This new template includes classic techno effects and many experimental effects inspired by the Hyper FX template and Performance Mixer 3.0, though none of the effects are quite the same. The superpower of this template is the 4X4, which has multiple meanings.

First, four Free Static/Flex Machine tracks are preassigned and ready for sampling. They are prepared on all parts across all banks and patterns. The flex tracks can and should be routed through the Hybrid 4X4 template's effects via the CUE output and back into the Octatrack inputs.

Second, the effects are set up in four blocks of four effect types. These effect types are consistent across all PARTS. The PARTS are named EARTH, AIR, FIRE, and WATER.

FX block 1 is a set of four beat repeats. Some repeats have modulation, and all of them repeat at different rates for you to slam at any time.

FX block 2 is a set of four "Hyper FX" or "beat juggling" effects. These effects are meant to create new rhythms and travel to otherworldly, granular-stretching soundscapes. All of these effects are synced and play well with any music type.

FX block 3 is filter effects. These are manual effects you can ease into with your crossfader. Scene 9 is always a classic high-pass filter, and scene 10 is a low-pass. The other two filter effects will vary vastly from part to part.

FX block 4 is automated effects. These are risers, build-ups, and tension breakers.

This template took me a very long time to create, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have during its development. I look forward to seeing your results.

HYBRID 4X4 x.x Performance Template Manual by EZBOT

All Banks and Patterns are populated with the HYBRID 4X4 x.x Template at a default tempo of 120 BPM and a pattern master scale of 64 steps (4 bars).

***Clicks and pops can be caused by unstable BPM from external clocking sources. To avoid this use a stable clocking source such as the Octatrack itself or an analog clock source.

*** Transport Receive and Clock Receive are active by default. FUNC + MIDI to enter MIDI clock settings, here you can disable or change MIDI clock settings.

AUDIO ROUTING: Both A/B and C/D share the same effects.

STATIC/FLEX TRACKS: To use STATIC or FLEX TRACKS on 5-8, you must leave them cued. By default, Tracks 5-8 output only to the CUE bus. Run the CUE outputs either back into the Octatrack (A/B or C/D) or into another device to pass the audio through and into the Octatrack.**DO NOT HAVE "CUE MUTES TRACK" ENGAGED IN YOUR PERSONALIZE SETTINGS.

By default, all tracks are set up to record from TRACK 3; this is the end of the chain for the performance effects. Effects from scenes 5-8 cannot be recorded into FLEX tracks unless you opt to record MAIN OUT instead of TRACK 3. Flex Tracks 5-8 are preassigned to buffers 5-8 as 24-bit dynamic recorders. Recorders are set with a TRIG setting of ONE2. This means one press to record and one press to stop recording. Recorders are unique per part on the Octatrack, so be creative. There is no quantization set on the recorders. Tracks are set to STATIC MACHINES by default but can easily be changed to FLEX on a per part basis with preassigned recorders engaged.

**FLEX VERSION**

Tracks 5-8 are setup as FLEX MACHINES with default ONE-SHOT RECORD TRIGS ASSIGNED. Tracks will record 4-bars (64 steps) by default. To arm a recording press YES. **Be aware that when you are not "inside" a track aka, step sequencer is not active, you will ARM all 4 recording buffers to record, this may delete recordings you have not saved yet.

STUTTER FX: FREEZE DELAY is available for all inputs and CAN be triggered separately. To use the FREEZE DELAY, hold FUNC + DOWN ARROW and select DELAY CONTROL. GREEN button 9 controls the FREEZE DELAY for both inputs AB and CD.

64 Scenes across 4 Parts. To move to a different set of 16 scenes/FX press PART and use the arrow keys to select a new SET OF 16 EFFECTS.

Scene Map: EARTH, AIR, FIRE, and WATER.

Scenes 1-4: Beat Repeats

Scenes 5-8: Hyper FX (Beat Juggling)

Scenes 9-12: Filter FX

Scenes 13-16: Automated FX (Risers)

Scene 9 is always a HIGH PASS filter on all 4 parts.

5.31.26 Bug Fix

4X3 REC Trigs for live looping were not on all patterns of the template.

Dope! Is there an additional tutorial video in the Pipeline? Thanks for doing these templates!

ezbot

Yes! This week I’ll explain it

Jim Arbon

Noice! Can’t wait to give this a whirl. Thanks for the love and attention you put into these, dude 🙏 I was trying to think of how to make something like this work in the Tonverk. I’m sure that one day you’ll bless us with some amazing TV templates! 🤘🏻

ezbot

My plan is to release a bunch of multi-sample machines for tonverk, that sounds like a really good time for me and a great use of my synths and modular

Harvo Busse

Nice one! Really great job. How do I record music for ex from Digitone into the Flex tracks so that I can play them Live as a Sample just with the Octatrack? love these templates!!

ezbot

Select your flex track (5-8) and set your recorder to the length you want and press REC-3. You may want to use a one shot recorder or set recorder quantization in REC2 to PLEN. Then hit play and press REC3 afterward.

Vito Disketto

Nice! having a lot of fun with this. btw, something weird happens on my OT after a while it stays in standby, basically it freezes and there is nothing else to do but to restart the machine. I don't know if this might happen also during the session, as it happened to me only when i left about one hour the machine in stand by without playing it.

ezbot

Sounds like a funky OT. Try a reset and firmware update

Vito Disketto

it actually never happened before. anyway, i doenloadedd the 1.2 version and now it doesn't happen anymore. idk if that's related or not.

ezbot

Corrupt download, that happens for sure

Hello EZBot, Super fun to play with, but I would like to know if it possible to only have input AB or CD routed to the effect while the other two keep on playing with no effects. I have a Syntakt (my Digitakt 2 is back to Sweden for screen bug fix) and an DT 2 is playing some nice agressive bass so I'd like to experiment with various effects routing and I think that having the ability to route AB + CD or AB only or CD only to the effect might open interesting possibilities. Thx for your help and support and congratulation for your work. gregober. P.S. I am a beginner with the Octa but have been playing since two years with most Elektron boxes (beside Heat).

ezbot

Yes, you can unroute the FLEX machines and you can also choose to have audio come in that does not get effected by the template scenes. To unroute a FLEX machine bring its track level up and is CUE level to 0. Hold the CUE button while on the selected track and turn it down with the level encoder. To play audio into the OT without going through your effects remove the inputs from the THRU machine by adjusting its input on the SRC page. After that go to the MIX page and set the source you want to 127. Be aware that using the mix input is only stereo. No mono inputs, they will be stuck on one side of the stereo field.

gregober

Thx a lot for these explanations, I'll try them out ASAP !

Darren_Gally

In This Template on which tracks is possible to load samples to play them ?

ezbot

You cna do that on track 5-8 :) tracks 1-4 are for performance fx only.

TJ

Thank you very much for this! Is there any special reason you are linking to 2985s of the YT video? Seems to be just a general Q & A, I guess we need to watch the full 1:15 stream to understand the details of this template? A short ten minutes rundown of the features / differences would be very appreciated! Thanks again and nice holidays!

Battlemaid

First, thank you for this and all you do to support the community. I really like this format (flex plus input), however I notice a lack of deep low end bass and rumble on my flex tracks coming in to cue. Is there something I can do to mitigate this without breaking everything else? Thanks in advance.

ezbot

Hey, that should not be happening and doesn't happen when I do it. Check and see if the filter on track 2 has the BASE above 0

Battlemaid

Merry New Year! Thanks! Got that sorted with your help. Another quick question, I’d like to record my performances with this template in to the OT. Can I do that from T3 or do i need to set T8 up as master? My concern is whether or not recording from T3 will muff up any of the effects.

ANESCIA

Hello nerds….No laughing I’ve only had this thing for about 6 weeks and everyday is a school day, I’ve tried to put off templates and just enjoy getting familiar with some fundamentals, then I dragged n dropped the octatrack ezbot solo template and my tiny little brain crumbled in awe…the effects the looper! Suddenly I wanted more!! Anyways I thought I would dip my toes into 4x4 since I don’t want to introduce external devices just yet and liked the idea of flex track options. Basically I want to pull samples into the machine and enjoy the fx I have cue out running back in and changed T5 to (sample) instead of sample buffer I can hear audio and play with effects but it’s like doubled against T3 I think so I hear a constant loop alongside the effected loop (if I mute T3 it actually sounds cleaner but can’t use FX) I’m starting to think I’ve delved into templates way too soon or il I’m missing something quite blatant anyways love the community love the vids love the OT ✌🏼

ANESCIA

I re-read that and basically can someone give me a basic breakdown of loading in samples to use in 4x4 for someone with the brain the size of walnut

ezbot

Hey! Load some samples into your static machine slots. Assign them to tracks 5-8 however you like. Run the CUE out back into AB or CD ---OR into the input of one of your devices that is running into either of those inputs.

Brandon Riggs

Hey, thanks for making my Octatrack so much damn fun! Question, I love this fx template. I have my TR1000 running through it. It works great for a few sessions then all of a sudden it just stops working. At first i was like, maybe i un-did a trig on the thru tracks, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm trying to check if i some how turned something down, muted something, but it happens every time. The lights are blinking above REC1 and such, so I know the TR1000 is playing. I always disconnect the TR1000 and plug it straight into my mixer and it plays. Has to be something not letting the sound through. I'm sure there are a million scenarios, but seems to just be this template.

ezbot

TR-1000 is the master clock? If so, it may be sending a MIDI message that is causing the audio to silence. This doesn't happen on the other templates? You can try copying it over from a fresh download, sometimes the download and unzipping causes bad files.

Brandon Riggs

Hey, back with another obvious question that myself (and chat gpt) can't seem to figure out. I've recorded my loop into flex track 5. Sample very visible. I've set play back trig on track 5, turned up cue level in mixer, and cannot get play back to save my life. I feel like it has somethign to do with the cue output. Because that my output source, right? The default cue level is all the way down on the flex tracks, correct? So after recrodsing my loop, and while its still playing, after setting playback trig on same track, to hear it, i need to just turn the cue level up?? I see soemthing about running cue back into inputs a/b or c/d... that can't mean unplugging my devices, right? Sorry if this is completely obvious, but I've always had trouble with sample playback on all of your templates so Ive just defaulted to using your templates strictly as an fx box, but i know it way more than that so it's time to just ask...

ezbot

I think you may have CUE MUTES TRACK enabled? It's in the personalize menu, if its enabled and you have the track CUED it will be silent

Brandon Riggs

So, you were correct, the 'cue mutes track' was enabled. But, still no sound 🥲 There is something simple and obvious that I'm not doing. Because again, I can' t ever seem to get the recorded files to play out loud with most of your templates. I've always just been happpy to use it as an fx box and didn't want to bother. But if you have some suggestions, that would be amazing. Again, let me state that the music playing from my tr1000, 303, and tonverk are being recorded properly,. the wave forms look great as they're recorded into the Octatrack.

ezbot

Do you have the CUE outs plugged back into the OT?

Brandon Riggs

Umm, i do not?? ha. But does that mean sacrificing some inputs? So, run cables out of cue outs and into C/D inputs?

Brandon Riggs

i just ran cables from cue outs to input C/D, laid down trig, armed (not sure if i have to do that to get it to play), and still no sound. I cant even hit function+yes to preview the waveform.

ezbot

Try turning up the track level just to make sure your hearing the audio tracks, the track level should not normally be turned up though. If you cleaned the sequence on the template you may have broken some of the functionality. You can also try going to a new pattern and trying again. Also FUNC + CUE is a life saver

gattART

Well... I'm moving house soon, continents actually, but my OT is under the camp bed in my ex living room... loading the 4x3 on to the CF card now, can't wait to try the new FX and sampling ins and out... Wasn't keeping the Flex slots before anyways, and I still stick to my vid that the only way to get proper sampling on a Syntakt is to velcro an OP-Z on to of it... Excellent timing for this post!

rainer

finallyyyy thank you!

Ben Waters

this is very very cool thanks for all that you do - i need to ask about the manual (txt file) where you say the OT should be slaved though? I am running a syntakt through the performance mixer and just plan to load my flex tracks with whatever else. So in your opinion the syntakt should be master? thanks

Jim Arbon

*gentle poke* 😉
