In this stream we discuss the essential functions you need to make any style of music.

Here is a short list of essentials (in my opinion):

1. Sampler (Digitakt)

2. Polysynth (OP-1)

3. Monosynth (Syntakt)

3. MIDI Keyboard (OMX-27)

4. Something for capturing vocals (Roland VT-4)

5. A summing mixer (Octatrack)

What is your setup? Do you have these ingredients in your workflow? A computer has them all, an MPC has them all, a Dirtywave M8 has most.

This Setup Has All You Need to Make Great Music

In today's episode of Electron Talk, we take a look at the Octatrack, Digitakt, and Syntakt from both a music production and live performance perspective. Each of these three grooveboxes designed by Elektron is impressive on its own, but together, they offer unique features that complement each other's strengths and fill in the gaps where one may lack. However, they don't cover all the areas comprehensively, do they? That's where instruments like a vocal processor and a convenient polysynth come into the mix. Today, we will create techno from scratch, discuss sound design, and share our favorite gear for music production. Currently running: 1:Octatrack, performance mixer/looping/resample 2:Polyend tracker, on drum duty+some background/sequencing external/main machine (inputs ab into OT) 3:novation bs2 sequenced by PT paraphonic mode mono or dual mono into OT (or better yet free up another input on OT and go into the line in on the PT). 4:if an input is free on the OT I will usually throw in another mono (something good for industrial/Idm) at the moment its behringer edge. This setup is cool because it allows me to circumvent all the Polyend trackers shortcomings, and while playing live or messing around i can take parts in and out manually as id like on the PT then capture the loop on the OT then move into another configuration seemlessly. The addition of the OT allows me to also capture those jams as two seperate tracks (drums/melodics) for later recording. Even crazier is just the ability to use the PT/OT combo to endlessly create loops and generate patterns all while quickly swapping out sounds. OT is still kinda under utilised in its full usage in my setup so looking to try to get better at working within the OT itself so i can come up with a true hybridized jam/creation setup.

I think the OT as a performance mixer plus the ST and the DT is a powerful combo. I kinda ditched the DTone for streamlining reasons, even though it’s a an amazing piece of gear. I don’t use midi keyboards as I’m not a keyboardist but I may throw in a guitar (ideally in the input of the OT to take advantage of the pickup machines, but that implies some cable manipulation - why oh why hasn’t the OT got more inputs ?!) and some vocals through the TC Helicon vocal performer.

Hi Matt - just watched Tuesday Mar 5 LiveStream (a little late)... what was the white chassis keyboard in the background behind you?

That is the OMX-27!

Delos Prismatic

DigitoneKeys/Digitakt running into the Octatrack Performance Mixer. Nord Lead A1 running into DNKeys. DT Midi tracks controlling reverb/delay/extra lfo for DNKeys. DNKeys control knobs set up to control parameters on DT. Octatrack stereo out into an MPC live for master compression/distortion/EQ/fx. Here's the first EP I put out. I recorded these tracks straight off my master outs. EP was mastered by my friend. https://open.spotify.com/album/0omqKKhrHeisu9i2L06gA0?referral=labelaffiliate&utm_source=1101lyjCyZ8Z&utm_medium=Indie_Distrokid&utm_campaign=labelaffiliate

I love your gear choices.

I need to explore the iPad music production software, it seems very deep.

It is definitely my favorite combo right now. I think the TC is a great sounding voice processor.
