Benchmade 943. I can use and enjoy a 943. Even if I use a $400+ knife I'm cringing, not enjoying it. At the same time, I don't get same fulfilment of ownership from a kershaw skyline as I do from the 943.

Moe Mansour

I'd love to get one of those. Love the camo pattern.. but Canada.

I handled the Manix 2XL at my LGS once without knowing what model it was. I was really impressed with it and how it felt in hand. Cool blade.

I dunno Nutn.. I think the herringbone penis clip is truly priceless. Jokes aside I daydreamed about the Anthem when I was researching my first Benchmade. Price was way out of my comfort zone. Ended up with the 943 and couldn’t be happier.

Moe Mansour

There's one in black and purple that blows me away.

Moe Mansour

You made an excellent choice, sir!

Mini grip all day long

Cyborg009

I kinda wish I had bought that because it was so beautiful. You really are releasing some oldies though, Nutn.

The Benchmade factory is 15 minutes from my house and I’ve always been a fan of their knives. I held the 781 and it’s a $200 max knife on a god day. It’s just not special enough to get into the $400 price point.

Greg Malcom

It is interesting to see what BM is doing. The knife is a hard no for me. I do buy two hundred dollar knives but that is my current limit. Also BM is anti-2A, I won't forget that. Thanks for the honest review Nutn!

DirtyPhil

Hey Nutn - how about some new Casio reviews - what is the protrek in this video and how about a review of their G-lide series? I have one and the new negative display is amazing! You haven’t reviewed a square watch ever as far as I can see….

BadgerTails

No, as noted above that's actually blue label Glock money. I DO have a BM Steigerwalt that I love, very bizzare design with a flipper dolphin tail, IIRC grabbed off E-slay for like $80 some years ago. I'd say also as Nutn mentions, at $200 on E-bay someday........maybe grab it, but E-bay has turned into a questionable place to buy/sell anything. As a former SuperBike/SuperTwins racer I do have an appreciation for Ti things and how they blow your mind on weight! Drive on!

William Goins

C'mon Nutn... Yes the Anthem is an expensive knife. But did you point out the handle is a single slab of milled titanium? Far tougher to make than two scales bolted together. And that the lock bar is integral to the scales? How about that the Axis system doesn't use the usual omega springs ; but, uses a coil spring cassette to power the Axis bar? You did mention that the blade is 20cv. The steel choice does add to the price of the Anthem instead of using Benchmade's standard steel of S30V. And finally, If you're going to compare one of Benchmade's most expensive knives to something else, is it really fair to compare the Anthem to lower cost Chinesium blades? How about comparing the Anthem to perhaps a Benchmade 940-1, a sprint run Spyderco PM2, or a MicroTech?

Tony B

I’d never buy the anthem, but for an integral handle knife, made from a single piece of titanium, and in the USA, that’s actually a good price. Milling a handle from a single piece of titanium is expensive. Look at spyderco’s nirvana, or Microtech’s ANAX. Both comparably priced but made overseas. I’ve seen them hold their value in forums too.

William Goins

As a follow up, your point that you can get a less expensive knife with good value for less money is duly noted!

Micah G

Thanks, nutn! I agree I would not buy either, better ways to spend 425.

Todd

I paid $333 for mine a few years ago It's now worth around $500+ I'm not selling it, go find an American made 🇺🇸 titanium integral for less ....I'll wait

Todd

I've seen Highpoints for $149

fishlanding

rather save for a Spyderco Endura Flat Ground 3.83" VG10 Damascus Plain Blade, Titanium Handles - C10TIPD @ 245 made in Japan ......

Tygre

I reckon a bad guy would be just as cut by a Spyderco Endura as he would by this thing.

maxmfs

Nut’n, you nailed it with your Sebenza comment, which this reminds me of. Even with a Sebenza, I would never buy it new. I picked up my Sebenza 25 on the secondary market. Also agree with your comments on the Ferrum Forge Crux, which the Anthem also reminds me of.

David Elkins

Blades have to be practical for me. And this one just isn’t very, especially at the price point.

Scott Nelson

I must say that this knife is very beautiful. However, the knives that I buy are more or less bought for use. I try to keep my knife purchases below the $200 window. So, beautiful knife - yes. Something I'll end up buying - no... Unless someone here wants to buy it for me? No? Well - can't say I didn't try.

Lorenzo

I wouldn’t buy it. The most I ever spent, and just a couple weeks ago, is at this same price point for my first Microtech blade. A Socom Alpha from BHQ.

Plumber Angelo

The price on these definitely went up. I remember seeing them in my local knife store a few years ago for like $300 ish? I thought it was too expensive then, but to see the price now? Yikes. Great review Nutn! KRV, KRV, KRV!!

Gilbert Cuzdey Jr

I haven't bought an infadel, phaeton, or microtec otf because of the price so I sure as heck wouldn't buy this. It's a 120-150 dollar knife.

Jesse (Sphinx)

For that price I’ll have a Microtech Combat Troodon—thanks! Or an extremely limited Gooseworks Arena, handmade by a former SEAL in his garage (who also has a pretty sweet watch company). Benchmade makes OK knives but just OK—I’ve sold everything BM I’ve ever tried, except my Bugout. Utility and 2nd cool just isn’t there on 90% of their models.
