Martin Jacques (@MartJacques), author of "When China Rules the World," joins us to talk about exactly that.

How to categorize China? The importance of the state-owned sector and how to think of the Chinese state. State continuity. Official trade unions in China. The leadership of Xi Jinping. How China is emerging as a world leader. Repression, racial tensions, and dissidence. China's ecological vision. Our problem with China not becoming like us.

His distinction between racial and cultural/civilizational groupings is bizarre and straight out of 19th century race science. A bit baffling to hear no pushback from Michael on that

Like whether Tibetans represent a different racial stock from the Han is irrelevant unless you're speaking in what anthropologists call "emic" terms (ie. In terms of the concepts operative in Chinese racial ideologies), but it wasn't clear that was what he was doing.

Mr. Jacques nailed it about American's mindset regarding our place in the world. To be second economically would be like the end since that is the only thing we have left to be number 1 on and that's just total wealth. Many countries beat us on net wealth and things like happiness, crime, homelessness, etc. we are way down on the list.

I’m actually in the middle of his book! Great stuff as usual guys. Edit: my cousin studied and lived in China 🇨🇳 as a student. I remember her coming home with a chinese boyfriend who was obsessed with CGI and the terminator movies. Somewhat irrelevant but it sparked a deep interest in the country from an early age.
