For Dmitri: aside from redistributing wealth (if the rich are taxed at higher rates) taxes also make currency more valuable. Capitalists should know that, but they don't appear to. Tell the "Betsy de Vos" in your civics class that she cannot pay her taxes in the form of yachts or diamonds.

@1:04:00 "Harris wants to be the science guy..." I think is true and also profoundly messed up. It is a common prejudice in our culture, I think, that scientists are all logic nerds and materialists. I think surveys have shown half of scientists have some sort of religious or spiritualistic metaphysical beliefs. Particularly strong in professional mathematicians is a belief in some variety of (mathematical)Platonism - that we are discovering truths about numbers and geometries, not inventing them as socially constructed fictions. (For what it's worth, I think the mathematicians are [almost clearly objectively] right about this limited form of platonism). So I think what is also very disturbing about a chap like Sam Harris is that he is sometimes held up as some sort of priest for atheist scientism, along with his deeply flawed ideas that moral aughts can be derived from science, logic and empiricism. To be quite blunt: he does not represent a mainstream science opinion, most scientists have either boring or weird personal beliefs, but the vast majority, when sane and not intoxicated, are (when pressed hard) agnostic on metaphysics (which you kinda have to be as a professional scientist because materialism is your bread & butter but only within the bounds of science - and science has pretty clear boundaries). As a mathematician and scientist myself, I get quite riled when dumb-dumb atheists and leftie materialists portray Harris as some sort of science nerd archetype. By any fair analysis I think you'd have to put Harris in the lunatic fringe of pseudo-science quacks. He probably has much more credibility on the topic of benefits of meditation, once you cut away the physicalist-atheist prejudices he has. (Meditation is not only about healthy neurology, it involves one's connection with the whole world, with others, with mental abstractions such as spiritual virtues, with thoughts about putting such virtues into material actions, it cannot be reduced to neurology.)

Also, sheeeshhh... race and IQ stuff is NOT SCIENCE. There is no theoretical model behind any of it that is testable. Stop saying that it is "science". To recall Chomsky on postmodernism, I'm pretty sure race + IQ theorising is on a par with postmodernism theory, i.e., total crap. This should be contrasted with scientific research on the effects associated with IQ testing, such as work by James Flynn and Eric Turkheimer. I would liken this to sociology of fairies and unicorns --- there is no scientific framework behind such magical creatures, but there is scientific study, or anthropology, of the subcultures of people who believe in such things.
