Journalist Soumya Shankar (@shankarmya) joins us to discuss Tulsi Gabbard and her piece in The Intercept, "Tulsi Gabbard Is Rising Star, Despite Hindu Nationalist Support." Tulsi's troubling relationship with Modi'snationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP. Tulsi's donor support from Hindu nationalists, Tulsi as "Modi's warrior in America." Tulsi's extremely mixed and hard to pin down foreign policy stances. (Note: since this recording, Tulsi did tweet in opposition to US meddling in Venezuela.)

Thanks for the support, Patrons!

Nice intro music MB. You will always have a special place in my heart for introducing this rocky mountain white boy to NAS.

We need to hear more from India and other population centers that will be more affected by climate change. As committed humanists how can we advocate that it is our obligation to allow in refugees? Is that even a point we should be trying to make. It feels to soon politically but that only because capitalism is a 300 ton sea anchor we need to cut off to solve this problem together as humans. There has never been anything like what is facing us 200 years down the pipe line. I wish I knew how this would turn out but that is what should drive us to make it a conquest of the collective human spirit to overcome our past.

Nice reading our comments phiberoptik. :-) Just objectively in the USA there is far more infrastructure for working people to thrive on, even under the yolk of market neoliberalism, so immigrants are almost always (and definitively on average) going to be a net economic advantage and without taking jobs away from current workers. People who argue otherwise are xenophobic dog whistling for white supremacy I'd argue. Plus, supposing a Federal Job Guarantee program is instituted, then immigrants are even more beneficial for the USA, up to the ability of the underlying natural resources to sustain the rise in population. Currently the USA has plenty of natural resources, and they'd be even more sustainably used under a Green New Deal program. So the hard cold economic facts support a moderate increase in immigration and easily can support several thousand more refugees per year. Perhaps a hundred thousand or more, easy, no stress, no pressure on natural resources (which the wealthy exploit and abuse per capital far more than poor immigrants). As for moral reasons, I'd argue they go without question, of course the USA should allow in more immigrants on grounds of supporting human dignity and freedom from oppression, regardless of the downsides (which I find hard to find, honestly --- the main downside of current waves of immigration and refugee immigration in particular is that most(?) of those people if they had a choice would probably not want to leave their home country, they seek work in the USA largely out of desperation). Just my 2 cents worth.

Comrades, keep a look out for Mike from Humanist Report. He claims to have tee'd up an interview with Gabbard, and he seems clued-up on all her flaws. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0se1Xcw8Ks He did not give a date, but it sounded like it could be quite soon. Unlike Harris, who has not apologized one bit for her past far right wing policies on criminal justice, Gabbard has at least walked back and disowned her past stance on LGBTQ rights.

Another thing that's incredibly bizarre is how Tulsi's Hare Krishna cult she grew up with led her later to have militaristic sympathies as well as the right wing nationalist sympathies. Can someone square that circle? I know a lot about comparative religion, and the Hare Krishna people generally have always seemed peaceful and non-violent to a fault (apart from some hare krishna groups involved with child abuse and brain-washing). It's all a bizarre mix with Tulsi.
