Speaking as someone who went to Chuck E Cheese's as a kid and teenager, and then someone who took my own kids to the new bright ball-pit-less incarnation... I have to admit that I like the newer one. It's very open, without dark corners, and I never lost sight of my kids. But I did miss the animatronics. My kids paid zero attention to the Rat on the Screen.

Gave this a other watch but wanted to add something that I remembered during the rewatch. Back in the late 90's early 00's I worked for a children's theater troupe and we would go to several hundred chuck e cheeses up and down the east coast for a multi year period. I distinctly remember seeing some of more ... Experimental... characters on the list. But what was really fascinating were the handful of really old (even by standard of the time) locations that had some interesting hybrids from the showbiz / chuck e cheese brand standardization. Youd get Looney Bird hanging out with Jasper Jowels, or the sun and moon still there in the set dressing along with the (definitely not the Rock-a-Fire Explosion) Chuck Gang. Idk why I find this wild brand so fascinating but it goes to so many incredible places. Especially when the brand standardization gets a bit dicey in their more remote / poorly maintained franchise locations 😂😂😂

Fun (?) fact, the Florin Mall store got a slight mention in the video, that was my local Chuck E Cheese growing up. That store would later be turned into the Good Guys electronics store in the mid/late 80s, and later it would be get held hostage and shot up in 1991. I think it was one of the largest hostage takings ever at the time. My mom worked at the mall at the time, and she got evacuated and everything. It was insane.

I fondly remember birthday parties at Chuck E Cheese growing up and don't care as much about the history but am just endlessly fascinated by the people who keep up the lore, documentation, and wiki pages, etc of these nostalgia brands. Love them for it (and you Mr. Defunctland) because it is always just pure entertainment

This was such a a great video. So many memories. I do feel like Pasquale should have gotten an updated ranking. Like the OG one was marquee but you didn't really revisit him the way you did with the other main characters. Also I agree the new chuck E is terrible

omg i grew up around fairfield OH and used to go to jungle jims all the time. (i still do every time i visit home, its so fun) I always referred to the king as the elvis monkey and never knew what it was from until watching this video. my mind is blown!! lol

Yeah we used to go a lot a year or so ago and kids not only don’t care about the digital rat but they don’t even seem to give a shit about the costumed one anymore. It doesn’t help that they bring him out with no fanfare most of the time.
