Yes, this is an opinion piece, despite it being true and 100% correct in every way ;)

I would love to hear your thoughts, would you replace anything from this setup or would you keep it the same?

2026-09-19 02:00 Personally I agree.. and as a veteran junglist I have come to appreciate the 1.5 on DT. On the other hand every time I see you jamming with that roland it makes me want to start producing acid.

Yeah, I am considering getting an RE-303. That sound is addictive

Pat LaBine

I’ll probably put the 1010 Blackbox on the DT inputs. Might be cool to talk about 303 DIY kits as I had no clue about the Hydronium and RE-303!

Chosane

wait, what is the 128 steps thing? i don't get it at all, like how do you knowhats happening in steps 65-128?

ezbot

RE-303 is deluxe!

ezbot

It changed the resolution of the pages so you still see 16 steps per page but each step represents 2 steps. You use micro timing to move within those steps

hi there! I have OTmk1 and A4/AR/AK all chained into octatrack, with a s\r external effects chain too... did you guys havin problem like me on volume settings? i mean i'm struggling to ear everything balanced, there is always something that sounds muddy, distorted, awful, ot's in leds always clipping. is it possible that i have to put volume less than 12 o'clock? Especially the effects. I used this setup (along with fx template for weeks) but then i played Analog keys straight into my Zen Delay and ....oh my god it was a pleasure from my ears again..so clean plenty of headroom and lush , iwas forget how good sounded... Ho do you manage the chained elektron gear? it's the same with the digi boxes and octa MK2?

Existenz

second question: i have a thru machine and a neighbor machine (which are the CD inpouts of AK/A4) on track 3 and 4. Then a thru machine on track 2 which is the return of the external effects witch cue outs on send. Which track i have to cue in the chain? the thru or the nei? cause i have phase issues and bad sounding synths.

ezbot

The Octatrack mk1 doesn’t have the same headroom as the Octatrack mk2 so sounds are going to get more easily distorted. It also doesn’t use balance inputs like the mark two does, which also allows it to have more headroom, and as a result of cleaner, audio input. There is even more to it than that, the machine is old and devices like the Zen are new with new chips and m amps.

Existenz

Ohhhhh sh***, i knew i will finish to buy the mk2… i’m so sorry cause is a So valid Piece of gear the mk1 and mine is mint.. and i would hate the difference on look between the other mk1 machines 😭😭😭

ezbot

Mk1 is fine just turn down the machines and boost it in post on your mixer

ezbot

You may need to turn on CUE mutes track to avoid phasing or/and also turn on DELAY COMPENSATE

Existenz

Thank you Matt, 😊😊

somewhat similar to part of Existenz first question. I'm running the same boxes as you (OTmk2, DT, DN and ST), with DN going into ST then into the OT(same same again) and while I'm becoming more consistent with the gain staging of DN>ST I wondered... Do you have a default/strategy/tips for the gain staging of DN>ST>OTINCD? I noticed you have the tape markers for your master vol knobs on the DT, DN and ST... Any further explanation on how you got to those levels, and the input levels on ST?

ezbot

You can ignore my tape markers, that's a long story but I am kinda stuck with them until I go through and readjust all my songs. I recommend leaving all the volume knobs at centered at 12 o'clock. Boost volumes the master mix post Octatrack so you arent sending overly gained signals into the OT.
