Andrew Mathis (@ThamesDarwin), Professor at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, joins us this week, to discuss the German SDP all the way back to the late 19th century.  The creation and structure of the SDP and Bismarck's bannig of them in response to their power. How Germany's imperialism and relationship with violence played into socialism pre- and post-WW1. How the SDP transitioned from an underground period following WW2 and played into the emerging party politics and global third way at the end of the 20th century.

I really like how comprehensive yet "compact" this analysis was. I'm Austrian and always struggle to tell the history of Central European socialism in a nutshell. Sometimes I feel that those looking in from the outside are much better equipped to get to the bottom of a historical issue than natives, who have to avoid getting sidetracked by cultural idiosyncracies as well as the influence of collective / personal memories on their analyses. Thanks very much for the great talk!
