Ben Burgis (@BenBurgis) joins us to debunk Joe Biden's healthcare lies. Michael meets Sam Nunberg. Samantha Bee is not good. Cardi B is great. Is there a role for anger in political movements? Jeremy Corbyn calls for solidarity with Lula. And as always we take your calls and IMs.

So you’re deleting comments? Is Anao’s current behaviour somehow a touchy subject we aren’t allowed to discuss? Seems like a Jimmy Dore type editing decision.

I'm not sure if this is exactly relevant but I just wanted to say that I live in Waterloo, Iowa the town ranked worst for African Americans by some bullshit financial commentary site, but it's been a real concern among the people, as our town has an extensive history of discrimination and segregation. Some of the criticisms locally of Bernie is that he has not visited the historically black East Side which was segregated basically so that most of African Americans live there. If you speak to anyone on his campaign you should mention this, because this could have a real impact on his chances in Iowa. The Waterloo metroplex ahs 150,000+ residents of the 3 million Iowans.

Mike, I think you should consider going on to Gavin's show if he agrees the segment is on Lula, I have heard him express support for Jair B so think he must be really misinformed

TMBS

Gavin? The dude, is far right of course, he backs Jair and i'm not sure

TWD

fairplay, I think Gavin knows less about the situation in Brazil than Dave Rubin and you could easily make the case that if it didn't change Gavin's position would at least inform his audience

TWD

but I totally understand that's not your obligation or even the format that he's looking for leftists for

During the GEM, Griscom brought up the need to get to 95 -100% renewables grid. This is not economically feasible and the scientific community is pretty much in total agreement on this. This is something Griscom should look into a bit more as there are some interesting economics at play due to the intermittent nature of wind and solar. The storage technology like lithium batteries are far too expensive, like orders of magnitude too expensive. Plus you can’t store more than a few hours. This causes you the have to over-build to the point where you’re producing so much solar when the sun comes out from so many different panels, that it drives the value of the power down (too much supply) and therefore there’s no return on the investment. This leads to higher rates as well for the consumer. For this reason Every state/country that has a high market share of renewables has much higher electricity bills AND higher emissions because renewables need Natural Gas to firm intermittency. Look at Germany v France. France has the lowest emissions and electricity prices in Europe. They fully decarbonization decades ago because they went totally nuclear. Nuclear power is the only proven way to decarbonize. Yes. Nationalize the grid. But not with renewables. Yes, do a green new deal, but it with nuclear power. Here's a study on why 100% renewables is not achievable or desirable. https://upenn.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Embed.aspx?id=668ed7a0-2748-6851-26a1-203ceb16f9bc&start=138.73746&fbclid=IwAR1PYYrbkiI2_t3PmxO04C7I5SdKlM7QBeWoVI20YrVJlI9AF8i-a69jFsY

I was talking to some reps from an LA electrical union at the Dem convention in SF and they echoed the lack of understanding of this reality. Also, recently Germany’s great push for renewables ran up against this problem. Electric grids require load balancing at all times, and this requires either controllable electricity and use production around the clock or large-scale storage. We don’t currently have the storage technology. As far as I understand, curbing emissions necessitates curbing our current energy usage. A new green deal that builds local infrastructure that reduces usage seems essential. Not as easy a sell in our society as the myth that we can maintain our current use and just replace with renewables. Also, a big thing we can do is reduce the scope of our global military. Warren has made promises of green military energy, but the suggestion is a bit empty. The military already wants this, and the national security interest loopholes are huge. Current tech isn’t sufficient and the emissions contribution is very significant.
