W. E. B. Du Bois was one of the great American thinkers. He was one of the co-founders of the NAACP and served as the editor of its "Crisis" magazine for years. Always progressive, W.E.B. made an effort to promote socialism toward the end of his life, a difficult commitment during the government crackdown on socialists during that time. But Du Bois was unfettered eventually joining the CPUSA.

In this talk, Du Bois talks about the international struggle for socialism, the differences between socialism and social democracy, and class warfare.

W.E.B. DuBois Speaks! Socialism and the American Negro (Full)

W.E.B. DuBois Speaks! Socialism and the American Negro. The venerable W. E. B. DuBois (1868-1963), historian and activist, gives an address to the Wisconsin Socialist Club in Madison on socialism and the struggle of Black people in America. This speech was given on April 9, 1960 when DuBois was over 90 years of age and just months before his removal to Africa where he died Ghana on August 27, 1963 at the age of 95. In the speech Du Bois asserts that African Americans must learn the truth about socialism that they may "preserve their culture, get rid of poverty, ignorance and disease, and help America live up at least to a shadow of its vain boast as the land of the free and the home of the brave."

The artwork is really nice. I'm not familiar with any of these paintings and can't seem to find them anywhere.

Great vid. Thanks for posting. I'm hearing some real praise of the USSR and China. As a newly radicalized socialist I'm trying to figure out if the USSR and China were great project or if Stalin and Mao killed hundreds of millions of their own people. Or if there's some middle ground between both side's propaganda. I'd like to hear what the crew thinks on this matter

An interesting historical document. Think it's worthwhile to contrast this with Steinbeck and Capa's "Russian Journal" which is roughly contemporaneous and a lot more clear-eyed about the conditions within the Soviet Union at the time. e.g. even Krushev's 1956 denunciation of Stalin adds some useful perspective about what was actually happening. With respect to DuBois's critique of capitalism and his championing of democratic decision making, he is more clear-eyed.

Du Bois thought government was the necessary vehicle for socialism, only then can it succeed. This is not quite right, and the reason why it is not correct has to do with why after seeing capitalism undergo successive crises we still have capitalism. No government can force socialism on us, we must force socialism on our government. This is why it is taking so long, and will likely take a lot longer. At the very least a sizeable majority of the population supporting socialism is necessary for a government to run a stable social democracy. Capitalism does not need the support of an ideological majority, because capitalism has such a weak (nonexistent?) spiritual and philosophical basis it can be supported by any number of idiots with either good or terrible motives and delinquent sense of common humanity.

...and in the USA a lot of people need to wake up and realize they are actually, at heart, socialists. I am not sure the government is the best way to get these folks (the unknowing socialists) woken up. The effort to wake people up is quite urgent, and I think there is no one best way, it needs to be on all fronts, in all our relations, at all times, whenever there is an opening to deepen people in their own intrinsic spiritual condition, the condition of having compassion and love for the entire human race.
