Highly requested by TNPrs, here's my complete review of the Ruger SFAR AR10. It would seem Ruger had listened to my many complaints on regular AR10 SAWC violations! This SFAR gets it right: truly the size of an AR15 and sub 7 pounds! This is exactly the type of AR10 I have been asking the industry to make for over 15 years! The American Rifleman article below talks to exactly how Ruger did this.  I suspect they used the 6.8 lb POF Revolution as inspiration.

But this lightweight and small form factor "don't mean crap if the dog don't hunt." Here you'll see it "hunt." In a first ever, TNP crew and I ran this this Gunnies-loaned Ruger 16" SFAR in different and distant locations.  The gun squared off with the curse of the desert and also managed to dodge flying rounds at Sean's location (shown, discussed, a rant!). This Nutnfancy GRV delivers my independent data on build quality, features, ergos, POU, AR15/AR10 replacement, ammo weight, accuracy, value, reliability, and predictions for the future of AR10s.

And in another first, you'll see some of the TNP Donor comments scrolling during the outro as more shooting continues. These elite dudes helped facilitate this and every other review and philosophy video you see in the Project!  So here's another fun, touchstone TNP GRV proving again the best days are still ahead. With your continued, long term support TNP continues to thrive and serve the needs of good dudes just like you...thank you!

Thanks! Are you still going to post the G48 update with S15 mags (mentioned in the iisa G26 vid)?

Robert

Will watch ASAP! My understanding of the design is that Ruger licensed the DPMS G2 platform from Palmetto State Armory, who now owns it. Maybe PSA will release one, too?

The Nutnfancy Project

Yes, I think I've done it but it just has been edited...let me check...yep it's done. You want that to be next gun review?

Todd Strelka

Hey, Nutn. I'm watching this video now. Wow, I'm impressed! I checked it out on Ruger's website the other day after your preview video. This is the first AR10 platform rifle I've seriously considered since the proven Smith & Wesson M&P 10. Now I'm leaning towards the Ruger SFAR. It's not in my budget yet since I just had to replace the roof on my house, but it's on my short list of guns I need. The other one I need from Ruger is the LCPII in .380. Thank you for your hard work and this awesome review!

BilboCarter

This is super cool!!!! I love my Aero A5 build from 8-9 years ago, but it's definitely in need of a diet. Love the .308 battle rifle though.

JARMYSTRONG

$1,129's not bad, could probably be had for less from a non big box retailer. I paid $899 from Turner's in 2020 for my SW MP10 - and while it's hefty - I don't think the hassle of selling it and paying more for the SFAR plus 308 ammo costs justifies the change.

maxmfs

Thanks a lot Nut’n. Here we go again. One minute I’m happy with my M4 and M1A, not planning any immediate rifle purchases, then you go and drop this. “Nope, nope, nope,” I say. Then I start thinking, “Well I do have that extra MRO laying about…” So yeah, thanks a lot Nut’n. But seriously, great review (so far). Thanks for all you do, and keep up the good work.

Justin Wingerter

Love to see it! Need something new that is a light weight option!

The Nutnfancy Project

" Love the .308 battle rifle" Me too. Thanks for your comment and support BilboC!

The Nutnfancy Project

" I don't think the hassle of selling it and paying more for the SFAR plus 308 ammo costs justifies the change. " Agree! That's how I see it too, my M&P10s are staying.

David Gaines

So pumped for this! SAPRs make bolt actions obsolete unless hunting or shooting over 700 yards (which no one shots past anyway). Change my mind

The Nutnfancy Project

Thanks maxmfs. It's tempting to jump on something like this but let the thought percolate for awhile; the guns you have are still awesome. Only if you need a high mobility SAPR consider this one.

Justin Wingerter

This rifle will probably be my first entry into the .308 cartridge! Thanks in advance nutn for the evil eye I will get from my woman!

Cyborg009

Very interesting. I think I am going to let Ruger keep perfecting the QC for another year or so.

Aaron Carrington

Two rifle GRV’s in a row!!! It’s Christmas time in May! I still say you need to give the Sig 716i its own GRV.

Brian Carter

This looks awesome! I live in a less than free state (WA) so I likely won’t be adding this one soon, but it’s good to see a company pulling this off. Swap out the barrel & muzzle for an 18” precision w flash hider & comp and this could be a GREAT battle rifle!

James Young

What a great improvement over traditional AR10s. Definitely going to keep this rifle in mind for adding in the future. I also love that you're trying Primary Arms optics since they make the best non-Trijicon lightweight prisms and they make some great scopes.

BadgerTails

AV-8! AV-8! AV-8! Keeping my AR-10T, I''l wait for the FOMO prices to come down, maybe...

Guy Actual

The SFAR is a Fabulous firearm. I have had the pleasure to shoot a few, and they all have functioned without issue.

Hold Fast Joe

I would love to see a pof 308 comparison! Their heat sink idea is wonderful I wish Ruger could've licensed it for use in this sfar. Great review, thanks

Patrick Brichta

Dude! Awesome review, I'm still thrilled with my PSA Gen III. If I need another 308 BR then I may head this way. BTW, I looked for the review of the Primary Arms SLX 3x, I couldn't find it. I have th 1x, and love it, been thinking of grabbing the 3x, but learning from past advice, wait until you've reviewed it! HAHA!

Outrider950

I would really like PA to release that 3x in a Gold or Platinum series. Possibly with the ret on the GLX 2x. The clarity on the GLX is definitely noticeable. I have a few on the 3x variant and always find myself migrating back to the 2x for FOV, ret….and the clarity. Darn these old eyes.

Rob Miller

Great review. Thank you for your work.

Downtrodden

This video is convincing me to go with the Primary Arms SLX 3x for my SFARt. Thanks for fast tracking this review!

kylenor

Sick rifle. I love the fact that they got rid of some of the pic rail to save weight. I agree it would be super cool if they do a LW version and delete the forward assist. Awesome content as always! Thanks

JIMY

When I say this might be the Nutnfancy review I’ve been looking forward to most, I think I mean it. This is great content! I was on a waiting list for one for months and I finally picked mine up last week. I’m pumped. Taking it out tomorrow. Keep up the great reviews!

JIMY

Awesome opening btw!

Nate Berglund

Feature Length!! I have been considering getting into the AR10 platform and this rifle might be on my short list of candidates. Thanks Nutn!

Colin

Its funny you mention that GECO ammo, I bought a few boxes of 9mm of the same brand at the beginning of covid and I couldn't get that stuff to run reliably in anything I tried it in. Light primer strike after light primer strike, no failure to feeds or extract just wouldn't go bang.

DuginIN

Good for Ruger. Lightweight reliable AR10 at a reasonable price. I think competition is coming. PSA, S&W and Sig. I’ll be patient to see before I buy.

Matthew Hargis

Great review. You have tempted me with wanting this rifle. Thanks Nutn -Sharkey

Another dumb civilian

Being an owner of a POF revolution DI pistol 12.5in version. This type of system is amazing. I was really hoping you would run this suppressed to see how it would do. I’m also curious if a POF and SFAR lowers are interchangeable

The Nutnfancy Project

You are welcome! You have chose well with that sight, it is totally awesome. I'm keeping it on the SFAR too, probably so more vids on it.

The Nutnfancy Project

Hello Kyle, thank for weighing in and you bet. I think you'll see a LW version and it will again excite the market.

The Nutnfancy Project

Thank you Jimy, please let us know how yours' shoots. I am seeking more accuracy data too.

Bluegill097

Great table top! I will be in the market for a SAPR soon, should I pounce on a 308 or wait it out for 6.5 Creed now that the military is adopting it? 1-2 years before I'll have the funds for purchase.

JIMY

Check your inbox for a range report.

David Elkins

A GTW AR simply must have a forward assist. To say it doesn’t is just wrong. 3 gun competition or plinker? Nah. But GTW? Absolutely’imo.

Jonathon Hurley

The question I always come to with these special sized guns (read not standard) and special bolts and stuff is can you get spare parts easily for them? I know for a fact that I can get spare parts for my PA-10 without much difficulty and without a crazy cost.

Hold Fast Joe

If you could post the report in community section I'm sure many of us would appreciate it! Especially your results on paper at various ranges

JIMY

Good call. Just posted it.

DudeDudeDude

I think I may pick one of these up within a year or so. I always wanted an ar10 but every time I handled one the weight turned me off.

rjw

Seems like a pretty cool rifle. Im just surprised nobody noticed the hammer pin walking out. Prob not the rifles fault but its sticking out pretty far.

Shawn Kuse

I do not own either an AR15 nor an A10, but I enjoy Nutn's take on them. Being a city dweller, an AR platform is really not ideal. But how I love the vids! Yes, I am former military and fired plenty of M16's in my time. I love the platform, ease of use, and modularity of the weapon.

Jbocajs .

Looks like a sweet rifle, I have no plans on selling my personally built Aero M5.

Andrettski

Sweet rifle, I've never shot an AR10, would love it I'm sure but it is a caliber that I have no mags or stashed up ammo for it. I'm in WA state with the mag ban which has put the cuffs on my bucket list gun buys.

Andrettski

That is one nice AV-8 watch Nutn, I don't think I've seen that one before. Thanks for the great GRV. Thanks to Sean and Wyatt.

Andrettski

All my AR builds are Aero M4's, wish I could do an M5. Curious what does your's weigh?

Joshua S

For zombunist containment. Got it. Sign me up.

Price watch TNPers: Sportsman's Outdoor superstore just listed the 16 and 20 " @ $999, in stock as of 1010 today CST, 18MAY23

If you have money to spend. The POF rouge is a good option. It’s around 6.8 pounds. It is DI. 16inch. Stainless barrel. I have never had a failure to feed. A little pricey at 1700-1900. Micro comp, comes with it. I would change it. I have one and the ruger.

Joshua S

The music at the end took me back to your videos from 5 years ago. You've been rock solid and consistent. Thank you for years of outstanding content!

ThisWe'llDefend

I have the POF Rogue. Pretty similar accuracy results to your SFAR, but I've only tried 3 different ammo mfg's so far. Hopefully I'll be able to find something this summer that will take it to sub 2 moa. I bought it for hog hunting and it works great for that. If I find a more accurate hunting load it likes then it may end up standing in for my Remington 700 this dear season.

Erik

Love the end of the video segment. the comments, music, and extra gun footage. 👍🇺🇸

TechNeck

In canada we have always had a plethora of semi .308 rifles due to no import bans like the US. So i never really had a desire for an ar10 platform. This one defenitatly has me intrested. Unforchantly our tyranical left gov has banned them, and look to be banning all semi auto gun in canada in the next couple weeks. (It starts with a sale ban... then they will ban models one by one in our FTR system and have them turned in and destroyed so as not to enrage all the gun owners all at once)

OldBloodanGuts

I have a POF Revolution 308. I like the gun but the accuracy is about the same as the Ruger. However, I have not shot match ammo out of it yet.

2026-09-15 18:00 No idea why nutn used the rev as comparison instead of the rogue. The rogue is 5.9 pounds (a pound lighter than the ruger) and just a few hundred dollars more with a better barrel and trigger.

I’m an FFL. I ordered in a brand new SFAR from my wholesale distributor. When I opened the box, the trigger pins would rotate dramatically, and the fire selector didn’t work at all. The selector rotated 360° and wouldn’t click into place on the safe or fire mode. I figured it was maybe missing a safety spring. It was not missing a safety spring, it was literally just an out of spec fire selector switch. I installed an Anderson Mfg fire selector and it worked fine after that. Needless to say, I was highly disappointed with Ruger because of this. For the price, I also would have expected this rifle to have a 4150 barrel 😕

Joseph

Would you take the roughly one pound weight savings? Or build a on sale and some blem parts PSA AR10 for half as much? $650. And the PA10 does come with an adjustable gas block. The AR10 really isn’t a great man portable long distance walking gun to begin with. A 5.56 gun would be preferred, mainly due to the ammo being way lighter and smaller. Yes the AR10 can be carried in a squad, but it is limited on ammo For this price difference, is it worth it, as a secondary system?

Gabriel Wall

Where in the world is it only a “few hundred dollars more” the best price for the Rogue anywhere that I can find is literally $1000 more than the SFAR. Not a competitive option in terms of price point.
