Fancy a technical challenge?.. have a crack at this fantastic traditional gypsy waltz. I've attached my sheet music below for both the melody and the chords. Both are well worth having a go at and should present a few fun little things tackle!

I do intend on doing a thorough lesson on this piece in the not too distant future, but in the meantime, have a go at it and let me know how you get along!

Also, don't be put off trying the gypsy stuff just because you don't have a "gypsy guitar".. it really doesn't matter.. as you can see/hear in this video, the Martin does a good job of it. The tone is in the picking technique, not the gear!

Thanks for your support guys, you're the best 🙏🏻🧡

“Indifference” v2 - Gypsy jazz waltz on Martin D28!

Transcription available at the link below! (all chord work and lead work included!).. https://smogfalls.gumroad.com/l/unjam Another tune I wanted to re-record since getting the new camera!.. this time I've gone for an entirely different arrangement of it compared to last time. This is a strictly acoustic, more traditional take on the melody.. and it's a real nice challenge to work up your picking technique! I somehow managed to record this in just 1 take for both the chord work, and the lead part!.. pretty chuffed with that! And of course, it’s a really great test of your internal “metronome” to see if you can keep a steady tempo from start to finish when laying down the chords unaccompanied.. something that I constantly recommend my students take upon themselves to do. Currently without a "gypsy jazz" Selmer/Maccaferri type of guitar.. but I've owned many in the past and to be honest, the gypsy sound and feel is much more about technique.. especially with the pick, than it is about the gear.. as always! I think the Martin HD28v does an admirable job anyway. Gear used.. F@cking sweet, Alex. Can’t wait to take a crack at this !!

Gert De Groof

Great timing, I was just going through your lessons thinking which one to revise…this will do just fine 😀…sounds great! Oh and thanks for reminding me I don’t need a Selmer…don’t have a dreadnought either though 😂.

Jon Parker

Love it . Interesting hearing it played on the Martin. More Djangle than Django but non the worse for that !

Nat

Oh my! This is just brilliant! Can't wait to get cracking on this!

Gert De Groof

Analyzing question: as the piece is in Em (at least that made sense to me analyzing section A and B) should I analyse section C rather as in the relative major key of G?

GoofyRaf

What ???? I was about to ask you if I could dream to have it one day, as a Patreon !!!! I love this tune, seen yours in YouTube, discovering you and your channel. The version I was introduced to the tune is the Bernard Lubat one ! I thought it was his own composition for a long time. I had great dancing memories with the song, happily before everybody can film you with smartphone… Thanks a lot Alex, I mean it. (As I’m here, my second daydream about tabs is your arrangement of Good bye pork pie hat… do you think it could come true ? 😉)

GoofyRaf

A great present for sure (maybe a poisoned one if I consider the tons of work I need, and all the steps I still have to climb…) I know, no rushing, I have time. Thanks again 🙏

Brad Wendler

Not sure if it's a problem on my end but I can download and print the "traditional arrangement" but with the "fancy chords" I get error code 0x80070057 . A system scan did not fix the parameters of the file.

William Dawson

Brilliance! Always wanted a Selmer... I do have a d28. ... Great playing thanks Alex

Johan

This is brilliant!

Alex Farran Guitar

Oh dear, sorry to hear that Brad, I'll add the files individually under the post above. Let me know if that doesn't work out

Wayne America

This sounds lovely. I want to work on playing through the chords. I see how valuable they are to aid improvising. The lead that you played is way beyond my ability at present. To be honest, I am totally getting into Freddie King lately.

Tyrone Miller

Excellent chord arrangement That's the 1st thing I'm gonna do 1st Thanks for another good one👍👍👍

tyler taube

Very nice. I enjoyed that.

Gert De Groof

I think we’re going to need a camera angle on your picking hand for the lead part 🤯

Alex Farran Guitar

The picking is certainly a learning curve with this style! When I do film a full lesson for it, I will endeavour to get a 2nd camera angle involved somehow ;)

Alex Farran Guitar

My pleasure! The chords are a good challenge in themselves for sure!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Wayne, glad you like it! The chords are certainly a good workout in themselves! Ooh, I love Freddie King.. that live version of "Woman Across The River" is a long time favourite of mine!

Carl McAndrew

Would love to get your views on plectrums Alex. I know you go for a pretty thick pick for Django stuff, and I have seen you using Honey picks- but judging from the different colours I assume you are changing thickness ( and dimensions?) for different tasks/ musical styles. It might be a short and dry topic, but I find myself every so often having a crisis of plectrum doubt. Would love to know what your pick preferences are. Cheers

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha plectrum crisis!.. I've been there many times! Nowadays I keep it very simple and just grab whatever happens to be near. Usually a Dunlop H3 for teles, Strats and the 335. And a thicker 2.5 - 3mm pick for pretty much everything else. I like the Dunlop Prime picks as well as the Honeypicks.

GoofyRaf

I’m happy, I almost broke the whole song ! Well, the problem is the speed… I’m not even playing it half speed 😂 bloody gipsy 😉 I’m having great time though 🙏

Alex Farran Guitar

That’s great news mate! No worries about the speed.. a tune as strong as this sounds beautiful at any tempo! 👌🏻

Jerome Oks

Nice sounding chord shapes! The rhythm guitar track could be a tune with nothing else on top.

Jerome Oks

Put aside the speed, I don’t find the lead complicated. I have been listening to that style of music since I was a kid. By the same token, I have been getting into country music only pretty recently after discovering Duke Levine. I didn’t have “an ear” for that kind of music and playing a country lead was a challenge. Saw Duke Levine live 2 weeks ago. He was playing with Club D’Elf, a cool world music band, that is an institution in Cambridge (MA).

Jerome Oks

Listening to a Waltz called "Passion" from Romane's Impairs et Valses, sounds like a variation on "Indifference", sure enough the songwriter is Tony Murena as well.
