Don't shoot the messenger...I'm here to help!  Yes your ROL lighting system is probably pretty awesome by now. But here, in this feature length prep video, is focused elsewhere. Here we consider loss of the entire electrical grid for at least 30 days. How will your system fare now?

This is not an all inclusive video of every situation and every possible lighting solution; that would be a 4 hr video! Instead I'll focus on options I have personally used and know that they work.  We'll start small and talk about the efficacy of each one. Then the corner stone of the video will be introduced for de-sucking your PLS.  Another fun systems video brought to by donors of TNP.

Your Preparedness Lighting System Sucks

I think we are WROL with Biden in the White House.

Truth darts!!!! Interesting I've always thought of lighting systems to get by for about a week, or in the woods....but when you start talking about 30days.....yes, my lighting system sucks.....time to do something about that.

Brian Driver

I have flashlights and extra batteries. Also candles, and unused solar lights, and kerosene lamps. The solar lights worked great during the last several day power outages during the hurricane aftermath.

Sajak

Great info-tainment as always Nutn. There are so many systems, I think a cool video idea would be, if you were just starting your preparedness journey and you had nothing, where would you start spending your money and how would you build everything up. This info is distributed throughout the project to some extent but I’d still be curious to know your thoughts

Moe Mansour

Right now we're being warned to prepare for blackouts in Canada do to the lib gov's new electricity legislation to cut emissions. Although, in Alberta, the premier is pushing back against unconstitutional federal laws like this with a provincial sovereignty act. But I've been stocking up. I got that same little candle lantern. It's great for camping too since they make citronella candles for it (keep the bugs away).

Rob Miller

Thanks, I needed this. Will watch tonight or after I finish my shooting competition tomorrow. OK-watched it. Shooting comp went OKish nowhere near first place. I was much better off than I thought- Forgot to include 3 generations of Coleman Lanterns and the fuel on hand we used for Scouts. Tons of candles, etc. I did order the Geneverse Bundle to plug a big hole. What's not to like about renewable quiet and clean power. Beats messing with a generator and filling fuel in the middle of the night.

Steven Salina

I'm just happy I finally went out and bought a duel fuel 2000 watt generator and have a couple power banks to assist with other power needs.

WallBreaker37

I LOVE these preparedness vids Nutn. Keep them coming!!!

The Nutnfancy Project

You got a great start there Brian. I would add in solar generators as discussed if you can. They're $$ but worth it.

The Nutnfancy Project

Another great idea and I will mull it over. Getting prepped up is an overwhelming topic really and doing it right usually means a lot of money spent. There are cheap ways to do things too fi you can settle. For instance you can live off rice and beans! Millions in the world do.

Jeremy Bell

I know I'm in the minority, but here's my vote for more prepping videos. I'm burnt out on youtube gun reviews honestly. I have all the guns that I want. Thanks for the vid!

Matthew Sinn

Lots of great things to think about. I've been planning on picking up a couple of Jackery solar gens for a couple of years. Might just have the kick in the butt I needed to actually prioritize it.

Robert Avery

Looking forward to this one. Excited topic

Mr. Bill

Living in rural NE has helped get us prepared. Ice storms knock the power out for 4-5 days every year, sometimes 2-3 times a winter. This year's flooding had us stuck at home for 3-4 days, 2 days without power. Candles, propane lanterns (cheap, easy to store tanks and no mess), Mr.Buddy heater and a generator sparingly (never know how long the power will be out)to run the freezer and charge batteries and phones. I have a car jumper pack that will run wifi and a computer just to keep the boredom down. Pro tip: Point your flashlights up rather than forward to light a room.

TechNeck

I have a metric FT of AA batteries. All my flashlights use AA. I have 500 tee candles and a latern as a back up. I do have a 10k genset, its my welder, its its own trade value for gas in long term in what i can do with it. It will last thousands of hours maintinace wise with only oil changs and spark plugs... which i have enough spares at all time to make 1200 hrs of run time.

Bryan Palmer

Nutn is 100% responsible for my olight addiction. And I am grateful!! 😆

Greg

When sun sets bring those garden solar lights inside. Carry in your hand as a torch, or drop in a pre-drilled 2x4 and use as a lamp. When sun rises, stick them back in the garden. Not much brighter than a candle, but free and they work forever.

Robert Fuller

Nutn, I paired rechargeable flashlight batteries w/ LED bulbs. I also have rechargeable 3ft. LED shop lites for indoor use. Working on installing a small solar system.

DudeDudeDude

I have lanterns. I actually use a coleman propane lantern sometimes but I probably should go to a dual fuel for better flexibility and being able to get fuel in an emergency. I also have a kerosene lantern for emergency use as well.

DudeDudeDude

I use propane lanterns somewhat regularly although I should probably switch to dual fuel. I also have a kerosene lantern like yours I keep for emergencies. Also, do not overlook your woman's yankee candles. Those things last a long time and smell good to boot. Also, those that have RVs, boats, or tractors you can keep their tanks topped off to have a fuel reserve.

DudeDudeDude

In the video you ask folks to subscribe to the B channel but call it The Nutnfancy Project. Isn't the B channel Lt Col Nutnfancy?

Paul Griech

it’s called the bio lite solar home 620

After Brandon/Obammie 2.0 let that balloon traverse the whole country viewing where all our grid installations are at worries me that an EMP maybe in our near future. We also could have a CMP at any moment, the Sun has been very active lately and we're way past due. Buckle-up, stay strapped and well lit.

Charles New

If your storing fuel long term,( longer than 6 months ) make sure it is non-ethanol.

david rockwell

A cogent and timely discussion. The expansive overview was enjoyable and informative. During video, I verified my stored battery systems; inspection revealed two in near depleted state of charge. The Tough Light LED lantern is a quality product. Thank you for continued dedication and effort.

It was just a mention at the end, but I picked up the Armourlite Field Watch (white dial rubber strap) after the review earlier this year and I absolutely love it! Fantastic watch. Keeps time well, light enough, thin enough, handsome enough, and the most legible watch I own. Day or night, glasses on or off. With my eyes I have a hard time reading the date, but not a big issue for me. I've got several other watches and aside from the one I wear to work (home remodeling) none of them get much time on the wrist now. My opinion, buy this watch.

Jon Pease

Yep, love the prep vids. My wallet doesn't. Either I'll be happy I have it or my kids will wonder if I was crazy, of course they already think I am a Nut!

Joey

I love the preparedness videos! Thank you nutn!

Scout154

We need more prep videos and I make sure my payments are good to go!

Mardy Stevens

Love my Olights. Going to get my Marauder Mini with the Christmas sales coming up. I always drop a couple Benjamins on the Olight Christmas sales. I have an OUPES 1800 solar generator and that thing still at full charge after 6 months. I have noticed the solar generator companies tend to have sales quite often. I have a dual fuel generator also. I think the dual fuel option is awesome as I can use gasoline or propane. Propane can keep forever also.

Re: Solar Generators. Lithium Ion has a lot of problems. They can run hot and catch fire and have storage that's better then Lead Acid batteries. However, the current state of the art is Lithium Ion Phosphate (lifpo4) batteries. They can cycle 90 times and retain 80%of their charge. The only problem is they cannot be charged in the cold. This ruins that great life cycle you paid for. They must be heated to room temp about 60°. Because of this defect, many lipo4 batteries in largest sizes have heating pads. They heat the unit first then run as usual. A 100 amp lead acid battery only gives you 50 usable amps and then they power down gradually. Lifpo4 batteries can run at full 99% if rated amps until you have used 95% and unlike the gradual drop off of other batteries you have a flat line at 99% then drops off like cliff. They also weigh 50% of lead acid batteries with the same amperage. This is a cusery review of why I like lifepo4 batteries the Internet has all the details. There is coming a gen lipo4 that is half the size and weight in a couple years.

Todd

I have a Pecron E2000LFP probably the best overall price to performance sogen I have over 1200 watts of panels to power it I can and I have used it to run a full size fridge, Instant Pot, hot water kettle and an air fryer ( of course not all at once but individually. I picked up a EB3000 battery extension for $1154 when they were on sale with a discount code.

Another excellent video which revealed gaps in my "lights out" system, specifically redundancy and the need for a power source between small battery power banks and my gas generator. Please keep the outstanding content going. It helps me to SUCKLESS.

Jesse (Sphinx)

I've got so many candles...so many kerosense lanterns (and kerosene, spare wicks), and LED lanterns (some are solar powered), and batteries, and 2x Jackery battery packs. Recently sold my camper trailer with 200W solar system and 100AH battery, and need to replace that capacity. Also recently build a carport with a 700 foot^2 south facing roof which was calculated to hold 12KW of solar panels...so I'm working on a better lighting system but have to build as funds are available.

fidelity

After watching this video I decided to update my systems. I had been waiting on buying portable solar for a long while due to low quality assurance and durability of chinese suppliers. With that said, I found a new company called Elecom Nestout, which has an interesting story as a Japanese made consumer products company that has just come to the US in the last few weeks (seriously, look on youtube, almost no English reviews). It advertises as high durability, and has mil-style aspects. I got their solar panel, 15000 battery, and their lamp for about $200 via amazon. Used it yesterday and the lamp works great as a flood light, the solar panel worked fine in direct light. Girlfriend liked it. Enough light to do dishes and live comfy presuming I can get a full charge by day. It's my hope this is highly durable, and for that I'm banking on Japanese-made. It does have a few small drawbacks, like the plastic component of how the light attaches could be brittle in extreme cold weather (but your batteries will suck too, so), and it's possible to cross thread the light attachment if you're being a doofus. Not suggesting this is like a combat solar rig, but a reasonable home backup system. So far it seems like a really high quality product, and while it's only $200ish right now, it will probably jump in price when they realize it could sell at $300-$350.

Kinoons

You can count me as one of the crazy ones with a solar farm. 30 panels on the roof and a 10kw backup battery. Keeps two rooms of lights, the fridge, and my internet powered up. I also have a goal zero yeti 400 and a yeti 50 to charge with a portable pannel when traveling is needed. One thing I have found useful are the ryobi lighting products. I keep a 6 bay ryobi charger plugged in where it will always get power and when teamed up with some ryobi puck lights and lanterns I will always have light on top of my couple of fenix and olight products. Also keeps the ryobi power tools as a viable option when the power is out. Ryobi also has a few small converters to AC and USB ports to charge other small electronics from their batteries. I’ve also considered how a portable panel and small solar generator could be used to barter. I can charge your phone/light/tablet, let’s trade.

Josiah Pierce

i feel like i’ve watched this video 3 or 4 times. i love your core philosophy videos like these because you are having fun and share real life, practical thing and the comedy alone makes these kinds of vids so rewatchable. keep the good times rollin Nutn!

Rob Miller

3 days without power in NC. Made it through pretty good. Started getting a little annoying though. A month would be tough. I watched this video when it posted and it helped me greatly. Because I upgraded back then.
