Matt Munisteri is one of my absolute favourite current Jazz/Roots musicians, he has it all from incredible guitar chops and genius chord work, to fantastic singing and arranging skills. He's also a true historian of this music and a genuine carrier of the torch, especially when it comes to pre-war jazz and swing. He's also a real raconteur and a great laugh. I'm lucky to have spent a fair bit of quality time with him and it's like meeting an older Brother you've not seen in years. An incredibly gifted and warm man.This album is an ode to the songs of a great, and often forgotten composer named Willard Robison. Matt brings them to life with his arrangements and the stellar musicianship of his band.

Check out the solo at 2:25 into the tune above.. that swing feel!.. that pocket!.. those lines.. liquid gold 👌🏻

Give the whole record a listen, but I'll include a couple of my favourites below;

"Truthful Parson Brown" (killer blues piece);https://youtu.be/Db2Otl51Up4?si=oUqqmHwvZ_gM3ZNj

"Little High Chair-man" (beautifully sweet ballad with crazy chord moves and heart-warmingly beautiful lyrics);

"Taint' so" (dramatic and clever);

"Cottage For Sale" (if Ray Charles played guitar.. wicked tone on this Blues ballad);

I'd highly recommend searching Matt out on YouTube, it's a rabbit hole you won't be sorry you went down!

Thanks Alex! I really enjoy these album of the week recommendations. When they come in, I make it a point to play the albums here at work. I appreciate the exposure to so much incredible music! It's also making me think more about what I'm doing on the guitar instead of just falling into my comfort zone. 🙏🏻

Ow sounds really good. I wouldn’t mind being thought one of his fingerstyle swing arrangements at all 😉.

Love Matt. Great teacher, too. Check out his duets with Jonathan Stout on the porch at Centrum (YT). Doesn’t get any better than this.

Yeah man, amazing stuff! I love his playing with Whit Smith too.. super cool. Saw him in London last year playing with Catherine Russell band.. stellar performance!

Tim Kremer

Matt is fantastic! I also really like his playing (and singing) in Brock Mumford, The Earregulars, Musette Explosion and Aaron Weinstein (3x3).

This is a really great share, Alex. Listened to the record this morning and really enjoyed it. Reminded me to dig out some other very rootsy gems like Kelly Joe's Lead Me On and Chris Whitely's Dirt Floor. Yeah... excellent share today - thank you.

Thanks I’ve followed Matt’s music and lessons over the years and I agree he is passionate about preserving and sharing his love of that pre-war music, guitar, history and the characters, oh and it helps that he is a gentleman that also has killer chops!

Henrik Hermann

Talking about Whit Smith… How about a lesson on a standard (e.g Exactly like You) western swing / Hot Club of Cowtown style?

Cliff Roberts

YES, I agree most full heartedly!!! Here's another guy I can very warmly suggest listening to, a true Master in every sense of the word! Jonathan Stout (and his Campus Five).

Merci Alex de nous faire découvrir des petites petites ! J’adore ce style ! Il y a des choses dedans qui me font penser à accords de Randy Newman 😉

Alex Farran Guitar

Glad you enjoyed it Antoine and yes definitely some Randy Newman similarities.. I agree!
