Adom Getachew (@AdomGetachew), a political theorist focused on empire, decolonization, and author joins us this weekend to discuss her book, "Worldmaking after Empire: The Rise and Fall of Self-Determination." Jamaica's Michael Manley and the shift from the East-West Cold War divide to the North-South divide. The attempt at an "internationalization of the welfare state." The importance of removing the protective barriers of the North Atlantic states.

This one was great - one of my faves! Can't wait to hear more from her

What I'd really like to know is why people like Manley did not vigorously resist IMF and WB restructuring? Looking back with hindsight I know I, for one (if I were in Manley's position in the 80's) would fight IMF austerity/restructuring to the death, no compromise. So why back then did so many people just swallow the neoclassical economics kool-aid? The lefties backing Bernie and Corbyn had really better tackle some serious modern heterodox and post-Keynesian economic reality and not ever again bow to the economic and financial warfare waged by the elite and established global financial hegemonic players. I think people do not really understand how important a guy like Varoufakis is in all this, not just for Greece. He seems to grasp what a lot of the Bernie economic advisor have not quite cottoned onto, which is that with a sovereign currency you do not need to play the IMF's game. If Syriza had done what Varoufakis suggested and ditched the euro as their plan B, it would have been a major shock-wave. I hope there is a similar but more successful attempt to revolt against the IMF in some other nation in the Global South soon. Gotta get this ball rolling fighting neoliberalism and financial neocolonialism all round the world.
