Techno Performance Template x.x Manual by EZBOT

All Banks and Patterns are populated with the Techno Performance Template at a default tempo of 130 BPM and a pattern scale of 128 steps (8 bars). This is an 8 bar template with many effects that have clocked modulation over 8 bars for builds up and drops.

***Clicks and pops can be caused by unstable BPM from external clocking sources. To avoid this use a stable clocking source such as the Octatrack itself.

***Audio MIDI Channels are disabled by default.

- Effects with an asterisk have FREEZE delays.

- "ALL" refers to effects that effect the entire mix with the same effect on both inputs A/B and C/D.

***Be sure RECORD QUICK MODE is enabled in your system settings. --> PROJECT --> SYSTEM --> PERSONALIZE --> RECORD QUICK MODE (ENABLE)

TO RECORD:

Method 1: Select Track 4 and PRESS REC-3 once, this will initiate a recording at the next 8 bars. Wait until you see the + (recording) symbol on track 4 and press REC-3 once. After the recording has finished and the + symbol is now a play arrow, cross fade to FX scene 16 with a swift motion (do not do this slowly) to switch to your recorded 8 bar loop.

Method 2: Press YES. Be sure you are not in step edit mode (no red record button). Select Track 4. Wait until you see the + (recording) symbol on track 4 and press REC-3 twice. After the recording has finished and the + symbol is now a play arrow, cross fade to FX scene 16 with a swift motion (do not do this slowly) to switch to your recorded 8 bar loop.

Several of the effects in this template require you to understand this operation. These effects are pointed out in the effects map below.

***Recording without record quick mode enabled will require you to hold track 4 and press REC-3 twice as opposed to just pressing REC-3 twice after the recording has initiated.

TO SAVE A RECORDING TO FILE: Press FUNC + REC 3 and choose "Save This Recording". This is useful for creating stems to save and use in other projects or to transfer to your computer.

COMPRESSORS: Separate compressors are available on both stereo input sets A/B and C/D. By default, they apply mild tasteful compression to your whole mix. To set custom compressor values for each pattern, lock the compressor effect parameters on the first step of Track 1 and Track 5 within each pattern. When changing parts if you have locked in compressor settings on the step sequencer the compressor wont kick in until it triggers that step.

SIDECHAIN PUMPING: Sidechain pumping is available on all patterns and all parts. By default the pattern is 4 on the floor. To use the sidechain pumping effect turn up LFO 1 depth on Track 5. To adjust where the ducking occurs copy and paste the BRIGHT GREEN TRIGS on Track 5. You can externally trigger SIDECHAIN PUMPING by sending a MIDI note to CHANNEL 5 on the Octatrack.

STUTTER FX: FREEZE DELAYS are available separately on Tracks 1 and 5, and 16. To use the the FREEZE DELAY hold FUNC + DOWN ARROW and select DELAY CONTROL. GREEN button 9 controls the FREEZE DELAY for inputs A/B and GREEN button 13 controls the freeze delay for inputs C/D. Press 9 + 13 to FREEZE the entire mix. FREEZE DELAYS occur before effects are applied so you can hold a frozen buffer and then apply effects. Hold GREEN button 16 to freeze the entire mix above all other FREEZE DELAYS. Have fun with this.

MASTER EQ: To use the master equalizer lock in your preferred EQ parameters on step 1 and 2 of track 8. Track 8 is only 2 steps long. This way when you switch parts the EQ will remain the same.

10.10.23

- 2 parts were missing the DJ equalizer.

10.8.23

- CUE mix is now set to default values.

- Renamed the file to Techno PT x.x.x so that you could see the full name when selecting projects.

- Adjusted several effects on part PARTY: Echo Freeze hits harder, Daft Punk Effect Alternate version is more effective, and LFO twist is reworked to be more prominent in the "twist".

- Adjusted some of the effects on SPACE. Most notably Hallway Riser on scene 1. The reverb is much smoother now.

9.23.23

- Deleted MIDI data from MIDI tracks and reset all to defaults.

- Default swing is no longer 57 (This was a mistake to begin with).

- A few minor FX tweaks.

9.11.23

- Completed the template.

- Added several new FX, see the FX map below.

- Adjusted several FX, several FX reworks.

9.3.23

- Added a master EQ per pattern (see instructions)

- Added 6 new FX across the 4 parts.

- Updated several FX.

- Looper is no longer disassociated from the BPM - time stretch is turned on by default.

- Crossfading is no longer using the filter and has returned to track volume.

- All banks and patterns have the template on them.

8.14.23

- Updated Template to Beta 2.

- All banks and patterns now have the Techno Performance Template beta on them.

- Squished some weird bugs.

- Added 2 new scenes.

- Changed the transition crossfade to filtering instead of amplitude.

I had some teething troubles but it was me not you :) This is a great template. I'm playing an electro/footwork crossover set on Saturday and I'm gonna use this with my Moog/Modular rig. I have 4 mono inputs so I change the inputs from AB & CD to A+B & C+D. Any gotchas with doing that?

ezbot

Nope, should be legit! Just pay attention to the instructions for live sampling that I wrote down and your golden.

Ardler Saint

Got it running like a charm synced with Stolperbeats. Thanks!!

Quentin Hayot

This is great! Question about the looper: once you did the initial double tap on REC3. You only have to press YES for subsequent recording, right ?

ezbot

Other way around. You press yes, the recording will start at the beginning of the next 8 bars. Over the recording starts press Rec 3 twice so it all end it at 8 bars.

Quentin Hayot

So, if I understood correctly: 1- Press YES 2- Wait for the 1st step of the 1st bar (recording starts) 3- Press REC3 twice anytime during the next 8 bars 4- Recording stops I might do something wrong, T4 never goes back to just "play" (>) it stays "+>". And if I go into Rec Edit on REC3, I can see the buffer growing (but the play head loops over the 8 first bars. What do you think? Disclaimer, the OT is not the master clock. I use the OXI one as master.

ezbot

Make sure you have track 4 highlighted when you press rec 3 twice

ezbot

I just tested and it works perfectly. You have to wait until the plus symbol appears before pressing rec 3 twice. Try holding track 4 and pressing rec 3 twice

ezbot

Check to see if you have record quick enabled, it’s in the personalize settings at the bottom

Etienne Stehelin

I feel like a dumbass saying this but I'm not getting any sound (except for cue) from the headphone output. Is this intentional? Most of my time on the OT is lunchbreaks at work, so headphones are my main squeeze.

Quentin Hayot

Quick record did the trick ! It works now, thanks :)

Jim Arbon

What do your Mixer settings look like? Also, make sure the Thru track(s) has a trig on the first step, then press play. Now you can press stop and the Thru track(s) let audio through. This always trips me up 😄

ezbot

Yes you just need to adjust what the CUE is listening to in the MIX menu

gattART

You bring your OT to work??? OK, I have to clear out my top drawer... I forseen a rather unproductive period at work... 😜

ezbot

haha! I work at a synthesizer shop :p

ezbot

I think it has to do with the Octatrack scaling off of 64 steps equaling 4 bars and we are recording at half speed. So it's taking twice as long to record what the machine believes is 4 bars. Something like that. Octa-math

Df

Woot ! I would have need to change quite a lot in order to fit my play style if I were to use the other templates but this one in very close to what I have in mind ! I really like that the Master Track is back and that the Looper Track makes use of it. Thanks for the hard work putting it all together Matt A random though that crossed my mind: Would there be a way for the looper to record it's 8 bar loop continuously in a way that user only has to "stop" the recording and play it back ? As opposed to starting the recording then stopping it

ezbot

Unfortunately not :/ it erases the buffer when the recording starts. Instead of replacing it as it records

Vibes

What does the astricks* mean next to the effect names?

Tim Reinecke

Hey Matt! Idk why, but the looper is not working. The Template i want to use is The Perf Mixer 3.0.6 (4 bar). I did Everything how you described. Pressed „yes“ waited for the + Symbol until its gone again. Pressed REC3 in any Possible way. Switched to scene 16. fades over but no Recording plays back. Record Quick Mode is checked (enabled) And cue Mutes Track is unchecked (disabled) Hope someone can help me 🥲🙏🏼

ezbot

There is a trig on step 1 of the recorder track? When you press AED do you see a recording in the editor on the recorder track?

ezbot

It means it uses a freeze delay

Tim Reinecke

Thanks for answering. Yes there is a trig on step 1 on Track 4 and Yes, there I can See the Recording in it. But how can I put it on the B side?

ezbot

Scene 16 is the track for that, I think if you’re having an issue there is something on you’re OT or project that is setup in a way that is disabling the record scene from playing back. To test it, go to the track with the recording and turn the amp volume to 0 and see if you hear the recording

Tim Reinecke

I think I'm doing something fundamentally wrong or I don't understand the octatrack well enough. Just to show what I did: 1. i pressed "yes" on track 4 (the loop record track (?)) 2. waited until the +> turns to > again, double pressed REC3 (tbh idk why this is important) 3. I can see a recording in AED on track 4 4. switch to scene 16, to play back, but nothing happens, no modulations i "recorded".And when i go to the AMP of track 4 and turn the Level down, I still hear everything im doing live. Not the recording. Hope you can follow

Tim Reinecke

Hey Matt! Maybe you remember my Problem with the OT in Terms of 4bar/8bar (both not working) looping. I still have no Clue whats going on and I couldnt find someoneelse with the same problem. Could you, or some one please give me a try and try to help me? Would be very Kind🙏🏼 thanks!

Tim Reinecke

Btw. I have this Problems with all of your Templates. It has to be something with the OT itself.

ezbot

Hey, try using the Performance Mixer 3B. Press YES when not in step record mode. Select scene 16 and fade over after the + goes away.

Tim Reinecke

I am 1 step Further now. Nothing had changed when I tried another Template. Now im back im 3.0.6 (4) I am at this Point, that After hitting Yes and fade over to B when the Recording finished, that I can hear now the Recording and the Live Playback at the Same time. I think I did this by pressing and hold A in the Mixer Menu and changed something on the DIR. But sadly I don’t exactly know what whappened. Now: I can do recordings, can hear them, But hear the live Musik nevertheless
