A twangy, raunchy country blues lead study based on the classic "Jolene" by Dolly Parton. We use the song's original melody as a launch pad for soloing ideas. These approaches are of course universally applicable and will give your improvisations some real structure and pop sensibility, making your solos increasingly more effective and memorable.

A lesson choc-full of fun little tricks and tips based on triads and pentatonic scales!

Later into the video I also introduce my latest acquisition; a rather lovely Fender Custom Shop 56' Strat, so do stick around for that ;)

(Lesson materials will also include my backing track)

Congrats on the new Strat Alex! I took my kids to Dollywood last year. I was cranking Jolene as we entered the parking lot and asked if that qualified us for a discount. They just laughed and took my credit card 💳

Steve Mayle

Nice one, almost got me line dancing there :)

Brad Wendler

I saw Pat Metheny last night in Morristown, NJ. He ended the show with another great country song "Wichita Lineman" played on an acoustic baritone guitar. Not something you'd expect to hear at a Pat Metheny concert, much less the final encore. Same

Brad Wendler

Whoops, hit send... anyway. Same method of never losing the melody whether playing it straight or voice leading through the chord changes. It was haunting on that baritone. I believe he said he tunes the D and G strings up an octave, and discussed having to find a string company that made strings that wouldn't break.

Random gear question. Does the soft V neck seem to make wrapping the thumb around easier? (For you of course, everyone’s hand are built differently)

Alex Farran Guitar

It actually does! To be honest, I’m always comfortable wrapping my thumb round as I’ve done it for so long, but yeah the soft V makes it even more comfortable for sure! 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

That’s super cool Brad! The strength of the music is always in the melody for sure, and often the simpler the better. 👌🏻

Johan

Thanks for the input. That Nachocaster is very tastefully reliced. You make it sound great too.

Joseph Corso

Me and My wife couldn't agree more with you Alex, Awful version is right sweeping right up the charts! This lesson is just another masterpiece in teaching playing and tone...thanks my Sunday night AF lessons are so inspiring....

Alex Farran Guitar

Ah thanks buddy, glad we feel the same about that! ;) Really glad you're finding the lessons inspiring :)

Ron Bogdanoff

I can use some of these ideas for surf too!! Seems country and surf are almost the same thing.

Alex Farran Guitar

You’re so right Ron!.. just crank that reverb to 10 and you’re sorted! 🏄‍♂️🌊

Brendan Tindall

This is too good, reminds me of the scene in once upon a time in Mexico, the puerco pibil was too good and Johnny Depp went and shot the chef 😂

Brendan Tindall

Not a chance, learning too much, love your set as well, don’t know if it’s your lounge room, but it feels like having a jam with a mate

Alex Farran Guitar

Ah thanks buddy, I’m glad it comes across that way! That’s my home studio/office upstairs, and I wanted it to feel inviting/welcoming so I’m glad to hear it comes across that way! 🙏🏻🍻

Another great country/Americana lesson, Alex. Keep the lessons coming! Your blues/soul inspired lessons are favorites of mine as well. I’d love to dive into more 60’s and 70’s soul whenever you have an opportunity to add a lesson in those genres. But every single lesson you provide is fantastic!

Emily Froberg

Any chance you would do a rhythm lesson for this tune?

Alex Farran Guitar

It’s a possibility Emily.. maybe just as a short Patreon exclusive lesson. I’ll put it on the list 👍🏻

Patrick

Very late to this but loving it. Licks for days, although I can't play it nearly up to speed yet. That "bar the root and fifth and slide up to the fifth on the G string" move is going to be the death of me.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Patrick, glad you dig it! Ah yes, a tricky move at first but like anything, once it's in the muscle memory you'll find yourself over-using it if anything! haha

Benoit Touche

Yes please, a rythm lesson would be just great

Sammy Banawan

Gotta learn this one in honor of Saint Dolly
