Barry Harris is one of my absolute favourite musical educators, and I must've watched all of the available videos of him teaching these classes hundreds of times whilst frantically scribbling notes out and trying to keep up with his process.

I love this video, from start to finish it is a "must watch" in my opinion. The way he gets them all playing a jazz blues at the end is fascinating to see too.. his demand that they pick things out by ear and think in intervalic terms is a powerful point.

Let me know down in the comments if you watched the whole thing! ;)

Feeling the "and"

This video is part of a collection of videos which Frans Elsen recorded during workshops that Barry Harris gave at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague between 1989 and 1998. Frans Elsen was a very important Dutch pianist, arranger and educator of Jazz. He and Barry shared a mutual appreciation of each others music and were close friends. This material has been edited and selected by Frans himself. It gives a unique insight in Barry's wonderful ways of teaching and his extraordinary musicianship. Please visit http://www.franselsen.com for info about Frans Elsen and his musical legacy. There is a special reference to these videos on that website. These videos are an important historical document of one of Jazz music's finest and foremost musicians and educators.

Wow! I've seen a couple of his videos before, but Ho Lee F**k, that's amazing! My newest "rabbit hole".

Okay just turned this on and he is going off on how hard bop is the dark ages of Jazz. And he is right. Incredible. I love hard bop but I also 100% agree with what he is saying. Thanks for sharing, Alex

Of course I did watch till the end ! The rhythm exercise at the end is killing me ! The smartest cat for sure.

Watched the whole thing. Good stuff.

I’ve been intrigued by Barry Harris for a while now, mainly watching video’s of other people explaining. Maybe I should be watching more of the ‘real stuff. Don’t really know where to start and how to fit it in yet. This one was a really great rhythm lesson indeed! PS: I watch your lessons the same way as you watch BH!

Eric Mintz

Great stuff. As cool a cat as there ever was.

I don't think I'll ever play that Philly Joe thing on the four again--not just out of deference, but also because of the powerful salsa/rhumba dancehall logic of the "and." Really good and true.

Hmm a little too scholarly for what I need, but watched it to the end! He sure is schooling them in real world musicianship and what an amazing teacher to have at that time in your musical journey it would have been a blast.

BTW I went and listened to the 4 classic Miles Quintet discs all with “Philly” Joe Jones (Cookin’ Relaxin’ Workin’ and Steamin’ not sure it gets more swinging than that-go “Philly” (felt I had to throw some love his way 😎)

Thanks Gert! Yeah, there's no right or wrong place to jump in on the Barry Harris train, just watch a bunch of those videos and pick things out that you dig the sound of. His blues lessons are always great and fairly easy to understand.

Incredible teacher and player!.. lived with Coleman Hawkins for years, played with the legends and offers first hand, grass roots guidance with very little waffle. He's the antithesis of the Berklee/theory heavy/modal filler approach to teaching jazz and I love that. In one word; Proper.

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha yeah for sure, he's a legend of the jazz drumming world and for good reason and swings well no doubt. One of my top 10 jazz drummers.. Sonny Payne being my #1 ;)

Lots going on here. One of several point is 'sing the melody' regardless of what part/instrument you play. Every instructor I have had says same thing, you have to know the melody, period, start there.

Alex Farran Guitar

Sage advice for sure.. if you can get your ear trained to the point where you can really hear and internalise the intervals, your soloing takes on a much more melodic quality 👌🏻

Dana

Watched to the end. They had to think fast - I would have been stressed for sure.

Adam Cherry

wow, the guy knows what he's hearing and knows what he wants!!

Great stuff!
