This NEW performance template is all about "punch in effects." Use the punch in effects to create new rhythms from your existing patterns.

This performance template is all about "punch in effects." Use the punch in effects to create new rhythms from your existing patterns. The effects are glitchy, lo-fi, and full of grit. I originally designed this template for drum and bass, but it works great for all genres and tempos. The idea is that you play the effects yourself, like another instrument. There are combos and synergy, and with practice, you can master the move sets. No matter what kind of music you are making, this will transform your project.

Updates and edits remarked at the end of the post!

INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:

Plug in the USB to your Octatrack -> On your Octatrack press PROJ to enter the Settings -> System -> USB Disk mode ->

Your Octatrack will mount as a disk on your computer. Open your Octatrack drive on your computer and find your set folder (typically called PRESETS MKII if you have a MKII).

Open your set folder on your Octatrack via your computer -> Drop the UNZIPPED project folder called Hyper FX x.x in with your other project folders on your Octatrack.

Press NO on your Octatrack to leave disk mode.

Open the project file called Hyper FX x.x on your Octatrack.

Hyper FX x.x Template for the Octatrack // Manual by EZBOT

All Banks and Patterns are populated with the Hyper FX Template at default scale of INFINITE and a PATTERN CHANGE of 64 steps (4 bars).

***Clicks and pops can be caused by unstable BPM from external clocking sources. To avoid this use a stable clocking source such as the Octatrack itself.

***Audio CC outs is disabled by default.

***Be sure RECORD QUICK MODE is enabled in your system settings. --> PROJECT --> SYSTEM --> PERSONALIZE --> RECORD QUICK MODE (ENABLE)

***Transport Send/Receive, Clock Send/Receive, and Program Change Send are all active by default and set to MIDI channel 10. Do not send the Octatrack a clock source when you want the Octatrack to be the master clock, or disable incoming clock: FUNC + MIDI to enter MIDI clock settings, here you can disable or change MIDI clock settings.

AUDIO ROUTING: Both A/B and C/D share the same effects.

CUE is set to POST FX but PRE Stutter and Stretch Effects. Headphones are set to CUE only by default for transitions.

TO RECORD:

Method 1: Press YES when not in step sequencer mode. A 4-bar loop will be recorded onto track 4. Recordings are quantized to 4-bar intervals. i.e. Press YES on bar 3 of 4 and a recording will begin on Bar 1. Press YES on bar 4/8 and a recording will begin on bar 5.

Method 2: Press REC-3 while track 5 is highlighted and a recording will begin on the next 16th note interval. The recording will end either after you press REC-3 again or after 64 steps has passed (4 bars).

***Recording without record quick mode enabled will require you to hold track 5 and press REC-3.

TO SAVE A RECORDING TO FILE: Select Track 5, Press FUNC + REC 3 and choose "Save This Recording". This is useful for creating stems to save and use in other projects or to transfer to your computer.

BEAT REPEATS: FREEZE DELAY is available on Tracks 1. To use the FREEZE DELAY hold FUNC + DOWN ARROW and select DELAY CONTROL. GREEN button 9 controls the FREEZE DELAY for inputs A/B and C/D. This will freeze your whole mix.

FX BLOCKS: Hyper, Corpo, Zone, and Dream

64 Scenes across 4 Parts. To move to a different set of 16 scenes/fx press PART and use the arrow keys to select a new SET OF 16 EFFECTS.

Each FX block has unique but similar "PUNCH IN EFFECTS". Engage your effect, while the crossfader is at 100% wet "jump" to another effect. Stack them together to create new rhythms.

*** PART 4 / DREAM has 3 effects worth noting. Scene 2/3 are a tape stop and tape speed up. Scene 15 is a REVERSE and requires you to record a 4-bar loop first. PRESS YES or REC-3 to start a loop.

Scenes 1-16 x 4:

1. Beat Repeat 1

2. Beat Repeat 2

3. Beat Repeat 3

4. Beat Repeat 4

5. Stutter Effect 1

6. Stutter Effect 2

7. Stutter Effect 3

8. Stutter Effect 4

9. Stretch Effect 1

10. Stretch Effect 2

11. Stretch Effect 3

12. Stretch Effect 4

13. Filter 1

14. Filter 2

15. Filter 3

16. Master Looper

Hyper FX Template now includes a 1-Free-Flex version for sampling but loses the 4-bar looper.

Tweaked several effects timing and timbre

Changed default tempo to 120

10/27/24

Uncued Track 4 as some people had CUE mutes track enabled, causing confusion for some users.

10/27/24

Added the DJ EQ to the Live Looper Track (T5)

Adjusted Several Effects Timing

Adjusted several effects EQ

CUED Track 4 by default for DJ transitions with the Looper.

2/28/25

SOLVED AUDIO DROP OUTS - Changed master length to INFINITE to avoid resample trig resets leading to unwanted audio dropouts. Applies to both Hyper FX and Hyper FX 1FF.

Changed PATTERN CHANGE value to 64. Applies to both Hyper FX and Hyper FX 1FF.

Adjusted several FX to reflect what I thought sounded better. Objective of course

Yes mate! Lovely artwork, too 👌🏻 I take it this release is out of beta, then?

ezbot

Yeah, it's going to be a work in progress but this is a very "live show" ready version.

Russell Watkins

Another tour de force Matt, thanks. Should I run audio from the Cue outputs to audio inputs for this?

ezbot

Nope! Just plug in and play

Hi Mate, perfect template :) Used it with digitakt ii in overbridge mode and a modular setup using expert sleepers es3 lightpipe with rme babyface. First I ran everything through Ableton. Made two mixing subgroups and routed both channels through the expert sleepers back into the Octatrack. Huge fun and the whole Sunday passed by.. The latency is pretty ok but I have to figure out how to compensate the latency within Ableton. Maybe you or others have an idea? Thanx again for your excellent and inspiring work. All the best, nic

ezbot

That’s awesome!

ezbot

You’re welcome ☺️

Hans Twite

Congrats Matt! This one is EPIC AF

I'd love to hear what you do with them!

Absolutely amazing template! So much fun and the time just melts away. Thank you!

ezbot

Glad you are enjoying it!

I have always wanted to have this kind of punch in fx box and I’ve never expected that octa would be the one for this. I use the perf mixer in my live sets a lot but THIS THING is such a lifehack in studio setting. Can’t thank you enough!!

ezbot

Glad you like it, more to come :)

Edited my own comment. I noticed there was like a volume difference on the Master Volume of both 1.06 templates. FF seems to be saved at +24 on the Main and the non FF is at zero. I just reset the Main volume to zero on the FF and fixed my issue of being able to switch back and forth in experimenting without a difference in initial volume at load-up! Thanks again!

Reni

hei there just installed the latest hyper fx template huge;0) thanks man! got the small issue that when on track 1 vol is at +63 on in c/d I get aliasing sound like and if I turn it down it is ok - can you tell me what I do wrong? many thanks Renato

ezbot

check the MAIN menu and turn down DIR to 0

Reni

wow you are fast man;0) thanks a lot!!! it works;0) hug

Do you suggest just using the most current version of your templates? I see this one has 3 versions and my brain freezes in response lol

ezbot

Use the newest for sure 👍

Fantastic work! Long-time viewer of the channel as you were there at the beginning of my OT journey as we started around the same time so it's amazing to see how far your channel has come and awesome to see you also sticking with the OT as we know there really is still nothing else *quite* like it out there, I've been very pleasantly surprised by the Tonverk and I'm excited to see how they continue to develop it (usb host with more inputs being #1) and if my suspicions are correct that the next Elektron release will be the long awaited multi-engine synth successor to the Analog Four. I've benefited so much from your channel that I'll share my #1 TonverkOTjr tip that I'm sure you're already using: midi map the mix channel FX dry/wet parameter (and other key mix track parameters) to a midi bank to turn the mix track into a "quasi-OT master track" and use the various midi banks as your TV scenes. Oxi E16 has been great for making performance banks/scenes- couldn't recommend it more highly if you've yet to pick one up. Simple yet very powerful device with a nice desktop editor. Elektron generously exposed nearly every TV parameter to a corresponding CC so the E16 and TV are a dream pairing. Cheers and stay well! Thanks for all of the fun and hard work over the years.

ezbot

Thank yoU! I am getting the OXI E16! I'll let you know what i do with it :) Cheers!
