Love the idea of the TMBS impressions style guide. Please make that happen.

My man Brooksy! Well done mentioning Richard Stallman and the free libre software movement. Folks should know that Linux and derivatives, like FreeBSD, are kind of like an ignorant geek form of computer libertarian "freedom". Whereas Stallman's GNU+Linux is what a more democratic freedom in computing should be like. I'd highly recommend M.R. and TMBS migrate to GNU+Linux tech, and ditch your Apple devices. Not just on principle, but for proper freedom, solidarity in support of the community of free libre software development, and also for safety. With free libre open source computing you have the community protection of using software that thousands of people, and many more volunteers, have inspected and protected. And by using GNU+Linux you are tacitly supporting proper sharing and the four software freedoms, whereas Linux alone does not protect non-free open source software from being proprietary owned and controlled by oligarchs (think the McAfee anti-virus shit, you cannot know what malware it may contain, so TIP: if you want free-libre FLOSS anti-virus protection use ClamAV instead! Never use proprietary software like Apple/Micro$oft/Oracle/McAfee, it's like having unprotected sex with a stranger). Lesson is, "open source" (like several Apple, Micro$oft and Oracle offerings) is not by itself democratic, and not necessarily good to support from a moral and ethical perspective. Non-free open source software (like Linux, Apache, OpenOffice = BAD) ~ libertarian in politics. Free-libre open source software (GNU+Linux, Tor, LibreOffice = GOOD) ~ socialistic in politics. I hope all good socially conscious TMBS'ers read the GNU Manifesto and the four software freedoms: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html Stallman's GNU public Licence is, I think, one of the most important legal documents in computer science history, perhaps the most important in copyright and patent law ever.

Prof Wolff: the way to counter the reactionary conservative rhetoric that "...everything good in China is a result of capitalism..." is to just ask them what has funded the investment in China's economic growth? Was it all private bank loans that had to be repaid? No. Objectively, without possible refute, the funding was net government issuing of money (i.e., deficit spending of the sovereign currency, the Yuan). That'll shut them up good. The issue is not capitalism versus socialism, it is about how the government best can utilize It's most powerful non-violent machinery --- it's capacity to issue new money. Once you have that analysis, then socialism emerges naturally as clearly the best way for a government to provision society with what it needs. You do not have to assert prima facie that socialism is superior, you can let the social and economic impacts play out, and socialism will always win empirically.

Thrilled that you guys had The Wolff on. Mad props. China Mieville next or maybe Zizek?! :)

I could not disagree more on the loneliness angle. It is to close to mental health scapegoating. There are contradictions.

not at all, i can broaden, but i'm going off of Scott Atran in this, its definitely not a blame

Michael, you have spell check. Use it.

WTH! There is no way I am going to abandon the 10,000 hours of training I have logged in to intuit the IOS operating system. Apple devices are the most functional and attractive consumer items made. Why would I throw away all that investment to get an inferior product that requires another 10,000 hours to learn? Not gonna happen!
