Something a little different this week. I breakdown and teach a solo I composed as part of some session work I did a while back. I think it makes for a good example of how to craft melodic and tasteful ideas out of just a handful of simple ingredients.

This was a singer-songwriter, Americana, Country-pop type of vibe and needed something minimal but emotive for the solo. As always, I like to provide the producer with a few alternate options.. we go through a couple of those in this lesson too.

So get that tele dialled in with a lovely clean tone.. chuck some reverb and trem at it and join me for a lesson in turning the basics into something immediately musical!

And as always, stick around til the end for gear talk and practice tips! 😉

Tyrone Miller

The Americana feels are great works Love getting a hold of that stlye!

Alex Farran Guitar

For anyone who downloaded the zip file already, I've just updated it as there was an error in bar 26 of the transcription. Thanks to Steve Fury for pointing it out to me! 🙏🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Neal, glad you liked it! Sure thing, I just filmed a new Tom Waits video yesterday in fact and will be covering more simple standards very soon too!

Craig

All these Americana lessons are fantastic. Your use of triads to develop melodic phrases and solos is superb, and it’s really helping me delve into this style of playing. Thanks for all the great content!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Craig, really glad you’re enjoying the lessons. In my opinion, this is the perfect sort of music to practice applying triad and arpeggio “follow the changes” based playing 👍🏻

Ty Miller

Love the Americana it really grabs my attention' Great Stuff🤗🤗🤗

Wayne America

Hey Alex, Thanks for your solid advice on using a looper for practice. The Fender Mustang GTX amp that I just bought has looper functionality on its companion pedal. I tried it out for the first time tonight by recording the simple 1,2-,4,5,1 progression that you included in your lesson materials, then playing along on Find my way session work.

Chip

Love that cascading pedal steel run ! ❤️

Brendan Tindall

Hey Alex, I've never much played electric, just wondered if I entered into telecaster world, would you have any recommendation for a tele that's kinda budget level

Carlos Funk

I'm going to work on the "key elements".....thanks for including that!

Alex Farran Guitar

Glad you liked it Kyle! I'm a huge fan of those pedal steel sounds 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Hey Brendan, hmmm, nowadays there's so many good options out there. I've always been really impressed with the Squier Classic Vibe telecasters, and the Mexican made Vintera models too. Well worth checking out 👍🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Wayne, glad to hear you're working on this stuff with a looper! Honestly the best practice tool out there in my opinion!

Alexander Eichmann

Thanks for mapping out the key elements separately. Really helps to understand the solo and underline the chord changes and it's also a good practice!

Alex Farran Guitar

I’m really glad you found the key elements useful. That’s what it’s all about really isn’t it? 🙏🏻

Guy Roberts

Alex, one more time, Love the lessons but winzip sucks bigtime! Itried to unload this lesson but can't get it to open. Can you send me the notation and tabs? Cheers

Alex Farran Guitar

No worries Guy, I'll attach the files separately to the post above incase anyone else has an issue with zip files too.

Andre Hessels

Thanks. Sorry, no backing track for this one?

Matthew Casey

that part 2 entry is magic, going to steal that and get it deep in my bones

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Andre, I'll try to get that sorted and will add it to the post above. Watch this space!

RICHARD CHEN

Hello. I’m new to this but love your work. How do I open a gpx or gp file? Also, is there just an instrumental file to practice with? Thanks!

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Richard, thanks for being here mate! So the gp and gpx are Guitar Pro files that require the Guitar Pro software to open. It’s so worth getting that software, honestly, it’s essentially interactive sheet music that you can play through and hear, as well as slow down, loop, edit etc. PDF is also cool of course but lack the playback features etc. As for a backing track.. most my lessons have one, but I wasn’t sure legally about this one as it was session work I did for a producer last year and they now have the rights to the song. I’ve emailed the producer about it and am still waiting on a response. If he gives me the go ahead, I’ll upload the backing track under the post above 👍🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Thought you'd like to know that I've just uploaded the backing track :)

Hey guys, thought you'd like to know that I've just uploaded the backing track :)

Paul Hodgson

This is a real treasure trove. The video of this showed up on my YouTube and I thought it would be cool if there was a lesson and lo and behold! Great work as always.
