I used to be on Channel Awesome while it was known as TGWTG; to address the question of "Why be on this website that just HOSTS your work?" It was a lot different in 2010 when I was on; a lot of us didn't use YouTube, and opted for Blip (which folded as you guys mentioned). Blip was not good for expanding an audience; it was hard to find people, and simply posting there resulted in hardly any hits. So being hosted on the site, which was getting a lot of hits monthly, was the way to do it. When I left TGWTG in 2012, my Blip hits went from pretty decent to basically zero. I started paying more attention to my YouTube channel not long after that and managed to build it up, but in retrospect I should have been growing that the entire time because hot damn, it was a process. I also found that once I left, my content got a lot better in quality, as did many producers who left. I think another appealing thing for us was we wanted to be a part of that community; we kind of wanted a clique and friends to be around. I think we might have been disillusioned with that because it wasn't exactly friendly, but when you first join, it IS exciting. You feel like you're a part of something important. But it soon became a shit show and people (including me) found that our content wasn't really appreciated, and there was a lot of sexist behavior behind the scenes. It actually blows my mind that CA is being talked about to this degree and has spread to different outlets. I remember wanting to be on that site more than anything when I was younger, and now I feel like the whole site is really just hot garbage. And THANK YOU for addressing the NC's insane views on Fair Use. I remember that video getting traction and other people spouting things like "YEAH TELL IT LIKE IT IS, CRITIC", and I am over here thinking I've just my mind because I thought he didn't know what he was talking about.

Thanks for chiming in with some first-hand accounts. It's funny to think about how uncharted the online video scene was even 8 years ago. The desire to go beyond a site that JUST hosts makes sense, especially back then. I've whined about some of Doug's bogus fair use rants over the years but worried I'd come off as a jerk if I got vocal online about it all. Now that I'm seeing content creators from CA speak out about this stuff I feel a little less like a prick about being so critical about his misinformation spreading. The three of us have had dilemmas over copyright quarrels in the past and had to come to compromises with one another (usually I was most concerned about it and sometimes unjustly so). I hope we didn't come off too uninformed or gossipy in this episode. The hour before recording this podcast was spent discussing if it would be in poor taste to talk about Channel Awesome and the Walkers, but considering some of our creative parallels, mutual friends, and the irrefutable crap the site has put some people though... hopefully we made the right choice. It's an easy subject to get real personal about and I probably said some glass-house caliber things. Hopefully we don't lose out on that ShirtCrate money. -Kevin

You guys were definitely tasteful and it didn't come off as gossipy. I don't think anyone needs to worry about coming off like an ass with the CA stuff, heh. I think the producers have been burnt out and disappointed for a LONG time and are happy to see everything get such spread.

Anyone else think Ryan's broadway musical answer was very...Ryanesque?

The podcast is one of the main things to look forward to. I'm sure everyone else would agree.

mobius

Awwwww, you guys are just like a real podcast now, with ads and everything

Lootcrate ad segment when it's just an hour of trying really hard to describe what's in the box
